Apple’s 1997 Thoughts
The Apple Workgroup Server 9650/350 was based on the Kansas architecture. It features a 350 MHz PowerPC 604e processor, 64 MB of RAM, a 4.0 GB hard drive, an internal Zip drive, and an 8 MB IX-Micro Twin Turbo 128 video card in a well-designed, easy-to-upgrade tower case. Tiki notes: I have read that this shipped with a SCSI PCI card for additional Ultra/Wide SCSI-3 port, but mine did not come with one. Also for a few extra $ you could add a 10/100 Ethernet Adapter to the configuration. The default is the Built-in 10Mbps.

The original Apple Technical Specifications can be found here.

Tiki’s Technical Specifications - Phase 2

Workgroup Server 9650/G4 450
s/n XB735027APY - Birthday: 8/26/97

XLR8 Mach Carrier 450MHz G4 (w/ MACh Speed Control)

8 128MB matched pair DIMMs = 1024MGs
(168-pin, 5v EDO 64-bit, 4K refresh - 2K per side, 60ns) - ACME RAM via MacGurus.

Tiki notes: Replaced the 500MHz G3 with the new G4 this Summer! Side by side image.

4 RAM slots left! The “Kansas” logic board shipped with the MACH 5 604E 350MHz,
but is similar to the “Tsunami” logic board.

OS 9.2.2 - Thanks to Other World Computing - OS9 Helper.

Seagate Hard Drives

Boot Drive = Seagate Cheetah ST318406LW
Data Drive = Seagate Cheetah ST336607LW
(Intech 3.5)

Tiki notes: Well, a MOD was needed in this area. Seagate HDs spinning at 10k or 15k generate heat. So, I started buying these “Ultimate 5.25-in Hard Drive Coolers w/ Dual 40mm fans” from MacGurus. A wonderful heat sink, outstanding MOD options, but the fans were of poor quality (maybe a year at best before they failed). A quick bounce to Cyberguys and you will find Magnetic Levitation Sunon fans! Brand spankin’ new Ultra 320 Internal Cable (I wish I could afford Granite Teflone, but Amphenol is swell) to hook up the Miles U2W Ultra2 SCSI Card to my Sreaming Cheetahs.

PCI Slots

A1 - initio Miles U2W Ultra2 SCSI Card (my Cheetahs)
A2 - initio Miles Bluenote SCSI Card (Ext. SCSI imation CD burner)
A3 - Asante Fast 690 10/100 (CAT5E - HP PROCURVE SWITCH)
A4 - PCI turbo exhaust fan
F1 - ATI Radeon 7000 32MB Video Card
F2 - Aurora Igniter Video Capture Card

Tiki notes: After a strange conflict, I switched the Radeon’s pci slot position (f1 to f2) with the Igniter card. Not sure if this did anything, as I have not pushed the conflict a second time. Bottom line… This puppy rocks! Phase 3 (OS X 10.2 Jaguar, FireWire internal CD/DVD burner) will start in a few months.
