Cool Links

If you are looking for my collection of Macintosh links, please visit the Graphic Penguin links page.

A few months ago a site that I put a few years of my life into, went down. It was a music site and with a little help from others, I collected a nice collection of links to radio stations and other music sites. I learned a bit from the experience, more or less—I have no plans on working on another general music site. Then again, if some big Rock n Roll group or Record Company would like to pay me—When do I start ?

So where to put this collection of fine links ? And what of the other links I have found; the weird, the bizarre, the crazy but great—that would make my team roll their eyes if I placed them on the Graphic Penguin links page ?

So here is my non-www.graphicpenguin.com link collection. I have decided that what made the radio station links very kewl was the descriptions by the folks who gave the URLs submissions. So I am going to put the links on this page just like the old YellowRoom radio page (OK, the background is blue - get over it). One last thought—this stuff has sat on a jaz cart for a while, if you find a dead link, format change, you want to add a site and give a hoot, send me an e. Hey—I found a little free time and decided to work on this site, next week, the next year—who knows.

For now, I give you the links from the YellowRoom radio page. More links to follow.

AAA is back in Southern California !

The Channel 103.1 FM

OK, This speil was not on the original YellowRoom page, But I put up this link.
The station at times sucks... It will never be a close second to KSCA—but what the hell, they are trying.
Note: It looks like the station is about to become history... I hear that around July the station will change it’s format.

Santa Monica, CA - KACD • Newport Beach, CA - KBCD

Bobby Ocean Sends us :

Here’s a station that should be on your list.

It’s a commercial station (not a college station) so it’s particularly refreshing to hear.
A station that calls itself "Independent Rock," lives up to it’s name and is supported by the community.

    The station is Bellingham, Washington’s KISM 92.9 FM;
Program Director is Ken Richards. Hope you get a chance to hear it.

Judi sends us these AAA Station Links :

WCLZ - Portland, Maine 98.9 FM
WHPT - Tampa, FL 102.5 FM

    WERU - 89.9 FM
This is a non-commercial, volunteer powered, grassroots radio station
    broadcasting from Blue Hill, Maine

More stations with the AAA format in the New England area:

    WERI-FM - Block Island R.I 99.3 FM

    WMVY - Tisbury (Martha’s Vineyard, Mass) 92.7
plays album-oriented rock (AAA) You can hear local news and weather as well as
entertainment, concert reports and steamship sailing updates along with great music.

    WKZE-FM - Salisbury (NW CT, Salisbury/Sharon area) 98.1

Top college radio stations all across the country are listed here:
    http://www.taponline.com/TAP/music/college/radio.html

My vote for interesting College radio in Maine goes to WBOR - (Bowdoin on Radio)
91.1 FM Bowdoin College. Totally free form radio, anything goes!

WMPG - Univ. Southern Maine, Portland 90.9 FM
They are less than a mile from my house, at the college I graduated from.

Also a link to NPR would be a good addition. Where else can you hear car talk?

Suggestions for good radio on the Internet:

WFMU - New York City - 91.1 FM
WXYC - Chapel Hill, North Carolina - 89.3 FM
WCBN - Ann Arbor, Michigan - 88.3 FM

All 3 of these stations webcast in real audio. They are the only 3 freeform radio stations which do so to my knowledge.
There are only a handful of such stations in the U.S. anyway. These are spectacularly great radio stations — a continual
    surprise, education and treat.

There are other good stations on the web. Try commercial station KGSR 107.1 FM from Austin for "adult alternative" with a Texas spin — that is they include some of the great Texas musicians like Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, etc...

Finally KJHK in Lawrence, Kansas is a fine college radio station with an emphasis on independent rock.

And there are others. Audio fidelity is low. But the music comes through.

While growing up in Chicago, when I was first getting good quality radio, there was a show called Triad,
which aired 5 hours each weeknight. This show introduced the Chicago area to a lot of great bands that did
not get airplay anywhere else back in the early and mid '70’s. The person who did the show has
dedicated a web site to his old show.

The web site is at : Triad Check it out!

KPIG is a unique roots-oriented freeform station in Freedom CA (Monterey/Salinas/Santa Cruz area).
It's quite into humor too -- just consider its dial position, which is "107 oink 5"! :-)

KOTR is another freeform station even closer to L A (94.9 in Cambria, just up the 1 from San Luis Obispo).
At this one there’s quite a bit of difference between one DJ’s music mix and the next. Lady Tie Di 6..10am PT
is mellower, Drew Ross 10..2 is heavier, Dean Kattari 2..6 is more varied, and Harry N Farmer (Mon..Wed only)
6..10 pm focuses on acoustic signer/songwriters. The rest of the schedule is once-a-week DJs.

"True To The Music" WRSI "The River" is a wonderful acoustic-leaning and deeper-than-average AAA station
based in Greenfield MA with coverage (through two frequencies) of north central MA and southeast VT
(and everywhere via the web, of course).

UncleJoeM Sends us :

KFOG - San Francisco, CA 104.5 / San Jose, CA 97.7
KKZN (The Zone) - Dallas 93.3 (This station also broadcasts LIVE on the Web)

Another Community Radio Station:

KSPC - Pomona College, CA. 88.7
You never know what this fine station will serve up. Free form at its finest.

KFLX The Eagle in Flagstaff, Az and is on realaudio. Check it out! Seeya, Chris
    105.1 - Flagstaff / Sedona • 97.1 Prescott / Chino

Scott Sends us :

I’d like to see JJJ added.

It’s pretty unique - paid for by the Australian Government run broadcaster called the ABC.
The J’s are a national network covering each state capital and major cities.
It’s aimed at Gen-X, so the play list is pretty eclectic.

    KCRW-FM - Santa Monica College, CA 89.9

An eclectic mix, a bit heavy on the talk during the day light hours.
"Morning Becomes Eclectic" M-F, 9 am - 12 noon is recommended. A nice collection of their past "Live In Performance" shows are archived and available on their web site.
