Fall has not arrived yet. It is still hot, humid and wet here. Arg…

Bees and Basil

I continue to work on our greens garden. The first batch of collards and mustard greens are now in the ground. I also put in radishes, onions and garlic sets. The lettuce plants, I planted a few weeks ago in the raised beds, have really taken off. About the only seedlings that seem to be staring off into space is the spinach. Not sure if it is because of the late heat, but they are not doing much of anything. I might want to start over and use a different variety. The last time I planted spinach, I cheated ;) and used those packs of the already growing variety.

I still have room to put in quite a few more rows but I might have to work around our giant basil plant. Still going strong and it still brings the bees and other beneficial insects to our little patch. So I will let it continue to do it’s thing until the cold sets in. I was able to get three small seedlings in small pots for the winter. It looks like my hard work the last two years on the soil has paid off. I was really pleased with yesterday’s soil test results. When I first started this patch, it was a bit acidic to say the least.

Mr. Bunny bouncing in our yard a few weeks ago. Thank goodness for the fence. Not that it will stop the local deer, but it keeps this guy and his friends out.

Swamp Daisies

October 3rd, 2009

Hello, this is my first post!

I am going to write about the various flowers in our yard. Swamp daisies are quite impressive. The flowers are coming up all over the farm as they are a local wild flower and have just started to bloom. We transplanted these last year when they were about 6 inches high. As you can see they have grown and spread quickly. The bees love these plants. —rockhopper
