Tiki: Wed May 3, 06 at 12:25:00 AM (EDT) - Amazing....

Well, things are a tad bit weird here

I posted this on my Sk8 forum today...

Just some random thoughts I had today... (yesterday)

Today - A very well organized Protest / Rally was held in Los Angeles.

I guess it did not change my thoughts on this issue as I do not have an open and shut opinion. I do not see how you pick up 12 million folks and move them back to where they came from. So I guess they are going to be here a while ;) I have grown up around a whole bunch of Chicanos, many of them I am proud to call my bros. Turns out that one of my hand full of tight buds, is a Mexican (w/ Green Card) blew my mind as he is as Apple Pie as any of us Heinz 47 in Pedro. I never asked. Why should I?

Anywho...

1070 AM reported that 72,000 kids did not show up to school today. The State of Cali gives the schools something like $28.00 per head, per day for each student. That adds up. The schools that teach the kids are going to do with out this week. Many kids who need to learn everything they can, to make it in this world, are now a day behind. See where I am going with this.

The ports of LA and Long Beach were shut down. The hispanic truckers did not show up to work. No skin off the ILWU, they make their scratch, no matter what. The had a strike last year (a lot longer than a day) so I guess most of the USA was not that screwed. But the truckers were not paid. I hope they saved some scratch for a rainy day. Rent was due today. Not sure who they think they hurt. Me thinks themselves.

I read the other day that most Mexican Markets were going to closed. I shop at Numero Uno (a great place I must add). But rather than waste my time going there, I went to the local shop (Blue Market on Pacific) to buy my Tecate Beer. OK, this hurt me. I spent 10.25 for a 12 pack, cost me 11.99 +CRV for a 18 pack at NU.

A lot of other Mom and Pop shops had to close today. Mexican Food Joints come to mind. I hope this day did not hurt them to much. The Green Onion across the street from me, had it's doors open, but it really is not the real deal. Places can not pay the bills and some folks will lose their jobs.

I guess I could go on and on... Like with any Strike, the peons carry the torch, and the fat cat union bosses still get paid. I hope all involved feel that it is worth it and have no problems with the sacrifices that they have made (today) for the movement. You do have to stand up and be counted. But you have to understand that in the end you may lose your job. Already the Red Brigade Folks are infiltrating the rally and spouting off nonsense. Do these folks speak for you? The chant is today we march, tomorrow we vote. OK, ummmm, I hate to tell you this, only citizens can vote, and this might cause some backlash.

Man - I hope it was worth it. But at least they stood up and spouted their views. Clap clap clap. Last time I checked, that is what Americans do.

Sounds to me like the type of folks I want to watch my back, when the shit hits the fan. Sorry for the long yada yada.. But I still judge each and everyone I meet as a person. And I am blessed that some are my friends. I could care less where they are from. Food for thought.

Now if we could only get His dad to smite those who sing it in Mexican....

When Roseanne Barr sang the Anthem in English *and* body English, it made the Baby Jesus cry with joy - or something.

Hungry ? Well, go ahead and eat a Mexican. It won't bother me at all!

The liquor store where I buy my smokes looked like it was closed yesterday (door closed, security bars across his windows). It's owned by a really nice Vietnamese inmmigrant and in a strip mall that predominatly caters to the heavily Hispanic population in my neighborhood. I pulled up, tried the door and it opened. The owner asked me "Is it still violent out there ?" I said, "No...why do you ask?" He told me that some Mexican guys came in and told him to shut down or else they would break his windows. The guy was scared to death.

I wonder how many other businesses got the same threats ?

...as there are lots of typos and words missing.

RTE: Sun Apr 30, 06 at 02:27:51 PM (EDT) - The National Anthem

Does anybody here have a problem with the illegal immigrant supporters buthering of the Star Spangled Banner ? (Obviously, the use of the word butchering shows how I feel.) Strictly from a musical/lyrical standpoint it's a piece of crap. There are certain portions of the arrangement that are a bit interesting and maybe even "nice". But the whole product overall is pretty damn wretched. To dismantle the lyrics though really pissed me off to no end. I dunno. Mabye I'm losing the last vestiges of my commie, liberal democratic leanings. Maybe I'm becoming what I railed against when I was a kid during the civil rights era. But I can't help feeling there's something inherently wrong with sneaking into the USA and then bitching about how bad they have it...how mistreated they are. Their new anthem says to me "Screw the American culture. We'll TAKE what's yours and make it ours. We have no plans to assimmilate and Americans shouldn't expect us to." The thing is, a lot of us that were part of the whole KSCA saw it coming 8 or 9 years ago. We lost OUR radio station so the new owners could exploit the Mexican Hillbilly music market. Now it's become more than just the airwaves they want. The question is: Am I a racist or just a good American that feels taken advantage of ?

Hi Tiki.... Thanks for that info... I signed the petition (was surprised to see you linking anything from MoveOn.org LOL!). I am forwarding e-mails to all I think would be interested too!

Tiki: Tue Apr 25, 06 at 10:22:25 PM (EDT) - Once again....

If these assholes have their way, your ISP’s ISP will be throttling our forums and making it so slow you won’t want to visit (and just about every other site on the net that refuses to pay their ransom).

Congress is seeking to pass a radical law that would give giant corporations more control over the Internet.

Internet backbone providers like AT&T and Verizon are lobbying Congress hard to gut Network Neutrality, the Internet’s First Amendment. Net Neutrality prevents AT&T from choosing which websites open most easily for you based on which site pays AT&T more. Amazon doesn't have to outbid Barnes & Noble for the right to work more properly on your computer.

If Net Neutrality is gutted, sites like ours would either pay protection money to dominant Internet providers or risk losing members because the site either won’t work or will load too slow. Amazon and Google either pay protection money or risk that their websites process slowly on your computer. That why these high-tech pioneers are joining the fight to protect Network Neutrality and you can do your part today.

The free and open Internet is under seige, can you sign this petition letting your member of Congress know you support preserving Network Neutrality?

Tell everybody! Protecting the free and open Internet is fundamental, it affects everything. Votes begin in a House committee next week.

We’ve all seen what happens when the Internet’s gatekeepers get too much control. Just last week, AOL blocked any email mentioning a coalition which opposes AOL’s proposed "email tax." And last year, Canada’s version of AT&T - Telus - blocked their Internet customers from visiting a website sympathetic to striking workers with whom Telus was negotiating.

Politicians don’t think we are paying attention to this issue. Many of them take campaign checks from big telecom companies and are on the verge of selling out to people like AT&T’s CEO, who openly says, "The internet can’t be free."

You can let Congress know we are paying attention. We can make sure they listen to your voices and the voices of people like Vint Cerf, a father of the Internet and Google’s "Chief Internet Evangelist," who recently wrote this to Congress in support of preserving Network Neutrality:

My fear is that, as written, this bill would do great damage to the Internet as we know it. Enshrining a rule that broadly permits network operators to discriminate in favor of certain kinds of services and to potentially interfere with others would place broadband operators in control of online activity...Telephone companies cannot tell consumers who they can call; network operators should not dictate what people can do online.

The essence of the Internet is at risk - can you sign this petition letting your member of Congress know you support preserving Network Neutrality?

Please pass the word on to everybody!!

P.S. If the US Congress abandons Network Neutrality, who will be affected?

Advocacy groups, Nonprofits, Google users, Innovators with the "next big idea", Ipod listeners, Online purchasers, Small businesses and tele-commuters... basically everyone who isn’t in control of the net.

P.P.S. This excerpt from the New Yorker really sums up this issue well.

In the first decades of the twentieth century, as a national telephone network spread across the United States, A.T. & T. adopted a policy of "tiered access" for businesses. Companies that paid an extra fee got better service: their customers' calls went through immediately, were rarely disconnected, and sounded crystal-clear. Those who didn’t pony up had a harder time making calls out, and people calling them sometimes got an "all circuits busy" response. Over time, customers gravitated toward the higher-tier companies and away from the ones that were more difficult to reach. In effect, A.T. & T.’s policy turned it into a corporate kingmaker.

If you’ve never heard about this bit of business history, there’s a good reason: it never happened. Instead, A.T. & T. had to abide by a "common carriage" rule: it provided the same quality of service to all, and could not favor one customer over another. But, while "tiered access" never influenced the spread of the telephone network, it is becoming a major issue in the evolution of the Internet.

Until recently, companies that provided Internet access followed a de-facto common-carriage rule, usually called "network neutrality," which meant that all Web sites got equal treatment. Network neutrality was considered so fundamental to the success of the Net that Michael Powell, when he was chairman of the F.C.C., described it as one of the basic rules of "Internet freedom." In the past few months, though, companies like A.T. & T. and BellSouth have been trying to scuttle it. In the future, Web sites that pay extra to providers could receive what BellSouth recently called "special treatment," and those that don't could end up in the slow lane. One day, BellSouth customers may find that, say, NBC.com loads a lot faster than YouTube.com, and that the sites BellSouth favors just seem to run more smoothly. Tiered access will turn the providers into Internet gatekeepers.

i was actually in town last week. so nice to be back in california. i guess i kinda miss that place! and the smog, traffic, gas prices, there's more to bitch about, but i'll probably come off as intolerant to change.(ie. racist?) =)

it's so cool to come back and see posts in here! i love it. sounds like we're all doing pretty good for ourselves!
buddaj: Brent has a myspace to for his music. Peaceseeker. he's a pretty popular guy on there!

akageorge: thanks heehee i think it's cause i have far too much time on my hands. that's all going to change real soon. i'm starting a new job with chili's monday. i've never worked restaurants before so this could be very interesting. i'm excited and looking forward to receiveing a paycheck again! and for some music chat: do any of you still read the worldclassrock group? nicole was speaking of 98.7 possibly going through a format change. perhaps you socal'ers will get another aaa station after all. didn't do much radio listening while i was there. i just got an xm unit and absolutely love the loft and xm cafe. finally some "new" music and not country or rap!

finally, a chance to get here. it's been a very different year. miss vickie parted ways with me about a year ago, seems my best friend (ahem) at edelbrock had more of an interest in her while i was keeping this freaking business going. oh well, egg salad only lasts for so long. my building was sold for the cool price of 1.3 million, which even if i had gotten a loan for that amount, would have been a tough pill to swallow. with that, i have been downsized in the building to just the front, at least i still have parking!!! in reading the last year of posts, seems like a lot of lemonade has had to have been made... trals and tribulations... good luck everyone.

I checked out www.ihath.com. No, I'd not heard of it before.
We're super busy as we inch closer to Newport's fest. We had our cast/crew/distinguished guests preview and unveling on Sunday. 211 showed up, and we were STILL missing 17 cast/crew! The film was well received, and the reviews have been pouring in since. We're being covered by the news (they'll drop a short piece just before Newport) as well as the press (same there). We're making waves.

Hi, Steph. Checked you out at myspace but it's gonna take some time to peruse all that info! Glad you're having a good life. You're too cool.

Tea: Wow. I had no idea what you've been up toy. Very nifty. I will watch for you at Sundance!!! Are you familiar with ihath's blog (www.ihath.com)? Some of your description reminds me a little of her background and story. I think we as Americans think there is a big dividing line with fences and dogs between the Palestinian world and the Israeli world, the Arab and the Western, Us and Them. Ihath and some other bloggers have shown me that it's much more grey (and red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet) than black and white.

i am so excited for you. i'm looking forward to checking out the website and the film. best of luck to you!

hi akageorge.

and now a mini story...my husband was going through some cd's the other day and happened upon an old ksca cd. he asked me how i knew about that station? i laughed and proceeded to give him an earful about my love of ksca and being exposed to some amazing music. eventually, this station led me to some of the greatest people i've ever met...some of which are still close friends today and some precious friends who i've lost touch with. it just reminded me of the wonderful people that are still here today. i'm bummed that this group isn't what it once was, but understand how we all have so many more exciting things taking place away from the computer! i think they call it LIFE! =)
I hope you all are doing well, wherever you are and thank you for being "here".

tea (aka Mrs. Dr.): Sun Mar 26, 06 at 10:44:24 PM (EST) - Newport Beach Film Festival

2 years ago I "retired" from my accounting job to pursue my lifelong goal of filmmaking.

I have spent the past 16 months producing a featurette (30 minutes long - The Unbroken Circle) which is a fictional look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a humanistic twist. It was shot on a micro-budget (under $30k) at the closed Tustin Marine base and Camp Pendleton (mostly Tustin). It's tri-lingual (Arabic/Hebrew/English) with English subtitles, cast with native-language speakers.

Newport Beach Film Festival has chosen our film to be an Official Selection this year, and we will have our world premiere with them on April 23rd at 11:30 am (a Sunday matinee) at the Edwards Island Cinemas (in the Newport Fashion Island) - Cox Theater.

For those who follow films, the film Crash (which just won the Oscar for Best Film) had their North American premiere at Newport last year. In addition, numerous short films have been purchased there for development into features over the 7 years of this festivals history.

I am extremely proud of this project, especially due to the hard work (gratis at that!) that my partner (business) and I put into making this dream a reality.

Please come out on the 23rd and support me and other independent filmmakers whose work will be shown that day in a line-up of short films and featurettes.

You can visit our website (which my love, Dr. Larry, painstakingly keeps active for us, and is a constant work in progress) www.UnbrokenCircle2005.com

For those in Northern California, Santa Cruz Film Festival has chosen us as well, and we are anxiously waiting for the nod of approval from numerous others, both stateside and abroad.

See you at the movies!

I used to enjoy hearing Mike & Mike 6 - 10 am on KSPN (they were tape delayed). Now they're on live 3 am - 6 am .... Then at first I didn't like Colin Cowherd when he replaced them 6-10am -- (PS It's the "Herd"), now I'm a little more used to him but he still totally disses baseball, he's too much of a football homer, NEVER NEVER talks about hockey, not that I care that much myself heh heh. I liked Dibs , he's migrated to satellite XM I believe on their baseball channel. I kind of agree with you Tiki that station is going in the wrong direction. Can't stand the Big Show esp John Ireland, those other buffoons between Dan Patrick and 'The little Show' I never listen to.

Yeh the "P" is interesting but I can only take him in small doses. I guess in San Pedro, 1540, that's 1540 The Ticket's signal is decent (how's reception at night??) but in OC it stinks!! At night it's virtually unlistenable. I like Rory Markus, Angels radio play by play man being the Trojans' PbP basketball announcer.

Yeh the demos we are in is not the most attractive to advertisers (fools!).

Back to ESPN Radio 710 KSPN .. they still have the Angels games for the 2006 and 2007 seasons, but watch out!! They may move to a new station after that, but no matter what station they'll be on, the signal probably won't reach anywhere near Mississippi (heh heh).

Tiki: Mon Jan 30, 06 at 11:39:20 PM (EST) - The Death of LA Sports Radio

On the national level... The day they fired / let go Ron D, I tuned off. IMHO / 2 cents Dibs waz the best... Sorry Dan P, your show went to major crap.

Local:

Have listened to the big nasty for years (Joe McDonnell) KMPC years with Top Cat (Sucked) and then the hook up with Dougie K. (Brilliant), Still have my KMPC club card. Years later Joe and Doug reunite. I have no clue why they first fired Doug, later fired Joe. But I know one thing. I re programed my car's preset to never again listen to that sorry ass station.

So, from time to time I listen to the P on the Ticket. 1640... The P is a bit strange, but a durn awful good SC station. The Heard is A-OK as well... Amazing that these jerks want the 22 to 34 demies... Idiots... Us 45 year olds have a lot more buying power. Sorry, I will no longer hear your advertisements.

Have you talked with your cousin David lately?? Here's an excerpt from Joe McDonnell's blog (McDonnell former KSPN air talent now with KLAC 570 and KTLK 1150):

"A Joe McDonnell Online spy reports that not all is peaches and cream among the members of the so-called "big show" on kspn. When Frank McCourt was making his propaganda rounds on the radio last week, AM 570 had him on the air first. When "big show" co-host John Ireland found out that McCourt - in one of his few good decisions - chose to go on 570 first instead of kspn, Ireland reportedly went bonkers. He was seen by many people screaming at erstwhile producer David Singer "Why the F*** do they (570) always have people on before we do? What the F*** do we pay you for?" Singer - a truly good guy - was reportedly stunned and hurt by Ireland's rampage, and exited rather than face more of the wrath of John-boy. More details as we get them"

akageorge: Mon Jan 23, 06 at 12:33:19 AM (EST) - kitty kitty

I'm afraid I'm becoming one of those lonely, single cat ladies. I now have a total of five kitties. One, Ewok: born at my sister's house the Valentine's Day after I moved back East, black and fluffy; two, Spot, tiny grey and white female, stray someone dropped off two summers ago and the neighbor used to take care of, but since he got his German shepherd puppy, he doesn't seem to have much time for cats; three, four and five, Buddy, Fred and Ginger, brothers, tiger cats, who are the kittens of another abandoned cat the same neighbor took in a couple of years ago, since disappeared. Ginger won't set foot in the house, but the other two boys rotate in and out, and the girls both stay in since Spot's surgery two weeks ago. Plenty of kitties for one small house.

The boys are due for a doctor's visit when I can find a low-cost neutering clinic nearby.

So I guess I'd better start carrying a canvas shopping bag and not brushing my hair, so I look the part. Oh, wait, I already do that ...

Did I mention I got 12" cut off my hair back in September, just before a trip to Disney World? I'm liking it short (i.e., just below my shoulders) -- I can get away with the ponytail and not brushing thing. I bought an elliptical trainer last night, am going to start exercising off this winter spare tire. Ummm ... let's see ... can't think of any other life changes.

Thanks to those who sent paper and virtual cards. Judi, I hope you're finding some bright spots in this hard time. ((hugs))

Mom's still kicking, still gets out to church and appointments. She forgets some things, but remembers her meds -- if I make a mistake in the weekly sorting, she spots it right away. I guess once a nurse, always a nurse. She still does crosswords, but my sister reads the clues and writes in the answers for her.

Sorry so long -- there's my new year in a (big) nutshell. And I haven't heard the KB yet, but I've heard good reviews. My latest music purchase was the new White Stripes last fall (summer?). It's in my car changer. Great driving music!

I am not decorating or setting up a tree, baking cookies, or sending cards this year. Instead I am visiting old folks daily, my blind mother in assisted living, my deaf dad now in a nursing home, and the inlaws who no longer drive yet expect to be driven every day on some needed errand.

The millionaire Boston uncle died on Thanksgiving day and we are his representative so need to clean out his home and sell it and take care of all his final wishes.

The good news is that the older son got married in September, I might heve already mentioned that. He is the globetrotting, DC living, son who just returned from Beijing and Seoul after a business trip for Oracle. Younger son is building a home in Maine and is not yet married.

Husband is retiring in June. 36 years of high school students has taken a toll and he is ready to stay home and drive me crazy for a change.

I'd love a kitten! Probably not the best idea but I would love having a cat again. I'll have to pass this time.

Hope the rest of you have happy hoildays. I will be spending mine hand holding in a nursing home, at least both boys will get to see their grandparents again.

I know it's the season when I get my annual penguinny card in the mail. Tanks Jon & Diane. Mery Christmas to you both...and anybody else that hasn't posted since Pearl Harbor day. Oh...if there's anybody out there that would like a cute 'lil kitten. I have four. They're numbered sequentially and #1 looks like he's ready to roll. Box trained, eating solids and cute as a button. Looks like a dirty polar bear. #'s 2, 3, & 4 should be ready shortly.
