SRF: Mon Oct 17, 05 at 01:38:13 PM (EDT) - RTE
Forgot to ask where were your seats?? I have season tickets in 522 Upper View (behind home plate)
SRF: Mon Oct 17, 05 at 01:36:50 PM (EDT) - RTE and the Angels
Wow, Scott you called it although it (your prediction) was definitely not a stretch but before Friday night it still looked like the Angels would have a shot. Yeh right, they were totally outplayed by the Sox who would have won even if ALL the calls by the umps went the Angels' way. Pretty disheartening when your "superstar" gets 1 hit in 20 ABs in facing prolly about 30 pitches total. There's always next year.
A Dr Larry sighting/meeting at the Big A Friday afternoon. Yes, yours truly bumped into Larry Singer in front of the stadium and in front of the ESPN Radio 710 radio booth where Mason and Ireland of "The Big Show" (Steve Mason and John Ireland) were doing their show in front of a live audience as opposed to dead Angels bats. Seems Larry's cousin Dave (DeSwing??) is the producer for the Big Show. So it was cool running into you again Larry!!

RTE: Sat Oct 15, 05 at 01:30:54 PM (EDT) - Angels Dysfunction
Geez. You spend money on tix to the ALCS and have to suffer through impatient millionaires swingin' at anything thrown at them. You can play Angels baseball if you don't get on base. And you can't get on base if you swing at shitty pitches. Figgy can't or won't walk, (even though he did last night in his first AB. Can you say anomaly?); Vlad is in choke mode (the same mode he was in while sitting on 299 home runs); Finley, as hard as I pull for him, can't get his 40 year-old body to cooperate with his bat. The way it's going the Sox will be celebrating advancing to the Series on the field at the Big A.
SRF: Fri Oct 14, 05 at 12:32:42 PM (EDT) - Tiki
Yes, the Angels lost a very bad and wrong call!! However, a team usually needs to score more than one run to expect to win.
Figgins and Vladdy need to wake up. I think they will this weekend (I'll be there for all 3).

Well that was a bad call... I will bite my thoughts here.
Hey akageorge...
akageorge: Thu Oct 13, 05 at 01:40:52 AM (EDT) - YRMeetup
Hey, sounds like Thomas is living in paradise. How's about we meet at his place? (And doesn't he have a pool?) ;^)
Hi, all. LTNP. Believe it or not, I went on a vacation -- a real one, with an airplane and a hotel and ... Walt Disney World! With my sister and her family and two teenage friends of the nephews ... stayed at a Disney resort ... had the Disney meal plan ... spent 8 days, had the ultimate Disney experience (all good -- so good that I almost don't want to go back, because there's no way it could be that good again). Never thought I'd say all that good stuff about the mouse, but it really was fun. And we hit right between hurricanes!
Tiki & Diane -- so glad you're OK. I forgot you were going to be down there. One of our sports writers is from Louisiana, and some of his family was missing for a while, but it turned out OK -- you can read about it at www.poststar.com on Thursday, so they tell me.
You've probably all heard about the tour boat sinking that killed 20 senior citizens. That was ours. The community, Lake George, covered by my paper, that is. There is an archive of the photos, video, etc. at poststar.com. What an awful weekend -- no, week -- that was. Lots of sad stuff happening all over the world. Hugs all around to you people here.
Thomas More: Thu Oct 6, 05 at 12:56:51 AM (EDT) - Hi, from the land of infernal sunshine!
Hi, hi. I know, LTNPost. Sunshyne and I moved to Arid-zona last April. Got about half the boxes unpacked now. Loving it here, and it's starting to cool off already. Now we get eight months of really nice weather.
Bluerose, Do you suppose Nancy and Suz might be lurking? I miss them, too. Steph got married and moved to Kansas or Texas, I can't remember which. She still posts on Nicole's group.
I wonder what Shaun A. Mason and Zoetrope are up to these days. Are they still a couple? And Reptile? Last I heard he got religion and moved to Hawaii.
Dr. Larry! Thanks for the inspiring message. Please proxy a hug for you and your lovely bride, from that little ol' matchmaker, me!
My email is still rdamor@pacbell.net, if anyone needs to contact me, and I would appreciate hearing from BüddaJ if there's going to be a social. I'll be coming to Calif. next month, to see the Stones at Anaheim Stadium. We thought it might be the last time when they played there a couple of years ago.
Tiki, I'm glad you're safe after being in the way of Katrina. Did you get any assistance from FEMA?
I'm hoping Walter Trout will be playing in Phoenix one of these days.
SRF (that's Super Radio Fan, for you newbies); Thanks for the reprint. Tells it like it is, doesn't he? Too bad he was preaching to the choir, tho'
Bill Cosby will be speaking at Cooper Union in December. I'll bet he'll have lots to say about the people of New Orleans.
First quotes from Chief Justice Roberts show that he's not a conservative, but a federalist who doesn't recognize the limitations of the federal gov't guaranteed by the Constitution. This during his argument against doctor-assisted suicide, in spite of the fact that doctors have always been regulated by the individual states, not the feds. (rant, rant...)
SRF: Mon Oct 3, 05 at 04:04:40 PM (EDT) - Tiki

You will always be a part of Miss Diane and Tikis Heart.
We are moving to Alabama next year... So I am not sure what it is going to take to get us all back together one more time. But WE MUST. RTE, Dereck, Zoey, Steph, Suz, Kyle, nancy, SRF, RadioJones, PBS, Bashful,Frank, etc.... Everyone! Sorry if missed your name, But we are going to have to do this... Otherwise I will prolly never ever see you all again. I will die with regret. Lets start planning!
Robert Dillworth (yes, him): Sat Oct 1, 05 at 05:15:44 PM (EDT) - Just saying HI and wondering...
Im on a quick lunch break here on a saturday at WORK - yes work - and I was wondering whatever happened to Nancy and Suz?
Im doing the musicians ultimate gig -- Product Tester at Line 6 in Agoura. Hope to catcdh up later -- I really miss you all -- you were part of the best time in my life as I have come to discover...
SRF: Mon Sep 26, 05 at 01:31:49 PM (EDT) - more on Little Steven :>)
LITTLE STEVEN'S KEYNOTE ADDRESS RADIO & RECORDS CONVENTION 2005 - JACOBS MEDIA SUMMIT
Date: Thursday, July 23, 2005
Place: Renaissance Hotel, Cleveland, Ohio
Audience: 250 Program Directors
Little Steven is E Street Band guy Steven Van Zandt, aka "Silvio" on the Sopranos:
Little Steven's two-hour Underground Garage is heard Sunday nights at KLOS
Fred Jacobs introduces 4-minute video bio. At its conclusion the Dovells' "You Can't Sit Down" explodes from the speakers as 5 Go-Go girls come out of the wings surrounding Fred, much to his discomfort. Little Steven enters to thunderous applause. He cuts off the music with a wave of his hand, leans into the microphone and says "Ladies and Gentlemen, Fred Jacobs."
The music returns as the girls exit. A stunned audience applauds wildly as Fred, very uncharacteristically, dances off with them.
Little Steven: Well that was worth the price of admission alone. (more applause and laughter) (paces with the hand held mic for a minute, and then . . . )
I Love Radio! (applause once again erupts) And I feel nothing but love in this room because as I look around, I see only two kinds of people. Our beloved affiliates . . . and future affiliates. (laughter) So now matter what happens in this next half hour, remember what I just said. It's just family talking. And without any further disclaimers let me ask the only important question that is on my mind, and I'm sure you've been thinking about it also, especially lately.
(pause)
WHEN DID THE FUCKING (BLEEP) TAKE OVER?
(applause and laughter)
When? Don't you look forward to the day when your grandson is on your knee and he looks up and says, "Grampa weren't you in radio once?"
"Yes, Grandson," you'll reply.
"Could I ask you something," he'll say.
"Of course, my love, anything," you'll say.
"Grampa where were you WHEN THE FUCKING (BLEEP) TOOK OVER?" (more laughter)
Where were we? What happened? Things are out of line and we're not leaving here today until we straighten it out.
(applause and laughter)
Now I was going to wait for this but we might as well get right to it since it is all everybody's talking about. I have come to praise JACK not to bury him. (laughter - uncertain applause) The guys at Infinity are friends of ours, as is everybody else, we got nothing but friends you all know that. And I've gotta say I'm proud of these guys for having the balls to shake things up. Things needed shaking up. And history will remember them in a very positive way when looking back at this world changing moment. Having said that . . .
Replacing 33 year old New York oldies institution CBS-FM with JACK is like replacing the Statue of Liberty with a blow-up doll.
(eruptions of laughter and applause)
But again, change is good. And necessary. With a little bit of luck JACK will last 10 or 12 months because it is obvious people want something different, they are hungry for something, anything. So it could be 6 months before anybody actually listens to JACK. Once they do it is doomed for 3 obvious reasons. At the moment it is replacing oldies formats but it is not an oldies format in the true sense of the word. It's mostly 80's, some 70's, some 90's. Now it must be said that the oldies format is vulnerable because over the last 5-10 years it has, in a word, sucked. It has sucked for a very simple reason, somebody had the brilliant idea to eliminate the 50's and replace it with the 70's. This was done by somebody uniquely stupid and deaf and ignorant and a bad businessman on top of it all. So naturally, everybody copied it and the 50's disappeared virtually overnight.
Now let's digress and examine this oldies thing for a minute. Assuming you accept the fact that those overseeing the oldies format these last 5 years - 10 years - are, in fact, stupid, deaf, ignorant, and bad businessmen, let's deal with it. As far as stupid, deaf, and ignorant, when it comes to decades that matter, that matter historically, in terms of influence, importance, and never-to-be-heard-again-quality - that is the 50's and 60's. Everything we do, everything we are comes from those two decades.
You're gonna throw one away? You're gonna replace Elvis, Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Burnette, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly, Lloyd Price, and Fats Domino with, all due respect, Donna Summer and the Bee Gees? You're gonna replace primal, vital, timeless, forever cool rock and roll pioneers with disco? Disco?
You wanna know what disco is good for? Disco is for when you're drunk at a wedding with your old lady and you want to act like an idiot and be John Travolta for an hour or two. That's where it belongs. Not on radio.
And to the issue of oldies being bad business - all you hear - I'm assuming from sales people - is we must lower our demo's.The oldies demographic are getting too old - that's the rationale for replacing the 50's with the 70's.
Now if all there was to sell in the world were Fruit Loops, Play Stations, and sneakers - they might have a point. But I got a little secret to share. You know that age group - 35 to 65 - that nobody in sales seems to care about?
THAT'S WHERE ALL THE FUCKING MONEY IS!
(laughter, applause)
I mean ALL the fucking money.
35 to 65.
Memo to sales team - SELL THEM SOMETHING!
And, by the way, if you want younger people listening, you can get that done. And I mean kids, if you want them.
Who is cooler? Early Elvis or Elton John?
What appeals more to kids, Gene Vincent's black leather attitude, Eddie Cochran's teenage frustration, Little Richard's cry of liberation, and Dion's total Soprano's coolness - or the Eagles?
You want wild? Put together the Sex Pistols, Audioslave, and the Wu-Tang Clan - they aren't as wild as Jerry Lee Lewis in his prime.
But you have to explain that. Show it, illustrate, educate, sell it.
Alright - digression over - so JACK isn't oldies so it must be some kind of classic rock/pop hybrid. But JACK doesn't address the two biggest problems of classic rock. 15 years ago I said we're chasing all the personality out of rock radio and into talk and sports. And the ratings went with it.
We need more personality, not less, and JACK has none. No DJ's means no personal relationship with the audience. Eventual apathy is inevitable.
The other big issue classic rock must consider is it must start playing new music again.
I've suggested it to my own affiliates and I'll keep saying it every change I get. We've got a big problem.
Look around. Pearl Jam does some business. Dave Matthews - if he's rock at all - does well. Maybe Oasis breaks this year in the U.S. Maybe Coldplay - if they're considered rock.
But in a real sense, the last big band through the door was U2. That's 25 years ago.
Has anybody stopped to consider that? Basically when our generation stops touring, it's over. That's one reason why we started the Underground Garage format. New Hard Rock, Hip Hop, and Pop can be heard in various places, new Rock and Roll had nowhere to go. We have played more new bands in 3 years than anybody since the 60's. We average 30 new bands a year. That's how many are out there. And we are very picky out of respect to our classic rock affiliates, we know we need to keep the quality level high and we do.
But we can't sell records with 2 hours a week.
Someday somebody will have the balls to put the Underground Garage format on 24-7 on broadcast radio but until then, we only have 2 hours a week.
We need your help.
Rock and Roll is not just that museum down the street. It's a living, breathing animal that needs to be fed.
With new blood. And I'm not saying you need to do as much as we do, we're about 40% new and the rest from the entire 50 years of history. And by the way everybody told us you can't combine old with new but of course you can. As long as you're making your decisions based on musical experience, good taste, and an effective, coherent emotional communication. As opposed to your Ipod on shuffle.
(laughter, applause)
When you properly combine old and new the old records give the new ones a sense of depth, of belonging to an eternal continuum, carrying the flag forward. The new records give the old ones relevance, keeps them vital, connected to the next generation.
And all testing and computer analysis and surveys don't tell you that.
It's all bullshit. When are we going to learn that? (applause)
All that (BLEEP) tells you is what people think they want right now. Well that's not the way great radio happens, or great anything. You don't do a survey before you write a song, or make a record. We are drowning in an ocean of mediocrity because sometimes you gotta have enough historical perspective, and vision, and balls to say we have to combine short term want with long term need.
And yeah you gotta sell it.
If you're playing cool stuff make sure the audience hears it right - in the right context. That is everything.
If to a punky consciousness the Ramones are sugar and the Ronettes are broccoli you play the Ramones into the Ronettes and, because Joey learned to sing from Ronnie and you can hear it, the Ramones become hollandaise and it works.
(laughter, applause)
There is an art to this (BLEEP). You know that. It's the corporate bosses that forget that fact. But it's not just music - we have this problem plaguing every aspect of our culture.
Yes content needs work, yes marketing needs work, but it is the sales teams that need to be re-educated and motivated and inspired and creative. And it's not happening because they are being led by business oversight guys. Content guys should be running companies, marketing guys should be running companies, who put business oversight guys in charge?
(applause)
Wall Street that's who.
Wall Street continues to love and reward and worship short term success for some reason. As the culture and the economy and all our fathers' and grandfathers' and hundreds of years of hard work get trashed in a
generation or two. The tail is wagging the dog.
Wall Street should not be calling the shots.
When did Wall Street ever write a song? Paint a picture? Make a movie? Play a song on the radio that changed somebody's life?
(applause)
Where are the music people?
I see lawyers, accountants, test marketers running the world. Where is the emotional connection?
Where is the passion? This ain't about JACK or BOB or Moe or Larry or Curly. It's about you. Everybody in this room. You are here because you are connected emotionally.
This ain't Harvard Business School. It's fucking Rock and Roll!
(applause)
These Wall Street cats couldn't have gotten us here. They react - they don't create.
They didn't build this industry.
We did it.
And you're not here because it was a smart business decision.
I know what you make.
(laughter)
(pauses - slows down)
You're here because you loved it once. And we've got to find a way to love it again. And communicate that love to our audience. I am determined - together we will find a way. The Revolution is on.
Thank you.
(standing ovation - thunderous applause)

Oh...I also capture Little Steven's Underground Garage as well Rodney on The Roq (who they put on at an ungodly hour)...oh, and Camp Freddy. Radio Shark is an amazing peripheral. Can you imagine if they had it in the days of KSCA??

Tiki-for about the past 3 months i've been recording every Jonesy show with my Radio Shark and Audio Hijack. Makes for some nice iPod filler. Plus, I get to scroll wheel my way through the commercials.

It's GREAT radio this weekend. They're doing a PBS style fundraising drive for New Orleans. The special guests and the giveaway items are AMAZING.

what can I say?? I just "bounced" in here and saw your post. Wow...thanks so much. The feeling's definitely mutual.
I sent that letter around to so many people in my e-mail list - people in my Address Book and previous recipients/senders. Many people coming out of the woodwork. One of the coolest comments I got was from Mike Watt. I get his e-mail blast and he knows who I am from the shows i've seen of his (Banyan's playing DiPiazza's on the 15th!) I sent him the letter. I went to Arthurfest over the weekend and Dos opened. I saw Watt after their set and he looked at me with the smile on his face and glimmer in his eye and said "Happy Birthday, Larry"
Tiki: Sun Sep 4, 05 at 08:14:19 PM (EDT) - Larry
So well said. I have thought a zillion thoughts about that night, knowing that we were there together. I have often wonder that maybe we could have met, chatted for a few extra hours, who knows....
All I can say is that I did get to meet you later. And I love you. You have brought so much joy to our little bunch. I could not imagine not knowing you and Terry. My life is a little more complete. Yes we should be thankful for so many things, Friends, after all these years, we are still friends. We may not bounce into this room often, but we know each and every YR has a home to post.
Tiki: Sun Sep 4, 05 at 08:04:49 PM (EDT) -
First of all by no means am I complaining here. What some of these folks are going through makes me cry. We got off easy.
Anywho, On Saturday night we bounced to the Grand Casino in Biloxie, Mississippi. Went to the buffet and ate tons of crab. Yummy. Diane and I bounced to the roulette wheel, but the minumum bet was 10 dollars... I might add that is high Vegas stakes on the strip, we passed and went to a bar and played a poker machine, Jacks or better, $10 dollars equals 2 hours and tons of free drinks, yes we tipped the bartender...
My Mother - in - Law was tearing it up, prolly won $500.00... And than the rumours starting swirling... Bartender told us straight up, we are throwing you all out so that Brinks can get the money out.
Well we left, my daddy - in - law hit the gas station next to the I10, Premium only, and we headed East. Made it back home to Loxley Alabama (next to Mobile) and we went to sleep. Next Day... Well it was a Sunday, we went out to lunch, bought a gallon of gas for the generator, boarded up the front windows (Batty my MIL demanded it) and went to bed. Ivan roared over a year ago and did minor damage.
Around 7 in the morning Katrina hit. Loxley is about 70 miles from Biloxi. We are in the middle of Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida. The wind gusts snapped the pine trees like match sticks. These match sticks crashed over every inch of the power lines near us. Power was lost by 8 am. And they kept coming down, the power pole that brought power to the house snapped in two. Their ancient satalite disc was shredded. The winds would not stop for 24 hours... The generator died after 7 hours. No electric pump equals no water, showers, etc... We started to smell.
The problem is that out in the woods, all they have is electricity. We asked about a grill... Yep they had one, electric... Yesterday, I smoked 2 Boston Butts on a reject Weber Kettle Grill. Make you want to smake your Mommma sh*t. So much to teach these folks. You do not need power to cook. You can bet your bippy, I am now saving up for a LPS powered Generator, with a transfer switch, before we move on down there.

Larry, that was so sweet! I am honored to have met you, your lovely wife and daughter and that super special canine friend too. I doubt many people from Maine made the trip all across the USA to see you and your friends. I am thinkful for friends far and near. Congratulations on your rebirth-day!
Dr. Larry Singer: Thu Sep 1, 05 at 01:45:36 AM (EDT) - Happy "Birthday" To Me
(Here's a message I sent out to people in my address book) Dear friend/family member/loved one,
Well, its not actually my birthday - but around our household, we consider it a birthday or a rebirth-day, if you will for 17 years ago today, my life was nearly taken away from me, and I had to start all over again.
Well, needless to say, if you know me (which you obviously do) you know about the vats of lemonade I made. I think back over the past 17 years and realize what a joy it was to be around for them. The hundreds (seemingly thousands) of CDs that I have been around to hear and enjoy; the hundreds (seemingly thousands) of concerts I was around to enjoy (each one specialer than the next); and the hundreds (seemingly thousands) of people I have become friends with and have been a part of my life over the years (that includes YOU, o friend/family member/loved one) every last one making it all worth it.
And against every odd, and every warning to the contrary, I managed to get my doctorate, and plan to do many great things. [two hurdles left the licensing exam and Jurisprudence exam]
And yeah along the way I kissed a few toads but I did manage to find my soulmate (and she found me) and along with her came my opportunity to experience parenthood (and a great kid at that). Plus, I found my soul-dog, who for 10 years (and now, beyond), provided me with the most pink-tongue-lickin, black-tail-waggin, and big-heart-havin canine love that has EVER been experienced.
I know this sounds like a lot of back-patting to some but I feel I earned it. I learned 17 years ago that if you have something to say say it. If you need someone to know you love them tell them. If you have something you have been wanting to do but have been procrastinating DO IT! You just never know what tomorrow will bring.
I ask just one simple thing of you. 15 seconds of your time (well in addition to the 10 minutes you took to read this). Use that 15 seconds to think of how precious your life is and how glad you are to be alive, and what is good about your life (alright. that last thing might take more than 15 seconds, so do the Cliffs Notes version). Why 15 seconds?? Because that is the amount of time (I estimate) that transpired in the accident which altered my life (and nearly ended it). If I can take that time to alter my life. YOU can take that time to do something that may potentially improve yours.
Thank you for being a part of my life, and accompanying me on this journey. Its not over yet. It has barely just begun. Two more years, and I will have lived in my 2nd life longer than my 1st. I dont know why I got so reflective this year but I guess it partly has to do with what I said before about saying what it is you want to say.
Love/Sincerely/Later/Au Wiedersein-
Larry

akageorge: Mon Aug 1, 05 at 01:30:30 AM (EDT) - Another year, another festival
Well, this year's Falcon Ridge was one of the best I've worked. We only had one big storm and we had enough warning to shut things down a few minutes before it hit. That passed through and it was a beautiful Friday night. And we had a full moon from the first night ... lovely.
Every song Lowen & Navarro did made me weepy, as it seemed to hold hidden meaning, with Eric's ALS progressing quickly. Dar Williams was there, as were Nerissa and Katryna Nields, Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, Alistair Moock, Vance Gilbert (my favorite), and loads of other great big and small names.
Ani DiFranco was the closing act, and guess who kept popping up on stage to change out her guitars? Our own treehaus! We got to visit for a few minutes backstage, thanks to my press pass.
The bad news: The owners of the farm where FRFF is held have had it up for sale for a few years, and a deal went through the week of the festival. Next year and beyond are up in the air, but they're hoping to find another site in the same county. (If anyone wants to buy me a nice 100-acre parcel in Columbia County, New York, I promise to get you a lifetime pass to Falcon Ridge Folk Festival!!!!)
Tiki: My mom told me you called. Sorry I missed you! I'll be in and out, mostly there noon to 3 p.m. my time. Otherwise I'm sleeping or at work (or on the way to work ... or on the way to sleep ...)
SRF: Tue Jul 19, 05 at 05:48:36 PM (EDT) - Indie 103.1
The Spring '05 ratings Arbitron is out and Indie scored a 1.0 --- their highest ever!! Not sure but I don't think any previous formats at 103.1 FM in LA got a 1.0... They improved from a 0.8 Winter '05 Jan-Feb-March. Spring '05 is Apr-May-June

Well it rocked... Indie is God head!
akageorge: Mon Jul 18, 05 at 12:55:21 AM (EDT) - Falcon Ridge time
I'm getting ready for my working vacation at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival next weekend. I bought a new tent with lots of room, so you're all invited!
Seriously, if anyone will be in the area (NY/VT/Mass. junction), come on over. You can buy tickets at the gate. See falconridgefolk.com for the lineup ... some big names this year.
Geez, that means summer is half over already. Where did the time go? Oh, that's right, it goes faster as you get older. :^)
