Just my 2 cents... But Zappa is King of the SG.

Thomas More: Fri Sep 26, 03 at 09:11:39 PM (EDT) - Springdale! Springdale!

No, not Neil Young. That's Greendale.

It's Janiva Magness, TONIGHT! at Martini Blues, which is located on the SW corner of Edinger and SPRINGDALE (not Bolsa Chica, as I said below).

Gee, I hope no one gets lost. ACME is supposed to be coming down, and if he doesn't see this message he will probably get lost in Huntington Beach.

Thomas More: Wed Sep 24, 03 at 08:07:10 PM (EDT) - Friday night!

I won't be coming up to Hollywood tomorrow night, but I do have plans to see Janiva Magness at "Martini Blues," a nice little blues room on the corner of Edinger Ave and Bolsa Chica Street in Huntington Beach.

Martini Blues is located just south of the 405 Fwy on Bolsa Chica, which is called Valley View Street if you're coming from the 91 or 5 Fwys.

They have good food, too. Cajun catfish, steaks, etc. Good sound, excellent sight lines, good blues. I'm ready already!

Thomas More: Wed Sep 24, 03 at 07:51:25 PM (EDT) - Health, Wealth and Music

I'm pleased to report that I have nearly recovered from a lengthy bout of dyspepsia. From this past February to June, I lost 18 pounds, but I wouldn't recommend it for weight loss. Felt lousy, no appetite, no energy...

"We are what we eat," according to one diet guru of an earlier time. For 64 calories, who said that? Judi knows, I'll bet. (Or knows where to look it up).

I've been taking about 10 different vitamins and 20 nutritional supplements recommended by Dr. Atkins for those with irritible bowel syndrome. I published the whole list here awhile back, so if anyone's interested you can probably find it in the archives.

WoThomas has purchased a copy of the book from which I compiled my list. This book is not about "the Atkins Diet," but rather about which vitamins and supplements have been shown to alleviate certain conditions. Sunshyne is Type 2 diabetic, so she will be looking at what Dr. Atkins recommends for that.

Probably a diet low in carbohydrates, since the body easily turns them into sugar, allowing it to save the fats, which are more difficult to digest but more easily stored. Lazy bodies burn carbs and store fat. Healthy bodies avoid carbs and burn fat instead. It works. Friend of mine lost 40 pounds eating steak and lobster, but no pasta and few grains.

And now to Music...

Hope you are feeling better! Get well soon!

LOL, I have an Exchange List... Oh I do hope my dietitian puts me on 2000 (+) calories a day. I need to gain back a few of the pounds I lost (15 in 2 months). It would make my meal planning a tad easier!

Spent an hour at the Super Market today looking at "Nutrition Facts". Amazing...

Good for you. Take care of yourself now. Diabetes can be managed and you can avoid the complications. As far as the bracelet...you can buy those at any pharmacy.

As for me, I have pneumonia. Was diagnosed the day before the big move. Lucky timing, huh? I'm on heavy duty antioboitics, an inhaler, and I'm supposed to do nothing but sleep. Go back Monday for new chest X-rays. Told the good doc I was moving and couldn't rest. He was not happy.

The move went off without a hitch. Believe it or not, the movers were fantastic. Now I have a mess to put away. It took 6 weeks to pack it up and it'll take 6 weeks to put it away. Issues with the electric outlets in the bedroom. No polarized outlets! They are going to have to fix that. The cat was absolutely freaked. It took her 4 hours to leave the safety of her carrier and start exploring the house. I'm exhausted. But, I think it as well worth it (as long as I don't end up in the hospital). I really like my little house! :-)

Anywho, My Diabetes Management Nurse wants me to start wearing the bracelet. She gave me the ID card. She told me I could buy the bracelet from the ADA. I can not find this on their web site? Am I missing something?

Do you know where I can get one?

Tiki: Fri Sep 19, 03 at 09:45:22 PM (EDT) - tea

Well for the moment... They want to see if I can control it with diet and exercise... LMAO... Me?

My daily eating habits: Morning - Coffee (I have dropped to 1 and 1/2 cups), Lunch - not a thing (even a small bite would wipe me out for the day), Dinner - the later the better.

Before I started the blood pressure meds, I could drink 2 pots of coffee a day. I could not understand why I was always tired. I assumed it was the caffeine crash. I really had no clue why a simple lunch would zonk me out. Hmmm, I thought rice and pasta was a healthy choice. You can bet that I always had a nice big piece of bread on the side. I do not tend to eat fast food, so for some reason or another, I just decided lunch was not worth it. Oh boy...

LOL... Dinner. Well by this point, having a pack of smokes, 2 pots of coffee, why in heck would I be hungry until 9 pm. And then I would get very hungry. I need to change my habits...

Kind of strange.. I have put up some great Diabetes info on my client’s hospital web sites. Never gave it much thought. This was info for others, not me... Not me.

tea (aka Mrs. Dr.): Fri Sep 19, 03 at 01:33:37 PM (EDT) - Tiki

Have you considered involving yourself in any types of clinical trials. There are a few out there specifically geared towards Type 2. You would probably learn a lot about it, as well as help others. Stay heathly, and remember pasta is just atsap spelled backwards!

Tiki: Thu Sep 18, 03 at 10:56:29 PM (EDT) - I must add...

I am going to miss: rice, pasta, doughnuts, yada yada yada... but I can still eat a little bit of ice cream each night... Yowzer!

Tiki: Thu Sep 18, 03 at 10:53:10 PM (EDT) - The plot thickens...

I have Type 2 Diabetes...

I must say - after the shock - and it was a bit of shock - managing this little problem will be a breeze. They gave me this ultra-tech blood glucose monitoring system, an hour mini education, and a new mind set.

Not as scary as I thought...

tea (aka Mrs. Dr.): Sat Sep 13, 03 at 11:59:38 PM (EDT) - Larry Hovis

...was a friend of my dad (the Johnny Cash whistler). My dad was co-owner of a club in Santa Monica (The Horn) where many celebs would come and try out their acts before taking them to Vegas, or other venues. Larry (who was a small fry compared to Bob Crane and Werner Klemperer on Hogan's Heros) was good friends with my mom & dad, and one summer (1970) my brother and I spent many (many!) days on the set of the Heros. I have lots of autographed pics from those days. Larry was a gentle man, soft spoken, but with a funnybone that was contageous. By the way...Richard Dawson was the cutest!

Thomas More: Sat Sep 13, 03 at 04:31:33 PM (EDT) - Larry Hovis, R. I. P.

Actor Larry Hovis, who played Sgt. Carter in the long-running TV series "Hogan's Heros," has died of cancer in Houston, TX, where he taught drama at Texas State University. Hovis was 67.

Mr. Hovis was also involved in the creation of Martin and Rowen's "Laugh-in," in which he also performed.

While Mr. Hovis' work may not have affected so many people in the way the Johnny Cash's did, it is fair to say that in both cases the considerable talent they demonstrated in their performances caused their deaths to be newsworthy.

Hi Ms. tea; My post was not a complaint. I merely wondered why the media (and apparently the rest of us) dwell so much on the death of celebrities, icons, kings and well-known rabble-rousers.

I'm reminded of a story my friend the anthropologist liked to tell. It seems that wolves, in the wild, don't react to the death of a member of the pack, when they are killed in a fight or while trying to bring down a meal.

On the other hand, when a wolf dies of no apparent reason, such as old age, the pack circles around the corpse, moaning and howling as if to mourn.

tea (aka Mrs. Dr.): Sat Sep 13, 03 at 12:24:18 PM (EDT) - On Death & Dying

Thomas, that's me. I tend to post the obits. I can only speak for myself on this one, but until I was ~ 30 I really didn't pay much attention to the coming and going of people. (Except for a few that deeply touched me for one reason or another, Helen Keller, John F. Kennedy (Sr.), Freddie Prinz (Sr.), Elvis, John Lennon). Your post got me wondering. For me it's like a small flashback. I stop and think for a moment, where was I (in my life) when I first heard of / saw / listened to that person. Then I can see all the things I've been through since then. A marriage, a divorce, the birth of Lynlea, the completion of school, that trip to Europe, etc. Sometimes the death of a celebrity is like watching TVLand. I'm transported back to that time and place. With Johnny Cash, I instantly thought of my step-dad (who died a few years ago). He LOVED Johnny Cash, and had every one of his "records." He'd stack them on the spindle and all day on Saturday while doing his "honey-do" list he'd listen and whistle (off key usually). I was a kid. 10 and 11 years old. But it made, and left, a deep impression. My brother is a huge Johnny Cash fan, and I know he was moved by his death. As for Jack Tripper (John Ritter), I have thought of him as the male Lucille Ball with regards to his physical comedy. I met him once, briefly in Santa Monica, and he was courteous and humorous as a person could be. I was sad for his family (young daughter, young marriage). Just the same as I would be if it were a neighbor. I don't "mourn" these people, don't get depressed over it, because you're right, it is normal. But that doesn't mean I don't want a chance to say goodbye to them when they go. And my posts of RIP are just that. On that note, I'm going to watch I Love Lucy (because I do!). Love you Thomas.

jakbeni: Sat Sep 13, 03 at 03:53:45 AM (EDT) - My Zoo Highlight

Since this room is part of the Graphic Penguin website and I did make a reference about feeling like a penguin in my last post, thought I'd share my zoo highlight with you. Several years ago, was in Chicago sometime around x-mas on a sub-zero day. I went to Lincoln Park Zoo, the free zoo on the city's near north shore, and the outdoor exhibits were deserted with one notable exception, the penguin exhibit. These birds were haveing a party. I never seen them so animated in my life, jumping in and out of the pond as if they were having fun. It was fun watching them in the weather they were born for.

jakbeni: Sat Sep 13, 03 at 03:45:47 AM (EDT) - Street Scene - the Ugly Side

Your feet take a pounding at this event since there is no place to sit. so after 3 days on my feet, I felt like a penguin the next day. Walked like one also. Also came down with a head cold this week which is still with me. Must have picked it up down in San Diego. Took Thursday off from work. Called in sick about 8 AM and went back to sleep. got up briefly a few times, but went back to sleep after I laid down again. Did not get out of bed to stay up for any significant time until 3:30 PM. That made me glad I took the day off. Would not have been very productive had I gone into work. But hey, I'm a glutton for punishment since I'll probably go again next year. If any of you ever go, you'll be on your feet a lot. So my advice is to bring comfortable shoes.

jakbeni: Sat Sep 13, 03 at 03:39:05 AM (EDT) - San Diego's Street Scene

As always, Street Scene was a lot of fun. Got front in the audience front row for the B-52's, the Allman Brothers, Nickel Creek, Macy Gray, and R.E.M. Macy is not quite my genre of music, so did not know what to expect, but she was between Nickel Creek and REM and I did not want to give up my front row, so I stuck around. She was quite good, Also seen X, the Goo Goo Dolls, Concrete Blond, Wilco, the Subdudes, Social Distortion, the Wild Magnolias, and Flogging Molly. The highlight of the whole festival was Sunday night. When REM took stage, Michael, thier lead singer, mentioned that he did not eat and therefore was real hungry. Then he says, "You didn't come to hear me complain about that. I'll get something to eat after the show." Later on, a waitress works her way through the crowd carrying a pizza. Nobpdy claimed it, so she went back to the pizza stand. She later comes back into the audience with the pizza and the crowd chants "Pizza Pizza Pizza". Mike asks if that pizza was for him and the waitress passed it over to the band. Mike was very flattered that the audience bought him the pizza. This was fun to watch. He had some one take it back stage and am guessing he ate it after the show.

Thanks for all the great music you gave us over the years. Rest in peace good buddy.

Tiki: Fri Sep 12, 03 at 09:19:19 PM (EDT) - Thomas More

Just my 2 cents here...

I am not sure I would throw the “celebrity” status on any of the above (and I will include Mr. Ritter). All were folks’ folk. Not one Madonna BE in this group.

I will prolly piss in my pants, when (and they will) Nash-vile dances around Mr Cash’s life and death. Hello Nash-vile. You tossed Johnny Cash. Said you no longer needed him. You did. Thank God, Mr. Rubin (DefAmerica) showed Nash-vile that he was still a force to be dealt with. Keep your sugar coated Nash-vile carp. Johnny Cash and the Carter Family (and Mr. Jones) did more for Nash-vile than 99% of the carp I hear on your Country Music radio stations these days.

Tiki: Fri Sep 12, 03 at 08:53:00 PM (EDT) - Not a very good week.

Two folks that I cared very much for left us this week. And I am sad to say that I can not put the thoughts I have, on paper, let alone a post. Many of you know my love for Mr. Cash... But I always thought I was one of the few who out there who understood Mr. Zevon’s incredible talent.

I prolly might have missed this gem, if it were not for David Lindley. My favorite Warren Zevon song! I post this with Johhny Cash and Warren Zevon in mind. I will miss you both.

Play It All Night Long

Grandpa pissed his pants again
He don’t give a damn
Brother Billy has both guns drawn
He ain’t been right since Vietnam

“Sweet home Alabama”
Play that dead band’s song
Turn those speakers up full blast
Play it all night long

Daddy’s doing Sister Sally
Grandma’s dying of cancer now
The cattle all have brucellosis
We’ll get through somehow

“Sweet home Alabama”
Play that dead band’s song
Turn those speakers up full blast
Play it all night long

I’m going down to the Dew Drop Inn
See if I can drink enough
There ain’t much to country living
Sweat, piss, jizz and blood

“Sweet home Alabama”
Play that dead band’s song
Turn those speakers up full blast
Play it all night long

Thomas More: Fri Sep 12, 03 at 03:54:42 PM (EDT) - Dead Guys

We don't get much news in here, except for the obituaries. Why is a celebrity's death so newsworthy? Why don't they broadcast those accolades while they're still alive? The media had tributes ready for Bob Hope for the past 25 years! They could have made a series!

Nobody gets out of here alive, so why is anyone's death newsworthy, when they're over 70? It's routine. Everybody does it.

I agree that it's a tragedy when a relatively young person like Warren Zevon dies. Otherwise, I think the fascination we have with celebrities dying is partly that we expect them to be immortal, and also a holdover from a time when the death of a celebrity really affected the lives of ordinary citizens (lords and kings, usually; entertainers weren't celebrities then). It's the practice of "The King is dead! Long live the King!"

Dear Friends or Foes,

You all are in my address book, so here is the news: The RIAA is the company going after all music downloaders and swappers, (aka Kazaa users, etc.) I am here to inform you if your the one they are after or not. The first step to find out if your being tracked, you'll need your ip address to do this. You can figure out how to find it your own way or you can go to this web site, which will tell you http://www.lawrencegoetz.com/programs/ipinfo/ .

Second step after you have redeemed your ip address is to go to this site http://www.eff.org/IP/P2P/riaasubpoenas/ .

At this web site type in your ip address in the box provided. Then click on check. It will either say congratualations your not on the list or something that indicates your on the RIAA list.

If your on the list your totally screwed and you'' be sued for thousands and possibly hundred thousands. If your not on the list I advise you not to download any music for a while, I'm talking months and months, maybe even years, until this whole thing blows off and they simply dont care anymore.

If any of you need help with doing this procees email me at [email address]@aol.com Or instant message me at [email address].

Thank You.

Glad you survived your trip. I trust it was a pleasant one.

I'm just about packed up. Just have the electronics, which are many. A major PITA. Appliances come this weekend. Moving next weekend. I'll be soooo glad when this is over.

I did manage to stop packing long enough to put a new 120GB- 8MB cache hard drive in the 'puter. WIth the iPod, the tunes were starting to overtake my 40 GB hard drive. Now lots of room for tunes and pictures. After I'm settled in, I want to learn how to use the digicam.

Humidity was not much a factor — thank goodness — More or less sticking one's head into a fire pit, was the order of the day. For some insane reason, due to TV, the game started at 3 pm CST. I love the deep south, but at 5 pm the fat ol Sun stands still. The results tend to lean to fried humans. It was not right.

For some reason, the powers that be at Auburn, decided to screw us SC fans. As I recall, we gave Auburn a whole section in the shade last year at the Colisium. How nice of Auburn, we fans who made the trip, were placed on the top 4 rows (spread out) in nose-bleed city, to bake.

We prayed for the clouds on the left to shack their butts, and by half time the Sun was blotted out...

Yes! SC Looked very good. Serves them right!

KD: Mon Sep 8, 03 at 08:23:32 PM (EDT) - Tiki

Although I didn't see the game, I understand that SC, against Auburn, in summer humidity, looked dominating, especially defensively.
