Tiki: Sun Aug 10, 03 at 11:33:37 PM (EDT) - Yowzer jakbeni

The room has spoken... Keep those reviews coming.

Very sorry if my post led you to think otherwise. ;)

Thomas More: Sun Aug 10, 03 at 09:38:06 PM (EDT) - Hi Judi!

Did you check out the Atkins diet, at the link I posted below?

Are the degrees getting warmer these days? I'm sure you've noticed that the years are getting shorter lately. I wonder if the same is true of the temperature.

I've been aware of the heat more than usual this summer. It's true, we have had unusually-high humidity (over 50%!) lately, which we're not used to. But I think it's because for the past several years I've been in an air-conditioned office all day, and other than lunchtime I was hardly aware of the heat.

jakbeni; Keep those reviews coming! And closing tags, too ;^)

I mean, how else would we hear about groups like The Bobs" or "Throwrag," if jakbeni didn't scout them out for us?

Judi: Sun Aug 10, 03 at 05:16:41 PM (EDT) - they bother ME!

Only because I'm jealous he gets to go to so many and I get to see none. But then again he is single, can go and do whatever he wants, and he loves to attend live music events and share with us his adventures. So it is not a BAD thing at all. If I ever get to a live music event I'll be sure to share all the glorious details with ya. The only thing I have to share today is a bunch of lobsters and steamers and a whopping big fruit salad and whoopie pies. However we had our son, his girlfriend and her mother over for an inside picnic today and all that is left over are 2 lobsters, some soggy fruit and 2 whoopies. It has been raining here for 2 solid weeks, moss is almost growing on the inside walls of the house. Mainers aren't used to 100% humidity and temperatures in the 80's for long stretches of time. We are getting really cranky. However the lobster feed helped calm us down briefly, but if I don't get an air conditioner darn soon I will dissolve into a messy puddle of sweat. This just isn't natural!

tea (aka Mrs. Dr.): Sun Aug 10, 03 at 03:05:37 PM (EDT) - RE: Do my concert reviews bother you?

They don't bother me either...in fact they let me know that someone sees more shows than Dr. Larry!

Tiki: Sun Aug 10, 03 at 02:23:23 PM (EDT) - jackbeni

RE: Do my concert reviews bother you?

Not one bit... ;) AFAIK.. Music (live and studio) is still the number one topic here!!!! ;)

jakbeni: Sun Aug 10, 03 at 03:37:23 AM (EDT) - A fun Story

The lead singer for the group that warmed up for Heart Sunday night had a fun story. He said: I have a friend that was really into Road Runner and Deputy Dog cartoos. And he was a big chain smoker, and not just cigarettes, so he was usually way out there. And he lived with his parent's. So one day I walked in there and he said "Where have you been?". And I said I've been at work all day. So he starts telling me that he seen this Deputy Dog episode that was the funniest thing you ever saw and starts explaning it to me in detail from beginning to end. Then he says, "You know what that Coyote's problem is. He keeps using those Acme brand products. Those Acme brand products don't work a darn." So the warm up artist wrote a song for his friend called Smoking in Bed

jakbeni: Sun Aug 10, 03 at 03:28:58 AM (EDT) - Too Bold

Sorry about that! Obviously missed a closing HTML tag.

jakbeni: Sun Aug 10, 03 at 03:27:33 AM (EDT) - Can't Forget This!

It wouldn't be me if I did not post about my concert going, which took a break M-W, but has gone on the other nights. Last Saturday, seen Roxy Music at the OC fair. Brian Ferry still looks the same. Was fun hearing some of their old songs. Heart did the Greek Theater on Sunday night. The Wilson Sisters can still 'Kick It Out'! Nancy is just as cute as she was back in the '70's. Like many of us including yours truly, Ann has become a little more plump in her old age. But she can still put on a great show which is what gets me to go out to see them. Thursday night, seen my faovrite acapella group the Bobs in a free concert at the courtyard in front of Culver City City Hall (for more info on these free shows, go to the website fior Boulevard Music and scroll down to where they talk about free concerts at Culver City city hall. Last night, went to see the Mother Jones Band at the Malibu Inn for their CD release party. They started with a Grateful Dead cover (not surprising since their music style is very similar) and then did all the songs on their new album. Even met the guys in the band. Fun Night. And tonight, I went to see Bonnie Raitt at one of my favorite venues Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. For one of the songs during her encore, she even had her father come out on stage with her and accompany her in singing a song. That had a very nice touch.

jakbeni: Sun Aug 10, 03 at 03:11:40 AM (EDT) - Tiki

Don't feel bad. I'm on high blood pressure medication myself. If I forget to take it in the morning, my blood pressure shoots through the ceiling (like around 160/120). That's always scary.

jakbeni: Sun Aug 10, 03 at 02:54:34 AM (EDT) - Free Music Videos

Speaking of music, you can view free videos by primarily lesser known artist such as RTE's friend Kerry Getz at at the website for Kulak's Woodshed. Three artist I highly recommend are flamenco guiar wizard Robby Longley who you may remember me raving about as being one of the best guitarists in this town despite his lack of name recognition, John McEuen who is a founder of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he plays banjo on this video clip and is accompanied by 2 other excellent pickers: one on mandolin and one on guitar), and the Dave McKelvy Trio which consists of 3 guys all playing harmonica, including lead, rhythm, and bass harmonica. If anyone else has anyone else they recommend, please post since I'm always interested in finding out about talent that I am currently not familiar with.

jakbeni: Sun Aug 10, 03 at 02:43:00 AM (EDT) - Tiki

RE: ummmm, when do you not go out and see shows? Next weekend I won't be seeing any shows on account I'm going up to San Francisco to put up with my prison warden (a.k.a. my sister). Would you rather hear me bitch and moan about that relationship? I don't think so.

Do my concert reviews bother you? I think its ironic if you do since the original YR was created by KSCA primarily as a place where listerners could discuss music. But if it does, I'll quietly disappear into cyber-space.

Tiki: Sat Aug 9, 03 at 09:55:43 PM (EDT) - ACK

I am shrinking...

Tiki: Sat Aug 9, 03 at 09:52:59 PM (EDT) - Thomas

LOL... Ummm, I think I need to gain weight. At this moment I am 3 pounds over my weight when I graduated from high school. That would be 155. I am now at 158.

One of the reasons my good doctor (Dr. Hammer) is putting me into a diabetes management program.

Thomas More: Sat Aug 9, 03 at 04:40:50 PM (EDT) - More fun...

For the link, below, you can click HERE

Thomas More: Sat Aug 9, 03 at 04:37:21 PM (EDT) - Where's Stefan when we need him?

I guess I get the long post award, since Stefan Daystrom hasn't been here lately.

Tiki; Try Dr. Atkins' diet. You'll lose weight, your blood pressure and cholesterol will go down, and you will live longer as a result.

And, of course you should give up tobacco. It's known to be harmful, and it doesn't even get you high!

But don't forgo an occasional brew or glass of wine. It's thought that an ounce of alcohol daily contributes to healthy blood vessels. However, if you drink a six-pack or more at a time, you should cut back. Moderation is good. My limit is two or three. I like to get a buzz, but not falling-down stupid.

Tiki: Sat Aug 9, 03 at 12:33:29 AM (EDT) - Goodness

But if I were to die... fear not... I will make sure the tiki wizard keeps this room up forever. I can do that! I have connections! ;)

Tiki: Sat Aug 9, 03 at 12:24:25 AM (EDT) - oh my...

Hmmmmm, My Dad died at the age of 47.

47! When he died (He was 17 at my birth) I sort of blew it off. You can ask my circle. My reply that night was everyone dies sooner or later. So be it.

Than I hit 40. Hmmmmmm... 7 years left? Now I am almost 43. Sorry... I have worked my rear end off the last 6 years

For the first time that I know of, I can enjoy my hard work. Die at 47.. 67... NO... I refuse to buy into that. Stop drinking beer and smoking? Why not! Lots of things I need to do before I die.

quantity of years

Just my 2 cents here.. But Now that I have a clue... Can I trade in my first 20 years for an additional 20 years later? I try to enjoy everyday... I tie my sneakers shoe laces every day... I bounce around... I live my life to the fullest. But I would not mind living to a hundred... Life is very very good... for me...

If kind Webby would just add " < br > " following "Folic Acid; 800 mcg" (below), I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks - Thomas More #08129964

Thomas More: Fri Aug 8, 03 at 04:59:10 PM (EDT) - Hi Judi!

Have you read Dr. Atkins? A friend of mine about your age did the no-carb diet after his brother lost weight and actually lowered his cholesterol on this rather high-fat diet!

My friend Mike lost nearly 50 lb over the past year, and he looks about 10 years younger! He had been on Lipitor for high cholesterol, and after six months of no carbs/no sugar, his cholesterol was so low that his doctor took him off Lipitor!

Like anything, it probably works better for some people than others. Mike has followed the diet religiously, even sparing the orange slices that's served after sushi, and of course no rice. And he also takes the vitamins and supplements recommended by Dr. Atkins for health maintenance.

As you know, it's unusual for a medical doctor to recommend vitamins and supplements, and of course Dr. Atkins diet flew in the face of traditional "healthy" diets, in which lots of carbs are allowed, if not sugars, but very little fat.

The bad result of the low-fat fad has been the substitution of natural fats like butter with synthetic trans-fatty acids found in margarine and anything deep fried in commercial vegetable oils. Even before Dr. Atkins, WoThomas switched us back to butter.

It's been established (and touted by the drug manufacturers) that cutting fats from one's diet will only lower cholesterol by maybe 10 - 15 percent. This is because the liver makes cholesterol, and it now appears that the liver tends to make more cholesterol when less than the normal amount of natural fats are consumed. If you go on a low-fat diet without taking a cholesterol-lowering drug, your cholesterol might actually go up!

I don't need the diet, having lost 18 lb since March, as a result of my chronic dyspepsia (aka lack of appitite). However, I have just recently started taking the vitamins and supplements recommended by Dr. Atkins for my condition. Here's what you need for better health of the digestive system.

Vitamin A (beta carotine); 25,000 IU
Vitamin B5 (pantathenic acid); 900 mg
Vitamin C; 1,000 mg
Vitamin D3; 600 IU
Vitamin E; 400 IU
Folic Acid; 800 mcg
Essential Oils (including Omega-3 fatty acids); 3,600 mg
Glutamine; 5 grams (1 tsp powder)
Probiotic Trio (beneficial bacteria); 1 tsp powder
Gamma-oryzanol; 500 mg
Zinc; 50 mg
Aloe Vera (oral, liquid or powder); 1 tsp
Cat's claw extract; 2 capsules
Curcuminoids; 50 mg
Grape seed/pycnogenol; 150 mg
Quercetin; 600 mg
Selenium; 200 mg
Chlorella; 1/2 tsp
Manganese; 20 mg
PABA; 750 mg
Propolis; 1/2 dropper of tincture in water)
Phosphatidyl Cholene; 750 mg

I hasten to add that "Cat's claw" is a plant. They don't cut off any kitty's claws to make this supplement!

Judi; on Dr. Atkins diet, you can eat all the lobster you want!

Look it up here: www.atkins.com

Judi: Fri Aug 8, 03 at 09:31:39 AM (EDT) - death

Everything and anything can and will kill you eventually. There are some health problems you can control on your own and some that need medical intervention. I could or should do something about my weight, but I don't. I can and do use medical intervention to control my sky high blood pressure and my wacky thyroid. I do think younger folks should take care of their health but right now I don't want to live to be an old person in a nursing home until I'm 100. My folks are not enjoying life now, it is a constant struggle for them to just get out of bed each day, they can't enjoy food, they can't see or hear much anymore. They are miserable and pay $250/DAY to have a roof over their head. If we can put a sick animal out of their misery, why don't humans have the same choice? So from now on I'm going for quality of life over quantity of years. If I die tomorrow, I go out happy.

Tiki: Thu Aug 7, 03 at 11:41:13 PM (EDT) - Poogie

Hmmmm, looks like my good Doctor is signing me up for a spin in a diabetes management program. Not that I have diabetes, but am leaning towards high-risk... Prevention is the key word here... Tests as a whole were very positive! Looks like Altocor (Zorco may be great, but not worth the pain it induced) is working! My Blood pressure is hitting 120/80. Yowzer!

Anywho... It sounds like GMH has a wonderful program. But I am in South Bay, so I will go South Bay...

While I am at it... Everyone (I mean everyone) reaching the age of 45 should (MUST) go to your doctor and have a test. Diabetes will kill you. But it can be controlled. Better to be like me and start prevention before it takes root. Just my 2 cents...

KD: Thu Aug 7, 03 at 10:25:02 PM (EDT) - Official Punkin review of The O.C.

"It's a really good show, but it's SO true it makes me sick!"

(Punkin, as a nickname, is getting a bit dated. Must think of another.)

Poogie - Natural gas is the way to go if possible. I don't miss the laundry room -- not a bit.

jackbeni: I can't believe I missed the show at House Of Blues. I've got a connection that gets me in. I've seen Throwrag three times there and loved them every time! They have a real avid following and have the potential to hit it big, I believe. They put on a great show!

Dr. Singer: Thu Aug 7, 03 at 02:37:36 AM (EDT) - White Room tool
lsinger9404@cox.net

Oh wow...it's been a while since I've been here...but i'm using my new computer toy to quickly go through. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone. It's called Powermate. It's a silver (they also come in black) USB device. It's got a controllable blue throbbing base. You get to a long web page and just turn the knob and it flies through the posts. Its programmable for each application...or it can be universal. You can use it as a vbolume knob, a quick mute, and a scroller. Apparently, there's all sorts of hacks on line. Jon...you should buy some and paint 'em white and sell them as "Whiteroom" knobs to raise money.

Read about it here. [Also...make note....they have a new product called Radio Shark, initially Mac only, that's like Tivo for your radio through your computer. You can intercept radio broadcasts and record them on your computer (as if there's anything worthwhile on the radio anymore). More importantly, it will work with internet streams. It's not out yet, but will be in the fall. Expect it to come and go quickly.

akageorge: Wed Aug 6, 03 at 03:45:24 AM (EDT) - Poogie, come see us!

It's amazing what will fit in one of those Ryder vans. They're easier than you might think to drive ... and you can sleep in the back if you pack it just right, saving the cost of lodging for the cross-country trip! ;^)

Had a nice vacation last week and a half. Falcon Ridge Folk Festival rocked, as usual. Big name this year was Arlo Guthrie. They expected 22,000 people on Saturday. The workshop stage audiences were the size of the mainstage audience when I first started going, in 1997. But it's still a small-event feel, especially if you know a few folks there. Next year I'm going to apply for a press pass and get some good photos!

Rain, rain, go away ... you want humid? It was 78 degrees today but it felt more like 90, with thunderstorms hovering in the distance. People get tetchy in weather like this. But the beans and cucumbers are busting out all over.

Tiki: Mon Aug 4, 03 at 09:51:06 PM (EDT) - Poogie

Natural gas (hook up) is not an option?

I really have no clue what a good electrician charges by the hour these days. My guess: maybe $35.00 by the hour? Run over to Electronic City (They are in Burbank - and major God Head) and ask for a recomondation. They know the best!!!

Do not bring your CC to Electronic City! It is a Candy Store... It is a wonderful Candy Store.. A+++

Poogie: Sun Aug 3, 03 at 07:07:51 PM (EDT) - A trip to the Northeast is in order!

Bummer, Judy. Too bad I can't haul the stuff in a U-Haul. Always wanted to see that part of the world!

Tiki: At the appliance store, they showed my the dryer plug and told me I would have to have 220V. I'm fairly sure the garage does not have that. There was never a dryer in there. Only a washer. Actually, there is room only for the washer. I'm getting stackable separates so they fit. I also have to put a dryer vent in. :-( but I will do whatever it takes to get a washer and dryer, darnit! I put in my time at the laudry room. Never again! No more doing my laundry at midnight because it's so busy. No more nasty hairs and shredded tissue all over the machines. No more hot water washes when it's set to cold. No more melting my clothes in the dryer!

Tiki: Sun Aug 3, 03 at 05:54:25 PM (EDT) - Poogie

ACK.. 220v is great if you plan on putting in an Arc welder...

Think 110v - 115v... Otherwise you will have to have a dedicated circuit... Factor in a bit of RF and EMI. Thinking a bit about Burbank, you prolly have a true 220 already there. Look for a "round" Y shaped AC input in your garage or washer/dryer area.

Burbank rocks, and I used to live nearby... In fact only a block above Chandler... Lots of noise going on, even 4 miles away, from those BIG power wires... May I suggest a Power Conditioner? As awhole I do not buy into this over priced Audio hi-fi carp... But I will say... living where you are soon to be living... A Panamax MAX 5100 is the ticket...

Judi: Sun Aug 3, 03 at 01:39:17 PM (EDT) - oh Poogie

If you only lived closer I could set you up with a housefull of furniture and appliances, all free!

I have the entire contents of my parents home at my house right now, and that is on top of half the stuff from my in-laws, the left over 'I'll-want-to-come-get-it-someday' stuff from both sons and my own junk. Some days I'm tempted to burn the place down accidentally, then I think of the computer stuff and decide against that. But this horrible nightmare is about to come to a wonderful end tomorrow. Dad finally moves in to the assisted living residence with mom tomorrow. They have only 1 room so can't keep or use much anyway and I can finally get rid of all their stuff. And at the rate they are both progressing, next stop will be a nursing home in 6 mos or so. My kids have until New year's eve to remove their belongings and then everything goes out to the curb with a sign saying "free, help yourself!" I have become a cruel b#tch.

Poogie: Sat Aug 2, 03 at 10:36:54 PM (EDT) - Tiki

I'm sure Ms. Diane will not need her arm twisted! For info on the VW iPod connection: http://www.ipodlounge.com/ipodnews_comments.php?id=P735_0_7_0_C

Sigh. I've been running around today, trying to find appliances and bedroom furniture. This moving thing is draining. I might have to get the garage rewired for 220V (for the dryer). Tiki, do you have any idea what that might cost?

Tiki: Sat Aug 2, 03 at 07:38:37 PM (EDT) - In a posting frenzy...

All is well again. Pro Football will be on TV in minutes. I will have my SC season tickets (including the away game at Auburn) very soon... All is pretty darn awful good!

Tiki: Sat Aug 2, 03 at 07:35:39 PM (EDT) - VW and iPods

Hey... We bought a Bug.. Where is our FREE iPod?

Hmmmmmmmm (add afew mmmmm''s) but it sounds like there is a kit that allows you to hook up an iPod to the VW's monsoon (sp?) audio head unit... LOL (X2)... Ms Diane just might let me buy one... now....

Tiki: Sat Aug 2, 03 at 07:31:06 PM (EDT) - jakbeni

ummmm, when do you not go out and see shows? ;)

jakbeni: Sat Aug 2, 03 at 06:39:33 AM (EDT) - Alice Cooper and Ted Nugent at HOB-Sunset

Another fun show. Went there primarily for Alice, but I even enjoyed watching Ted perform. Specifically what I liked the best about Ted I will leave to myself for reasons I won't post. But Alice mostly songs he recorded back in the 1970's. Recall being a pimply faced kid back then. Recall he was every parents worst nightmare back in those days. But then he started to appear on talk shows and people realized that was just his stick. Was great hearing these songs again. I have most of Alice's old stuff on vinyl, but am currently without a stereo. Will probably get a new one later this year, but when I do, I promised myself to get a good audiofile quality one rather than a cheap one. By the way, Alice apparently has a new album out and he did play a cut from that album.

jakbeni: Sat Aug 2, 03 at 06:31:53 AM (EDT) - Rev. Horton Heat, Southern Culture on the Skids, and Throw Rag@HOB-Disney

My Thursday night show. Having seen all 3 bands at least twice before, I knew what I was in store for. Great show! Throw Rag and the Reverend were their usual rockin' selves. Was great to hear other Rev. Heat fans singing along with all his greatest hits. Was really impressed with S.C.O.T.S. this time. When I seen them in the past, despite good musicianship, their sound was nevert quite right. This time, the person running the sound board got it right! Makes a big difference. And at the end of their performance, they did the one song they do where they invite women on stage to eat some fried chicken. But this time it was just women from backstage. Along with this group, there was a guy who came on stage who dressed as a woman. It was pretty obvious that he wasn't a drag queen, but rather someone who dressed this way just to get on stage and have fun. He was throwing physically pieces of the chicken to some of the women in the first row and they were catching it with their mouths andn throwing other pieces of chicken out into the audience and the audience was throwing it back on stage. This was pretty wild. By the way, Thomas, they did do the Camel Walk which is the name of the song that KSCA played about the snack cracker. Great show! I enjoyed myself.

Tiki: Sat Aug 2, 03 at 12:18:43 AM (EDT) - The Dead or what ever...

I am a total Donna G. fan

Always have been.. And I do think it is kewl that Joan has stepped up to the plate... But SOMETHING is missing... With out Mr. Garcia... Hmmmmm,

Tiki: Sat Aug 2, 03 at 12:08:34 AM (EDT) - Mr More

Yowzer - my Thorens TD 160 MK II (with the kewl SME Series III) showed up this week. 1980 godhead, with what I can tell. Hmmmm, someone straped a low-end Grado on it, but who cares... The seller stripped it down, but I have rebuilt it. Hmmmmm, now to improve it!

Nice to see Shure back in biz on carts. My heart is set for the new V15VxMR. Guess I have no choice as Shure is not creating new stylus for the old carts...

So much to do... Very stock... Planning on many damp hacks soon.

But I have decided that I need a very mint copy (Phat vinyl) of "Let It Be" for the first pass... after I get the tone arm wired...

np: "Get Back" on my "Let it Be" LP I bought a real long time ago...

Or... LOL... Something Mr Bear produced... Not sure about this 2003 Dead thingie...

Tiki: Fri Aug 1, 03 at 09:49:12 PM (EDT) - Poogie

Yowzer Poogie!

I want lemon trees (and maybe a lime tree) ... ;)

Thomas More: Fri Aug 1, 03 at 08:44:06 PM (EDT) - Rodger, the concert champion!

If there was a hall of fame for concertgoers, Rodger would be the first nominee.

My concert-going has been somewhat limited lately. I actually missed Walter Trout's most-recent appearance in the southland, but he will be back on August 30, at the Seashore Marina Hotel, which is located in Long Beach Marina, on the border of Long Beach and Seal Beach, right off Pacific Coast Highway. Warm up the pumkin, kyle, and head south on PCH.

I did manage to see Neil Young recently, as I reported below. That, and The Rolling Stones at Angel's (Edison) Stadium made up in quality what I've missed in quantity lately.

Rodger advised that Little Feat will be playing at Cerritos Center soon, and I would like to see the reorganized Feats.

Collector, are you listening?

Bonnie Bramlett's daughter is the Feat's lead singer now, and she brings a vocal sound somewhere between Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. Definitely some blues in her background. Speaking of background, her mother used to sing that with Leon Russell.

I remember talking with Bonnie, backstage at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, back in the '70s. I wonder, how old is the daughter now?

Poogie: Thu Jul 31, 03 at 11:07:48 PM (EDT) - Hey Tiki!

Good news! I'm moving. Got me a bitchin' little house in Burbank! I am soooo ready to leave this place. You have no idea how ready I am. And the best part...I can have my own washer and dryer! :-) I have a little yard and a huge patio. Lemon trees. And it's the same as I pay now! Woo hoo!!!

jakbeni (a.k.a. Rodger): Tue Jul 29, 03 at 03:29:44 AM (EDT) - Same old Rodger

Been a while since I stopped in. By the way, a belated happy B'day to Thomas. Still busy going to concerts on a regular basis. Last Thursday, seen Guster at the Henry Fonda Theater. I was expecting another mundane Adult Alternative band based on a post someone put in the old YR butn was pleasantly surprised when they put on a terrific show. My favorite member of the band was the bearded, short brown haired guy who played bongos (very impressive set of bongos on stage), but all the guys in the band were quite good musicians.

Seen Dave Mathews Saturday night at the Home Depot Center (in Carson). He was great, but the venue sucked since they were trying to do live music in a stadium that was built for soccer games. Probably be a great place to see a soccer match, but it sucked for music.

This weekend, Thursday going to House of Blues-Disney to see the Reverend Horton Heat. Warming up for him will be Throw Rag and Southern Culture on the Skids. Friday, going to the other HOB on Sunset Strip to see Ted Nugent and Alice Cooper (Alice is more of a driver to get me to go out than Ted). Saturday, I will see Roxy Music at the OC fair. And Sunday, I will see Heart at the Greek Theater. The next weekend I will see the Mother jones Band on Friday (their style is very similar to the Grateful Deat), Bonnie Raitt on Saturday, and on Sunday will see Kansas with Paul Rodgers (fromer lead singer for Free and Bad Company). So I'm still keeping myself busy.

Also looking forward to San Diego's Street Scene in September. Already got my room reserved at the Downtown San Diego Motel 6 for only $60/night. Check out the Street Scene web site. All sorts of great music coming to SD on that weekend.

Dr. Singer & I ventured to the Greek for Tuesday's opening night of Neil's Greendale. I can't recall if I've ever seen Neil in concert before (certainly not in the past 25 years...but maybe (probably) before that)...I wasn't sure what to expect, except that I'd caught a long glimpse on neilyoung.com of the acoustic version he'd done in Dublin, Ireland. That glimpse made me say "I wanna go!". I wasn't disappointed. At all. In fact, for me, I enjoyed Greendale (and all its unusual spectacle) more than the hour-plus encores of "old Young". I kinda felt like he (and Crazy Horse) were trying too hard during the encores. Like he was trying to make ammends for making fans sit through his "folk novel". I don't think he needed to make ammends for anything. Greendale IS "old Young"...in 2003! Bless him for doing different stuff and reinventing himself, time & time again. This time he even got his wife & kids in the act. We're going again, when he comes to Irvine Meadows (it's not called that anymore is it?) in September. And I'll buy the CD because it's coming in combo with a DVD. Hey, hey, my, my...

Neil Young and Crazy Horse performed this week at the Greek Theater in Hollywood. Neil is one of the original "protest singers," from way back in Buffalo Springfield. He's still protesting, this year in a very clever musical stage production, complete with mimes and dancers. It's called "Greendale," the songs from which will be released in a CD later, maybe in September.

Neil does the voices for all of the Green family, from Grandpa to Sun Green, the adolescent granddaughter who represents the next generation for whom we must save the planet. The dancers perform on a raised platform behind the band, accompanied by pop-art popups of things like automobiles, along with projected moving backgrounds. It's a nice effect. On stage right behind the band is the jail cell where Jed Green spends some time.

The Greens suffer from an overzealous media, represented by cameramen "filming" newstalkers in the middle of the dancers, prompting Grandpa to say that "...the only good things on TV is programs like "Leave It To Beaver."

There's also the scourge of big business, so Sun Green chains herself to the corporate logo as the dancers march to protest.

Added to this Mayberry pie is a memorial for a slain police officer (that man with a gun over there?), and a grand finale with everyone on stage, dancing, including the late Grandpa.

After the saga of Greendale, Neil and the band came back to perform a few of their oldtime hits, including "Like a Hurricane," which finished the show.

It was good.

Just joshin' ya. I know you deserve a shiny new G5. I think that is very cool. I look forward to hearing how it runs. Maybe you'll let me come down gaze upon its and touch it? ;-)

In Quark news, I sent them an email last week and they finally responded. They are in the process of setting up a licensing program for those that want to also put it on their laptops. There will be a fee, of course (This is Quark we're talking about, afterall).

Tiki: Fri Jul 25, 03 at 09:47:50 PM (EDT) - Poogie

LMAO... But really.. This will be my first ever brand new Mac for me... The G4 Silver went to Diane.. The Pismo ... well it's a PowerBook (I use it everyday) but it was bought for Diane...

My whole life (insert "violin music" here) has always been hand me downs or eBay used... You must, by now, see that this very humble (Me) geek deserves to reach the top of the mountain. To say "I have seen perfection and it sits on my desk!" ;)

ACK! I have to wait for my Dual 2GHz G5

Looks like I jumped the gun on that one. Apple is only shipping the lower end (I really thought they might have their act together by now). My guy at MacW said late August. ;( So I am 800 something on the back order list...

Oh well, it will be worth the wait!

Thomas More: Fri Jul 25, 03 at 01:16:28 AM (EDT) - Histerical Perspective

Tiki; there were folks who thought just as you do, back in 1939, after Hitler invaded Poland. They figured, hey, we got millions still out of work in the great depression. Why should we get involved in Europe's wars?

You'd think we might have learned that lesson back in 1917, but no, only 20 years later we had to learn it all over again.

Late in 1941 we found that we would have to get involved, since France had fallen, Hitler was getting ready to invade the British Isles and the Japanese struck at Pearl Harbor.

Well, that was 62 years ago, and there aren't many still around who remember that far back. However, much more recently thousands of Americans were killed in the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. The war against us by terrorist organizations and countries that support them is real, as real as any war we've ever had to fight in order to preserve our freedom, our way of life.

On the other hand, I don't support the erosion of our liberties by The Patriot Act, or for that matter, any legislation that impinges on our personal freedom, except to provide public safety, of course.

Speaking of politics, be sure to notify President Bush that you will be very unhappy if he vetos a bill to reverse recent FCC rule changes allowing more radio and TV stations to be owned by the same corporation, in the same metropolitan area. This rule change represents a dangerous concentration of media ownership, for freedom's sake, and promotion of "cookie-cutter" playlists and TV programming.

Our legislators in The House of Representatives recently passed a bill to reverse the rule-change, and the White House has said that President Bush may veto it. You can email him if you wish to let him know how you feel about a single corporation owning all the radio and/or TV stations in your area. Here's G. W.'s email address, for your convenience: president@whitehouse.gov

All 6 PCI slots in tje Tiki Beast (9600 G3) are in use... But we shall see.. Looks like I can trade up my ignitor board for the PCI-X version for $400 USA , but I do need my SCSI Cheeter's screaming meanies... Oh well... Buying it now, so I can play... Forgot to add, I can't run Micorosoft office on both at the same time. But it is legal for me to install and run the software on both, as long as it is not concurrent.

Poogie: Thu Jul 24, 03 at 12:06:07 PM (EDT) - Judi

There should be a box checked next to the resolutions. Uncheck the box and it will un-gray the resolutions. Then you can choose. I have my work monitor at 1280 x 1024, but at home my monitor is 1024 x 768. I put my resolutio on 800 x 600 to see how big it got. Holy cow, that's big!!!

Larry: I think we concurred. I said, "The higher the resolution, the smaller your display items, including the menu bar. " I don't know. The English language was never my strong suit. ;-) Also, I checked my Microsoft Office X licensing agreement, and it states, " You may make a second copy of the software product and install it on a portable device for the exclusive use of the the person who is the primary user of the first copy."

It is legal for me to use it on my laptop as well as my desktop. Too bad Quark doensn't see it that way.

Judi: Thu Jul 24, 03 at 08:51:49 AM (EDT) - screen resolution

In my display window most of the choices are grayed out and all I have to choose from are 800x600x56hz or 800x600x60 hz which is the default setting I am using now. There are lots of other choices but can I select something that is grayed? The monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 763MB. Give me a few sample resolutions I could try on a

lsinger9404@cox.net

JUDI: I re-read Poogie's post. Instead of concurring, I actually dissent. If the fonts are too big, the resolution is too low. Go to a higher setting, rather than a lower one. This will shrink them.

Shrink as in make them smaller, not "shrink" as in what I am.

Dr. Larry Singer: Thu Jul 24, 03 at 01:40:35 AM (EDT) - stuff
lsinger9404@cox.net

Poogie - Microshaft Office didn't used to let you install on two computers. I used to have to run back and forth (well, o.k...wheel back and forth) between lap and desk top if I was working on something on both computers. Shut off Office Notifications on the lap if I wanted to run word on the desk, and do the same to the desk if i wanted to run Word on the lap. With the latest version they removed that and allow you to have it installed and running at the same time on multiple computers. Mabye Quark will one day do this???

Judi- I concur with Poogie...check the "Displays" Preferences panel and make sure it is at the max resolution your screen will allow.

Mac fans: By hook or by crook, get ahold of a copy (any copy, as long as it's legal, and not an Upgrade or LE version) of Premiere. Send disk 1 to Apple and you get a free copy of Final Cut Express.

Poogie: Thu Jul 24, 03 at 01:35:09 AM (EDT) - Error

Make that...license. Oops.

Also, New Quark only backwards compatible with 5. Boo hiss!!!

Poogie: Thu Jul 24, 03 at 12:43:28 AM (EDT) - Tiki-Quark

New Quark SUCKS! It has an internet activation, so I cannot install it on my laptop. I am sooooo pissed. In order to use it on my laptop, I must pay for a second licensce! Even Microsoft Office lets you install it on two computers in your network. Not happy at all.

poogie: Wed Jul 23, 03 at 10:32:04 PM (EDT) - Tiki, you rascal!!!

I am so jealous! I am planning on the G5 next year. I just did a complete upgrade to my computer a year ago, so I think I'll wait a bit.

Poogie: Wed Jul 23, 03 at 10:29:43 PM (EDT) - Judi

Judi: I think your problem is your display resolution. The higher the resolution, the smaller your display items, including the menu bar. The lower the resolution, the larger the items will be. Lower your resolution to the next lowest setting and see if that helps.

Tiki, it's about time! You will not regret it. I just installed the new Quark 6 tonight. Sometime in the next month, I will be dumping 9 off of my tower and my TiBook. It will be quite the project, but I can't wait to get rid of it. Also have been using the new Acrobat 6. Very nice.

All OSX users: Get yourself a copy of cocktail (it's free). This is one nifty OS x utility. It will run cron scripts, pre-bind files, repair permissions and so much more. Like the Swiss Army Knife of utilities. Pre-binding is especially important after installing/updating software. Running the cron scripts regularly and repairing permissions on occasion will help speed up your system. There are many other goodies, as well. Need to sit down with it and see what else it will do.

Ok all you OSX experts... Maybe my husband is messing around with the font sizes when I'm not looking, and yes my eyesight is not all that good so the large sized type is helpful but the font size in my menubar is colossal! The 9 words take up the entire screen width, and I just upgraded the monitor to a whopping big 14". Where oh where is the control panel to make that font up there smaller? I found the one for the icon size and type size for the names of the folders on the desktop but in my web browser stuff is huge and that menu bar is bugging me.
