Sandy: Mon Jul 21, 03 at 09:08:06 PM (EDT) - Anyone for a steambath?

Sheesh, we've got East Coast weather on the West Coast, whassup with that? This humidity is messing with my hair and my usually calm disposition... getting cranky, here! Our last week was spent in Reno for business, where it was 95F but nice and dry. Lost $12 all week, and saw more old folks perched in front of slot machines, than is healthy. I'd rather spend our retirement $$ in the sunlight. Maybe golf? We stayed at the Nugget, which is one of the nicer places if you gotta be in Reno/Sparks. Our room had a lovely view of their renovated Victorian district..... complete with a vintage-themed Pawnshop, open 24 hrs. Only in NV.!!!!!

Tiki: Sun Jul 20, 03 at 06:26:52 PM (EDT) - Howzit Thomas!

Bouncing back from a wonderful 3 day weekend in Encinitas. I wish I could have stayed a tad bit longer...

This time we stayed at the Best Western above Moonlight Beach. Folks, this place is kewl. Fantastic rates, a block above Downtown Encinitas!

Sharing the same property is Tomiko, a very laid back Japanese Resturant and Bar. The food is top notch and the bar is a treat. It really is amazing to have such a place in your backyard — yet it feels like you are a million miles away from reality...

Thomas More: Sat Jul 19, 03 at 05:33:24 PM (EDT) - Thanks, Tiki

...for the birthday wishes. Howdy to akaGeorge and Jamie, and all.

SRF! I thought you were going to bring the pressure of the advertisers to bear on the local radio station operators. What? There's no more local radio stations? Only Clear Channel? Guess I'd better save up for an FX receiver.

Oh, well, there's still blues on the radio, on weekends anyway. 2:00 to 7:00 PM with a real bluesman at the console. It's Doug MacLeod and "Nothing But the Blues."

In fact, it's on the internet right now, if you're not close to a radio receiver. Just click on this link and strap on your headset!

Enjoy!

SRF: Sat Jul 19, 03 at 01:43:52 PM (EDT) - RTE sighting @ 9:00 high

Yes saw Mr Sechman going northbound on State College Blvd late Fri afternoon heading for his gig @ The Renaissance Cafe in Brea (great food there, I go to lunch there every once in a while) Told him me & WOSRF will try to make it some night when he is entertaining the diners there. SoCal radio still stinks

The Exterminator: Fri Jul 18, 03 at 04:06:15 PM (EDT) - The Blazers
phelan@jsei.ucla.edu

Any of you fans of the Blazers?

They are old compatriots of Los Lobos. I've seen 'em a few times and think they're great. Anyways, I think they are playing free at the California Plaza in Downtown LA Saturday 7/19, if any of y'all are interested. Check here: http://www.grandperformances.org/program.php

Also Saturday, I think I See Hawks in LA is playing at the Taix Lounge (in Silver Lake?). If you like country music, you'll like them. I think this one is also free.

Jamie: thanks for the surf music link.

Judi: Thu Jul 17, 03 at 07:57:17 PM (EDT) - success!

Today was moving day for my mother, she is all moved in with the few items she is allowed to have at a new assisted living facility 1/2 mile from my home. (scary thought) She seemed to take the move well, we even found time to celebrate Dad's birthday with him at the nursing home. Thomas hope you enjoyed your day and the Blues as much as my dad enjoyed his lobster and cake.

Tiki: Thu Jul 17, 03 at 05:40:42 PM (EDT) - Thomas More

Happy Birthday!!!!

akageorge: Thu Jul 17, 03 at 02:57:08 AM (EDT) - And on a personal note ...

Hi, Jamie, yerself! I was thinking about you the other day, when one of my girlfriends was talking about learning to surf (she never has). I ought to send her out your way. She might go to CA with me next spring. BTW, my sister & the fam loved Pirates. I might blow one of my free tix on it.

akageorge: Thu Jul 17, 03 at 02:52:51 AM (EDT) - More CA carnage -- checking in on y'all

I trust no Rumours were up in Santa Monica yesterday. Dang, what a mess. I hope all you and yours are fine. Here we have high summer -- and the A/C went out at work, which means it's finally warm enough for me in here! (I dress for the weather; they dress for winter, I think.) My Saturn lease just ended, and I got an eggplant purple 2000 Dodge Neon ES. After six days of driving, I still love it. And it's so PURPLE! It has A/C, CD, PW/PM/PL ... etc. My garden is finally growing, I'm ratsitting for my nephews who are away at camp, I ran over a rattlesnake (well, I tried to -- I don't think I got it) last week (after taking several fine portraits of it) and my neighbor killed one in her flower garden this week, and I head to Falcon Ridge Folk Festival next week. There's my life in a nutshell. (Nut being the operative word, in my case.)

Poogie: Mon Jul 14, 03 at 10:25:41 PM (EDT) - Tiki

Haven't the foggiest how the good doctor is. We didn't speak. ;-) He was even next to me at the baggage carousel. I was too immersed in my iPod!

Tiki: Mon Jul 14, 03 at 09:53:44 PM (EDT) - Poogie

Hmmm, thats a tough one. As you know... every doctor is my fave! So how is the good doctor?

Judi: Mon Jul 14, 03 at 03:40:13 PM (EDT) - Poogie

Thanks, I might take you up on that offer, I will get back to you in a week. We are cutting through the last of the red tape to get my folks moved. Perhaps this weekend it will all be over and my life can return to normal. (or wishful thinking)

Thomas, you and my dad share a birthdate. He is getting a lobster feed for his and you get the blues! Happy Early Birthday!

Speaking of music, you missed the North Atlantic Blues festival this weekend in Rockland Maine, and the Moxie festival! I did manage to attend a free concert at L.L.Bean to hear Don McLean however.

Thomas More: Mon Jul 14, 03 at 01:42:55 AM (EDT) - My Birthday Blues
rdamor@pacbell.net

On Thursday, July 17th, I will be celebrating my birthday at a FREE concert featuring The Melvin Eddy Blues Band. Y'all are welcome to join me!

This is happening at Irvine Regional Park, at the north end of Jamboree Road, just north of Chapman Ave. The music starts at 6:00 PM, so don't be late!

Melvin Eddy is one of the original post-war Chicago (electric) blues singers, in the tradition of Muddy Waters, Charlie Musselwhite and Luther Allison. He also has two fine blues guitarists in his band. The park will be rockin'!

Poogie: Mon Jul 14, 03 at 01:35:39 AM (EDT) - Judi
poogie@earthlink.net

I happen to have an extra USB hub in my junk...er...cable drawer. I was contemplating throwing it out because I'm in that throwing-out kind of mood. I have no need for it, as I already have one. If you would like to give it a good home and save it from the trash heap, email me and I'll send it off. I believe it has 4 ports. It's small (to be used w/ a laptop), but I used it with my regular computer and it worked fine.

Tiki: OS X Queen? I don't know about that. Well, ok. I am ! ;-) You will never guess in a million years, who was on the flight with me from Chicago to LA. Wanna hint? He's a doctor. Another hint? Not your favorite doctor. Know who it is...?0

Jamie: Sat Jul 12, 03 at 10:50:22 PM (EDT) - and ohmigawd i forgot....

Tiki: Sat Jul 12, 03 at 09:13:12 PM (EDT) - Judi

(((VBS))) But I want it all now!

Hmmmm, why am I hearing the ompa lumpa song in my head?

Judi: Sat Jul 12, 03 at 03:24:36 PM (EDT) - Tiki

Sorry Tiki, if it isn't free, I don't use it, for the most part. HD tools and drivers all work, and after all I'm a recreational computer user. I send a few emails, I read my local paper online, I check out CNN because I don't have cable tv. I lurk and occasionally post at a few message boards. I look up a recipe or information on Google here and there. Maybe 4 times a year I do something remotely considered desktop publishing. I don't need a high end computer or fancy stuff to go along with it, I only have those things because my kids bought them for us or a relative gave me scads of cash to spend and that is all I wanted. My wants and needs are few these days. When you get to be my age you too will understand. But I do like OSX, gives me an opportunity to learn something new. I have left over Birthday money to spend and will get speakers and the USB hub. I don't do EBay, it is too overwhelming for me. MacConnection or wharehouse are just fine, they know where I live. Thanks!

Tiki: Fri Jul 11, 03 at 10:51:44 PM (EDT) - My last thoughts on this..

OS X looks very kewl. I have played with it a bit. But bottom line, and AFAIK, we folks in the graphics world are going to stick with OS 9 until EVERY issue is hashed out. I love UNIX, use it every day... I love my 9600s G3s... I like Diane’s G4... I like the direction Apple is going. But until every 3rd party vendor jumps through the hoops... every Print Shop jumps into the ring of fire... WE WILL stay as aa OS 9 Shop.

Tiki: Fri Jul 11, 03 at 10:40:17 PM (EDT) - Judi

Are we still using free (you get what you pay for) HD tools and drivers?

If I recall, we once went over this 2 or 3 years ago

You need to get this: Intech ... Bar none, this stuff is solid! LOL, One of these days I will have to add up the $’s I have spent for my Seagate Ultra SCSI drives, SCSI PCI cards, Raid, ect... That I have spent over the years... They would be toast, if not for Intech... And now they support the IDE - ATA Drives... Not bad at $60 per license...

Tiki: Fri Jul 11, 03 at 10:00:48 PM (EDT) - Judi

You can pick up a 4 port usb hub from MacWarehouse for around $40. I myself would jump to eBay and take a looksee...

Hmmm, I do like those HK sound sticks, but I do believe kyle got a great deal on his speakers... 2 speakers and a sub... I thought they were nifty when he cranked them up to 11, for me, at his shop.

Hey kyle... Judi needs help!

Judi: Wed Jul 9, 03 at 04:11:27 PM (EDT) - onna roll

Successfully downloaded Netscape for Mac OSX. However it found some old version of my bookmarks somewhere on my hard drive and used those after I had spent a full day tweaking a new bookmark list and getting it just the way I liked it. Now off to hunt down the good list, find a way to delete this old mess and work on the next problem. I thought computers were suppose to make life easier? And my ISP deleted my entire web page and directory when they updated, I had all the files saved on the computer but now I no longer can FTP the files back as I get error messages galore. Even their tech support was no help. Not that I actually had a web site of any merit, but still I liked to have a place to upload images of the winter snow in my yard, or the flock of turkeys attempting to get in my garden so I could show ya all.

Update: my folks move to assisted living is pending, might possibly happen this weekend. Can't be soon enough. My dad is a saint and my mother is Satan.

Zoetrope: Tue Jul 8, 03 at 09:32:22 PM (EDT) - Shaun Mason

Yup...same guy.

The Exterminator: Tue Jul 8, 03 at 04:09:20 PM (EDT) - Shaun Mason
phelan@jsei.ucla.edu

Say,

Is anyone still in contact with Shaun Mason?

I saw a letter from someone of that name in the Weekly the other day and wondered if it was the same guy.

BTW: if anyone is on the Eastside of LA, here's a show with a couple of bands I think are great (Slacktone and 00 Spy Car):

Judi: Tue Jul 8, 03 at 03:39:31 PM (EDT) - Mac question of the day

With this new monitor I no longer have built in speakers and the sound now comes from inside my G4 sounding like it comes from a tin can. Not needing the best quality or costliest speakers what would you suggest?

USB Hub, a good idea? I have 2 USB slots and need 4 so I don't have to keep swapping things. Suggestions on what to get and where?

as always, "The check is in the mail"

Judi: Mon Jul 7, 03 at 06:36:27 PM (EDT) - nope

It was the version on my computer before I updated it to OSX. I'm guessing you are telling me I need to download the OSX specific version of Netscape. That is what I figured. 99% of everything I use on the compter is freeware so it won't be a problem. Thanks!

watch for that check..... (ha!)

Tiki: Mon Jul 7, 03 at 06:22:13 PM (EDT) - Judi

Do you have netscape 7.02 for OSX?

Hmmmm, Poogie is on vacation... But maybe she will take bounce into the room... LOL... She is the OSX Godess!

Judi: Mon Jul 7, 03 at 05:57:53 PM (EDT) - Mac OSX advice?

I finally installed X on the G4 desktop machine after I felt I knew my way around the new stuff on the iBook. I had a bit of a problem finding my Netscape bookmarks but managed to at last. However now when I launch netscape 7.02 it opens in Classic Mode. I want to get away from all things classic and have no idea why it opens Classic for a modern version of Netscape. No I have not installed Safari on this machine yet. I use it on the iBook however. IE opens fine under X but I don't want to use IE!

And second question, my digital camera stores images on a floppy disk, I have a USB floppy drive that works fine under X however I no longer have the "Erase disk" option that I need to clear the disk after downloading images. How to erase the disks?

...and thanks for your help. The check is in the mail.

Ummm, what do you think? ...

Thorens --- Edited -- This link is dead ----

LOL... Why in the heck would I ever spend $300 to fix the Luxman, when I could spend the same for this gem...

Hmmm, Your boxes sound sweet, could I cram a pair of "Voice Of America" Horns in them?
