Thomas More: Sun Jun 15, 03 at 04:52:51 PM (EDT) - The Written Word...

is mightier than the loudest voice. Somebody said that.

Thank you, Dr.Larry Singer, for joining us, however briefly, at The Bluewater Grill last Thursday. Hopefully, when you come again, you'll be joined by your lovely wife.

Just read a review of Neil Young and Crazy Horse, who opened their Summer tour with an engagement in West Palm Beach, Florida. Apparently this is a stage version of their new concept CD, "Greendale," which is a sort of rock opera, with live actors on a set which takes up about half the stage. Fans were disappointed not hearing "Southern Man" or "Rockin' the Free World."

The CD & DVD won't be released until August, so none of the group's new songs were familiar to the audience.

I have tx for the July 25 show at The Greek Theater. Larry&Tea; There are also shows on July 23rd and 24th, and you can still get tx!

Hmmm...tea's right here in the room with me. Why can't I just tell her instead of writing it??

Dr. Larry Singer: Sat Jun 14, 03 at 12:05:33 PM (EDT) - a few things
lsinger9404@cox.net

tea: I don't know where July 25th came from...it's June 24th...and no, you don't have to show me your calendar. But if July 25th is Neil, we'll have to pass on that given your schedule.

KD: "front row" for Daniel Lanois??? That's what you meant, right? The Henry Fonda is festival seating, and they let me in while they were letting the first few people in line. We just went right up to the front.

Thomas More: Fri Jun 13, 03 at 04:17:48 PM (EDT) - Another Journalist Passes

After a long bout with Hepatitis C, Al Ragle, FYI editor-in-chief, died peacefully at 5:00 PM on Sunday, June 8, in Austin, Texas.

Some long-time readers of FYI suspect that Angel, Al’s error-prone intern, finally convinced him to fly with her to a palapa on Isla Mujeres, and it’s also possible that he staked out a small cabin with excellent satellite reception on a trout stream in southern Colorado, but this FYI reader’s money is on Al’s beloved Texas Hill Country, where perhaps he’ll be spotted from time to time cruising the back roads in an old white Chevy pick-up, with a big black dog grinning at him from the passenger’s seat.

A memorial service will be held in Austin on the evening of Wednesday, June 18. For more information please contact nancy3@earthlink.net 512-894-0994 or check Al’s web site at: DoWop.org

Thomas More: Fri Jun 13, 03 at 04:11:04 PM (EDT) - Hi Judi!
rdamor@pacbell.net

Glad to hear your 'rents are on the mend. It's happening to boomers all across the country. Aging parents, that is. WoThomas's father has failing health. Diabetes, and now he requires dialysis two or three times weekly.

He lives in Oregon, but Sunshyne and her sister have convinced him to move to Phoenix, where the sister lives. He still drives and is pretty independent, but home care is going to be required.

My father died in 1981, before he was old enough to fall down and break any bones.

Judi; are you sure there isn't an environmental cause for the brittle bones your parents suffer from? Maybe it's the lobsters?

Judi: Fri Jun 13, 03 at 07:39:15 AM (EDT) - update

Dad and the broken hip: surgery went well and he is in a nursing home for rehab. It is crushingly sad to see him so confused, and so weak but he is making progress and can at least stand up and walk a bit with a walker.

Mom and the fractured pelvis: Her progress is much slower, she prefers to be pushed in a wheelchair and she still has a lot of pain and is severly depressed about dad. I took her to the dr yesterday and some changes in her medication shoud help.

I have applied for them to be moved to assisted living ASAP. Each day I spend a few hrs helping mom, then go visit dad for an hr or so. For a while I had moved in with mom but decided I couldn't be "Superwoman" so now my blood pressure is returning to its normal high state, my stress level has dropped and my husband begins his 10 week summer vacation a week from today. His parents are also falling down needing hospitalization, undergoing eye surgery, a few trips to the emergency room for potential heart attack but try to keep their problems from us by not calling to tell us, but we find out anyway.

The son has returned safe and sound from Morocco, both he and his girlfriend lost luggage at some point in the trip but both had luggage returned eventually.

If the weather would improve just a bit that might help, but it is a lovely damp 58F this morning. Have a great father's day this weekend all of you that are a father or have a father. My dad will get a lobster roll and my undivided attention and I rejoyce in the fact that I STILL have my dad to visit every day.

KD: Fri Jun 13, 03 at 12:39:48 AM (EDT) - Tiki

Ever heard of a UK band called The Cigarettes?

KD: Fri Jun 13, 03 at 12:39:02 AM (EDT) - Instro?

Did Somebody say something about instro music?

Sometimes I think I'm stressed, then I read Judi's posts.

How do you get those front row seats, Dr. Singer?!?

Will meet you at the Bluewater later this month.

np: Trees, Shock of the New

Thomas More: Thu Jun 12, 03 at 06:36:22 PM (EDT) - Tea; July 25 is Neil Young

and Crazy Horse, at The Greek Theater. I don't know about Lou.

Also interesting; The Yardbirds are on the bill later this month at The Coach House. I know Keith Relf won't be the lead singer, and I doubt if Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton will be playing guitars. I wonder who's in the band who can legally claim the name?

So what do y'all think of "resurrected" bands, like The Doors or Little Feat, who are missing their main element? I understand that The (present) Doors offered an excellent performance last year at Universal Amphitheater.

Zoetrope; Glad you found my stent in the archives. I knew I left in in here somewhere. We'd love to see your smiling face at The Bluewater Grill one of these Thursday evenings. Some of us make it almost every Thursday. Flying Blind is better than ever, having matured from The Canyon Inn days. They perform a very nice set of blues and other inspirational songs, with only guitar/harmonica, keyboards and acoustic (stand-up) bass. No drums; this is a dinner-hour gig.

It's only from 6:00 'til 9:00 PM, so don't be late!

tea (aka Mrs. Dr.): Thu Jun 12, 03 at 10:27:28 AM (EDT) - David Brinkley RIP

Good night Chet, good night David.

Zoetrope: Thu Jun 12, 03 at 02:25:11 AM (EDT) - Hi Thomas

It took me a while to get through the archives and find your stent. I'm very glad that you are ok.

Tiki: Wed Jun 11, 03 at 11:10:56 PM (EDT) - Space Cossacks

Great Band... Bought their 2nd CD... But AFAICT... They are no more... Their web site has not been updated in years. I have not been to Go-Boys for a while, but I doubt that a 3rd CD was ever produced. Oh well... You are right Thomas.. that was a great show... Jon and the Nightriders rocked!

tea (aka Mrs.Dr.): Wed Jun 11, 03 at 12:17:22 AM (EDT) - Lar

Will I be going to see Lou without you? I have June 24th on my calendar, not July 25th...I'll be in finals end of July.

Thomas, I'm swamped with schoolwork the next 6 weeks, so I am unable to get a hall pass for this week. Bummer. Maybe another time.

Thomas More: Mon Jun 9, 03 at 12:33:33 AM (EDT) - Hi Ho Larry!

Would Dr. and Mrs. Singer like to try once more to hook up with me and WoThomas at The Bluewater Grill this Thursday (June 12), where "Flying Blind" (the world's largest three-piece band) will be performing?

On the following Thursday, June 19, I will have to forgo the $2 fish tacos and $3 shrimp cocktails they serve at The Bluewater Grill for Happy Hour ('til 6:30). There's another band playing locally that night which I plan to see, called "Dubious Newman." Not sure of the venue, but I'll post it when I know.

Thomas More: Mon Jun 9, 03 at 12:26:06 AM (EDT) - Exterminator and Zoetrope in the Room?

Exterminator is still studying biological things at UCLA (my old school!), and no doubt Zoetrope still colors on the screen. Will wonders never cease?

Thomas More: Mon Jun 9, 03 at 12:21:57 AM (EDT) - Surf's up?

Hi Jamie, Tiki, all you surfers and hodads too;

Who's playing bass for Slacktone these days? They're my son Alex's fav surf band, as you remember from a night long ago in Hermosa Beach, at The Pitcher House. What ever happened to the Space Cossacks? They were hot.

Jamie: Sat Jun 7, 03 at 10:22:55 PM (EDT) - summer? (where?)

o the gloom! get thee hence!

Tiki....and others so inclined...you can always check my Mach Turtle gig page for any live surf and instro show happening in the entire state of CA. i update it as soon as i hear of somethin': http://www.machturtleprods.com/mach4.html

The Eliminators have been on "hiatus" and are only doing a few shows. likewise the Torquays. you might want to come down to the Baja Cantina for the Surf Kings on June 14th (a Saturday)....3 sets. you'll never get to see that much of them anywhere. and of course, Slacktone at the Cantina on June 25th, part of the regular Weds. surf series. check my website for details.

Zoetrope!! :-) yes, it is now the white room....with black curtains ;-)

Dr. Larry Singer: Sat Jun 7, 03 at 02:29:36 AM (EDT) - Whatta week!
lsinger9404@cox.net

Hey guys...just had to come over and brag about my rockin' week. 5 started it on Friday with the Love show at UCLA. They played the full "Forever Changes" and then some. It was a great show, but Arthur Lee was heavily medicated (cutting it with alcohol). I managed to get backstage (i've corresponded with the guitarist). Arthur Lee snuck out, but I got all the band's signatures. I saw Rodney on the ROQ fvor a brief second. Of all people, Bruce Gary (drummer for The Knack) was there. I had met him at Liverpool Days a few months back. Turns out he not only played for Love in the 70's, but he's played for many other well respected musicians, and is the resident expert on Hendrix. Check him out at BruceGary.com.

Then, on Monday, 5 not only got to see Pearl Jam, but I was the closest person to them the whole evening sitting on the stage. Check out some pix at here. I know PJ's guitar tech and he got me in. He did the same for Heart when they played the OC Fair last year.

Then, last night saw mega-producer/singer-songriter Daniel Lanois. at Henry Fonda. I had met him at Amoeba weeks ago, and he acknowledged me as he was walking by in the hall before the show. While I was in the "front row", the security guy let me go behind the curtain, essentially backstage. It was the best seat in the house! I went with connie of Zoey's Trip and we had a blast.Daniel announced that he was going to bring out an old friend he's known and worked with for 20 years....The Edge!! They did 3 songs together. It was amazing! Then he brought out Marianne Faithfull for a song. Incredible evening. If you ever get a chance to see him....don't pass it up!

Oh...let me noit forget that I met my idol, Lou Reed. see the pix at: Lou Reed. He invited me to go backstage for his Wiltern show. T & I are set foir the 25th of July!

See you all later!

The Exterminator: Thu Jun 5, 03 at 11:56:18 PM (EDT) - 00 Spy Car
phelan@jsei.ucla.edu

Jamie: There was at least one other person dancing: lots of curly hair, once known as Mistress X.

Were you hanging with the guy from the Insect Surfers? Otherwise I don't remember you off hand.

Anyone who likes instumental stuff and is interested in hearing something completely different: Spy Car are a very talented and unique band who play a mix of stuff that includes influences from surf, country, dub, jazz, Hawaiian. 2 guitars (one is sometimes a lap steel), bass, drums, no vocals. Not like anything you've ever heard.

Tiki: Thu Jun 5, 03 at 09:57:02 PM (EDT) - Unofficial Dynaco Home Page

That would be here

Thomas More: Thu Jun 5, 03 at 06:15:34 PM (EDT) - Welcome old timers...

Young old-time YR fellows, that is. Based on his erudite and interesting posts, I figured Exterminator for an old guy, but when we finally met at one of those KSCA Trubador happenings, he was just a youngster!

Would that be HB Bob? Long time no hear, dude!

Note that the women's pro sand volleyball tournement will begin this weekend (starting tomorrow, June 6!) in Hermosa Beach, and next weekend they're in San Diego. They will perform (compete?) in Huntington Beach August 14 - 17.

It is my sad duty to inform you of the passing of an icon of audio engineering, Mr. David Hafler.

It was reported that Mr. Hafler died on May 25, 2003 in Philadelphia after a prolonged and debilitating illness.

Mr. Hafler's vision and hard work produced a series of unparalleled stereo components, and a community of people who truly believed in the ethic of economical, high-quality stereo components.

His concept of component kits which could be assembled by amateurs and at lower cost were equal to the best components available. These units, produced in the 1970s, still enjoy a high reputation today among hi-fi enthusiasts.

Read the Philadelphia Inquirer obituary here.

Thomas More: Mon Jun 2, 03 at 02:42:28 PM (EDT) - Save the Surf!

Hi Jamie! Good to hear from you! Although we're on opposite sides of most political fences, I love you for your concern regarding the ecosystem, and for your efforts to bring surf music up from the beach.

Now, here's a cute and timely French joke:

An American, a Dutchman and a Frenchman were working on a construction project in a middle-eastern country. Having completed the project on time, they received a bonus, and they set out to celebrate.

One had a bottle of Cognac, which they drank as they headed out for dinner, since there were no bars in the country, and no liquor stores, either. Possession of alcohol was a criminal offense, and when they were caught, they were sentenced to death!

However, it was the Sheik's first wife's birthday, and he decided to spare the lives of the three infidels, as a birthday gift. Nevertheless, they were to be flogged, 20 lashes each, and the Sheik also granted each of them one request before they were punished.

First up was the Dutchman, who was smart enough to request that a pillow be strapped to his back before the flogging. That helped for the first 10 lashes, but after that the pillow was shredded, and the poor fellow was carried away, bleeding.

Next up was the Frenchman, who requested that two pillows be strapped to his back before the whipping. These softened the blows for 15 lashes, but the last five hurt, and the Frenchman was dragged away, whimpering as only a Frenchman can.

Then the American was brought up. The Sheik said, "I admire many things about America, and therefore I'm granting you two requests before you are punished."

So the American said, "First, I want to say that I don't think the punishment is fair. I request that I receive 100 lashes for such a terrible crime."

"I'm impressed with your courage," said the Sheik. "And what is your second request?"

"I'd like the Frenchman strapped to my back," he replied.
