SRF: Fri Apr 30, 04 at 12:25:38 PM (EDT) - Another legend is about to bite the dust [:>(}
From the RAIN website --- BUMMER!!!!
BY PAUL MALONEY
Fans of legendary Oxford, OH's WOXY-FM were already braced for the station's imminent sale and resultant change of format on the broadcast signal, yet consoled by the station's promise to continue its alternative rock format online. But unless a last-minute investment deal materializes, 97X says the stream will end when the broadcast does, not later than May 13th.
According to the station's website, "Over the past three months we've been looking for sponsors or investors who could help us fund this very expensive venture into the future. We've talked with many, many potential partners, but as of now, it's not looking good. There are still some active conversations, but every day that goes by makes it less and less likely that we will find a funder."
WOXY says the cost of bandwidth and sound recording copyright royalties -- two expenses a non-streaming broadcast wouldn't face -- are prohibitively high for the station to continue online.
"We wanted to communicate directly and honestly with our audience about this situation," Doug Balogh, who owns the station along with his wife Linda, told RAIN today.
"With our online audience approaching 50,000 unique listeners and growing every month, the already substantial costs continue to rise with no significant revenue stream to pay for them," according to the web site.
The station has long been highly regarded by music fans for its more "pure," less homogenized form of alternative rock, and for being one of the last remaining independently-owned broadcasters in or near a major market (the station can be heard in the Cincinnati metro). In January the Balogh's announced the sale of the station to First Broadcasting Investment Partners for $5.6 million (see RAIN coverage here).
At that time, the plan was to continue the station's format online, with live jocks weekdays from 9am to 9pm.
But as the financial picture became clearer to Balogh and the station, 97X fans were notified that the outlook did not look good to even continue solely on the Internet. The station's message boards are filled listeners bemoaning the idea of losing the station, and suggesting ideas to keep the programming afloat.
But the station says even "reasonably-priced subscriptions would not create enough revenue to cover the costs of creating and delivering 97X," and that "as a commercial business, it would be improper for us to accept listener donations."
Balogh told RAIN that he's not interested in scaling down the station to a one- or two-employee, online "jukebox," just to keep the brand alive.
"We've always envisioned continuing to do radio like it's always been done, with live jocks taking requests," he said. He says if they were to do a "hybrid" Internet version that simply used the 97X brand, it wouldn't be the same service WOXY listeners have loved.
Still, Balogh's upbeat, and says "the end" may not be forever. He thinks "real" radio -- with a staff of knowledgeable air talent, offering an array of services to the listener -- has a future online. "This is where it's going... we really believe that."

Neen, your Julan is adorable! I especially love the ones where he's laughing and (kosher) hamming for the camera! What a dolly! But I took the liberty of browsing your sister's wedding pictures. A donut wedding cake! I called Larry over to look, and he said, "it's just like what you wanted" (except I really wanted a Cinnabon wedding cake, not donuts, but he knew right away!). What a hoot.

Are you saying that no one puts down LA in OC? What about San Diego?
Yes that is what I am saying.... Actually no one talks about it or cares that someone is from LA ... I just haven't seen that.... My daughter lived in San Diego for a few years and had the same experience. She hangs with an Orange County native friend who has lived in LA (Palms area near Sepulveda and Venice), moved back home to her parents in OC and now is back living in Hollywood. Highland and Cherokee???Lankershim and Oxnard?? LOL!!! Few in Orange County know or care where those streets are except they probably know that Lankershim is the exit for Universal Studios.... Sorry if that breaks the stereotypical Orange County-ite. Orange County residents might as well be on an island unless they work in LA and live in OC but those numbers are dwindling as traffic increases. We don't spend much time thinking about LA even if we listen to LA radio stations... but we don't look our noses down at LA either unless we live in Coto de Caza or Newport Beach. As for me, I don't get around all that much [:^D}, but I dig the Getty Museum, Venice Beach, Topanga Canyon, Fishermans Village in Marina del Rey, Farmers Market, Al's Bar, Henry Fonda Theater, Japanese Village/Japanese-American Museum, Canon Theater (OK I know that's Beverly Hills), Greek Theater, Hollywood Bowl, Shubert Theater, and Griffith Park to name a few things. And San Pedro is one of the nicest areas within the LA city limits.
Mets fans cram the air waves??!! Huh??? There's more Yankees fans than Mets fans in SoCal that is undeniable. Just wait til the Yankees visit Dodger Stadium in June!! And LA sports talk radio still belongs to the Lakers and the Dodgers even on ESPN Radio 710, the flagship station of the Angels.
tea (aka Mrs. Dr.): Thu Apr 29, 04 at 12:26:03 PM (EDT) - SRF! (He posted at 9:30 pm last night.. maybe he was tired :>)
That must have been it! I didn't think to look at the timestamp. Good eye.
neen: Thu Apr 29, 04 at 05:11:58 AM (EDT) - nyc v. la
no contest -- LA, hands down. i met some nice ppl in brentwood, so yeah, i even like it there.. and you are so right about Western.. I never even thought about it that way.. here are some more of my favorite things:
reservations for dinner
the grand practice of calling ahead to see if a store has what you're looking for -- people simply don't do that here
freeways, not parkways, expressways, thruways, highways, interstates, and fuck-all else kind of roads
and OH SRF, do i know what you're talking about TRAFFIC -- horrendous
however, i hear that Prospect Park is a cool place to be -- here are some pix taken there of my son with his aunt, my sister:
http://www.benandjanine.com/julian
sorry, i never did copy that HTML primer, so I don't know how to link :(
Tiki: Wed Apr 28, 04 at 11:12:12 PM (EDT) - Part 2
Sorry for the ramble.. Prolly due to too much sports radio talk. Every time the Mets show up in LA... The Mets fan cram the air-waves and start their jaws...
neen, it is not that I think that the west side or Santa Monica is not Los Angeles, but it seems (to me) that they want no part of Los Angeles. Just my observation. I feel more at home in El Segundo than I do in say Brentwood. Not my style.
SRF, Hmmmm... But why diss the rest of Southern California Bounce into OC... or San Diego... tell them you are from (hmmmm, lets pick Hollywood, say Highland and Cherokee) Hollywood. Or better yet North Hollywood (Lankershim and Oxnard)... Are you sying that no one puts down LA in OC? What about San Diego?
To me, the heart of Los Anngeles is Western Avenue. Starts in Hollywood, (not a very nice place) and ends in San Pedro. You could spend years walking down Western, learning culture, history, people. If you want to really understand Los Angeles drive up or down Western.
SRF: Wed Apr 28, 04 at 02:29:02 PM (EDT) - forgot
to mention I've been a Californian since 1985.
SRF: Wed Apr 28, 04 at 02:27:15 PM (EDT) - The NYC thingie
I am not and never was a Dodgers' fan, though I admit that I marveled at Kirk Gibson's Game 1 home run in '88. I used to be a Mets fan when I lived in New Jersey. 1969 was a great year. I never was a Yankees fan, tho' I found Reggie Jackson very entertaining and Mickey and Yogi etc. I am and have been an Angels' fan since I moved to "The OC" -- Why in the world does that STUPID show call it that??? ahem--- Orange County. Closest I ever lived to LA COUNTY was La Habra when I first moved to California. Farthest away from OC was when I lived in Corona (a God-awful ugly place) for a 7 month period. I dunno --- I guess I can understand why native Angelinos feel the way they do. But why diss the rest of Southern California??? By doing that you're as bad as a New Yawker!!! I never liked NYC (had to work there for a few years) I hated the commutes around the NY-NJ area. I once saw someone get pushed in front of an arriving subway in NYC. Times Square is the arm-pit of America. Sorry the whole city is a slum these days. Traffic there is worse than SoCal's traffic. I was there a few weeks ago and one of the 2 all-news stations WINS has a bridge and tunnel report every 10 minutes detailing the traffic tie-ups. A week ago Sunday (when I was stuck in a massive traffic jam on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge on my way back to the JFK airport) all the bridge and tunnel crossings had a 40-60 minute wait!! ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON at 3 pm. enough rambling for now.....

it's so funny that you don't think the west side or santa monica are LA -- your loss.. and tho' i disagree with you on the pizza issue (i do like it in nyc), and central park is nice -- the rest of nyc is quite the dump -- overpriced and haughty, or else low-rent and beligerent.
you, tiki, are a beligerent poster!!
Tiki: Wed Apr 28, 04 at 12:30:52 AM (EDT) - Los Angeles
Well LA is my home. It has always been my home, and I know that the one day I will leave Los Angeles, not sure if I will miss it. I became LA at birth, Glendale Memorial (a hop from Dodger Ball Park, an extra skip from DownTown). The traffic has been here as long as I can remember... I remember when the 405 was still a work in progress, the 118 ended in Reseda, and the 5 looked like a brand new freeway.
---edited thoughts a week later---
My guess is that 3/4 of the folks who lurk / post here could care less about sports teams. Not a problem. But I do. I do go to these sports events. I have season tickets for USC - The NCAA National College Football Champions (LSU vs USC would have been a nice game, sorry that they wanted nothing to do with us, maybe next year... Believe it or not, other fans from far away bounce into Los Angeles and the first thing they do is give us the middle finger. Either Yankee fans, or ND. Pure Nasty. I refuse to be nice to folks who have wished me an untimly death. Under the influence or not.
---end of edited thoughts a week later---
LA... LOL... Yep, I love LA... I love the traffic, I love the culture. You are either from LA or you are not. Sorry neen, San Diego is not LA. The Chargers suck. As well as Denver, KC, etc..,
---edited thoughts a week later---
OK, Here it looks like SRF had a problem with this post.
What part of the San Diego Chargers (they suck) did you not get? I am not dissin' the rest of SoCal, I am stating what every warm blooded Raider Fan knows. San Diego Sucks.
---end of edited thoughts a week later---
The Raiders are now in Oakland, but this is still a Raider Town. San Diego SUCKS. This town is USC or ucla (and as a USC person I have to say they SUCK)!!!!Sorry, Valencia, SB, long beach, etc... is NOT LA. Los Angeles is Pacoima, China Town, dog town
OK, lets get to those folks from elsewhere's.. I am sure Chicago is a nice place. I am sure NYC is a dump. (Prolly there for 1 hour of my life) Face it NYC, if NYC is the end all of end all, what the F*** are you doing here in LA?
---edited thoughts a week later---
I will not even go into the rude the NYC idgits I have been with, when they started their spiel.
---end of edited thoughts a week later---
---edited thoughts a week later---
I for one could care a less what you think of our Carls jr. or our ice cream.
OK, sorry NYC folks, White Castle is in NYC... We eat BIG hamburgers... Some of us like bacon on them...
---end of edited thoughts a week later---
This is Angels Land, This is Dodgers Land.
Beleive it or not SRF, I listen to ESPN Radio 5 to 9 hours a day. They have become a bit more local, But it is still the Dan Patrick/Ron Dibble show. The heard is a joke, well it is a good joke, and the new folks who replaced Stone/Dork have a bit to learn. It is still pretty much national. BTW... Whats your fave poptart?
The Mets SUCK... Yes we folks here think that the yankees SUCK as well. Have a problem with it... then go back... BTW, Chicago, or any other place... This is LA... We root for our teams. Sorry if you take it personal, but you suck. Go Home.
tea (aka Mrs. Dr.): Sun Apr 25, 04 at 01:54:59 PM (EDT) - I'll play the "why I love LA" game
Some here know that I've traveled and lived all around the world (4 countries in addition to the US), and numerous states in the US. In addition, I have lived in the California mountains, the desert, and by the sea. There is nowhere in the world really that compares with Southern California (there, Neen, does that better capture the "geography"?) Within a 2 hour drive we have some beautiful, skiable mountains, a desert in bloom with wild flowers, and the majestic ocean. We have live theater, music, museums, multi-cultural experiences, restaurants and nightclubs, traffic, smog, and we mostly don't know our neighbors even though our houses are too close together. There's weather that cannot be compared to anywhere else, so that we can be outdoors nearly every day of the year to ride our bikes, jog, walk, or just read. We have "seasons" but they're not as drastic as in some places. Sure we have the threat of "earthquakes" but we dont have snowstorms that blacken out the area, and force us to be homebound, and we sure don't have those earthquakes every year. It's a yin and yang experience in "EL-LAY" There are payoffs, and tradeoffs. If I didn't live near the city, I'd be off in New Zealand, on a piece of property, basically self-contained. But if I have to live in the city (and yes, I consider Irvine the "city") then this IS where I want to live. What I wish we had some of (can't say "more" because we basically have NONE) is public transportation. I wish we weren't so freakin' reliant on our cars. But we are, and that's a tradeoff. It's a beautiful place, and having experienced others, this is what I call my home.
Judi: Sun Apr 25, 04 at 08:58:11 AM (EDT) - no place like HOME
I'll put in my little bits on this topic too. As many of you know, we have travelled by truck, car and camper to every state(except Hawaii) and all Canadian Provinces. We did see some wonderful places in this big country, met some great people, but there was nothing that equalled the thril of crossing back across the border into MAINE after a long trip. This past week we drove from Maine to DC along that nasty east coast highway and spent a few days with our son. Then we continued south to Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown VA and visited another friend for a few days. It was nice, spring had sprung there but it was traffic, crowds, and housing developments with all the houses pretty much the same lined up next to each other and it was not a place we would choose to call home. Then we continued further south to the NC shore to the barrier islands and the tiny community of Straits and out to the islands to visit Cape Lookout National Seashore, where wild horses live and stayed with another friend. But we had to be watchful for dangerous snakes, insects, and it still didn't feel like home. Then we turned and headed north, this time through the Pa coal mining hills. The scenery was lovely, much like home but it was just more traffic, road construction and hotels booked solid for miles and hours of driving. As soon as we crossed the bridge into Maine we were home. No road construction, no dangerous snakes or insects, no traffic jams. Instead of the 80's temps of the south we were back in the cool 50's and even though spring is still far away we knew this was the place we were meant to live as this place is HOME.
Since I have visited LA I can only say that while the PEOPLE were friendly I could not deal with the traffic, the threat of earthquakes, the houses so close together and the perfect weather all year long. I need space, snow, seasons and a rock bound coast with icy cold ocean waters filled with lobster.
neen: Sat Apr 24, 04 at 07:16:29 AM (EDT) - la requiem
(title of post taken from EXCELLENT detective novel series -- 8th or 9th in the Elvis Cole books by Robert Crais)
i have a theory about places -- sometimes one visits a place to check it out, and -like- catches all the green lights - literally, yes, but also figuratively -- work and money is thrown one's way -- one meets great people who become great friends -- one discovers great music and great art that are within one's means to explore -- wealthy or important people are placed in one's path and do favors -- one is challenged to grow spiritually with the help of people who care, although one doesn't even know WHY they care -- sunny, cloudy or rainy, most day's climates agrees with one's disposition --
and yes, of course San P. is LA -- so's Santa Barbara/Montecito and San Diego (kind of)and so's TJ and Corona (for me, all those places mean the same thing..
people in this room who were closer to me will recall, also, that i had a gig cat-and-house-sitting (no, not cat-and-mouse sitting) for some folks who live on the prettiest street in Santa Monica, 4 houses from the beach, and went away at least 1 long weekend per month, then several times a year they'd go for 2 weeks, 3 weeks or 5-6 weeks at a time.. leaving me to make my home in this million-dollar arts & crafts decorated place on the beach with a hot-tub and 2 cats who adored me! but even when i wasn't at the beach house, i'd drive 10-15 minutes to the beach and go walking almost every day..
then, too, people speak well in LA -- they make an attempt to seem friendly (and MOSTLY they are!)
things are less expensive in LA -- everything! rent, food, going out, etc
and yes, the traffic sucks -- but at least you can get a drivers license for twelve bucks -- (38 dollars in nyc!!)
tiki - visit the Getty one week-day afternoon, the architecture and grounds are worth the trip.. i'm sure i'll think of more.. thanks for asking.. i'd love to hear what everybody else thinks when they think

Not sure when the time comes, it will, when I leave LA, if I will ever miss it. I still live in Laa Laa Land (note: Pedro still is LA) but I moved to the ultimate edge... there is an ocean. I can not recall the last time I visited an area, North of me (cept for USC and the Colisium), that was LA.
What is LA? What part of it do you miss?

I agree. I tried spreding the love on the Angels site
messge board, and saying how sadistically satisfied I
was seeing the Yankees coming nout of the gate choking
EVEN though they'd spent the millions of dollars to bulk
up their roster even more unfairly and how well the
Angels were doing in comparison, spending less
money...all I got was a bunch of people writing back
saying "The season's just started" and "Give them time,

SRF: Thu Apr 8, 04 at 08:38:36 PM (EDT) - Someone else's unbiased review of Air America
Posted by "Channel Flipper" in the LARadio-info board (populated by radio fans and radio PROFESSIONALS -- i.e. ppl who work or worked in the industry. I agree with his review and it will give you a small taste of how Al Franken's show sounds. BTW, aside from the content I want to add that technically (besides the horrible signal on an LA station and a weak-signalled daytime-only station in the Riverside area) they have a long way to go. An audible hum is heard thru much of Al's show, commercials on the station are surrounded by 3 - 7 seconds of DEAD AIR...doesn't sound like much but in the radio environment it is a killer and a no-no. Now to the review:
Caught the "O'Franken Factor" on KBLA today for the first time. Whoa, where to start?
Someone needs to tell Franken that radio needs to be fast-paced and interesting. This isn't NPR where the taxpayers foot the bill and the announcers can ramble on endlessly without making any sense. This is (supposed to be) real radio. Keep it fast, keep it moving, give the audience the illusion that there is something to tune in for that they can't get anywhere else. This was snoozeville. I couldn't even tell what the topic was, it was so much unfocused dribble. What makes, Rush, Hannity, et al. successful is that they know is how to take a topic and present it completely and simply in 9 minutes or less - and they keep it moving!
What is up with the annoying female co-host? If he needs that much of a crutch, he is done before he is started. This is my biggest beed with O'Reilly's radio show too. O'Reilly doesn't need a co-host as evidenced by his TV show, but he has one on radio and she only detracts. Same thing here.
They have a guest, but I can't tell who it is because they don't give his name during the whole interview. Find out later (at the end of the program, that is) that it's Michael Kinsley, the former CNN crossfire host. Hope the radio interview skills come soon in this area. Al, listen to Jim Rome's show, he repeats the name of his guest after about every other question, so the listener *always* know who he is talking to and won't feel the need to unnecessarily change the station.
In the middle of this interview, the mystery man is called by Franken "The Smartest Man in America". This is intriguing, because he is blathering on without making much sense, much less a point, for the duration of the interview.
I know, he must be too smart for mere mortals like me to "get"... but Franken does... yes, yes, I know...
Five minutes later, the "Smartest Man in America" is informed that Senator John Kerry will be on tomorrow, and is there any question he would like O'Franken to ask Kerry?
"Smartest Man in America": "No" ...(Dead Air while Franken and his co-host gather themselves from this amazing answer...)
Franken: You don't have any question any questions for Mr. Kerry?
"Smartest Man in America": "I don't know how to ask questions to politicians"
Did I mention he used to be a co-host of Crossfire on CNN?
I know, I just don't understand. It's all over my head.
The good news... It can only get better from here.
SRF: Thu Apr 8, 04 at 08:11:43 PM (EDT) - Penguin joke on a Penguin website
A vacationing penguin is driving through Arizona when he notices that the oil-pressure light is on. He gets out to look and sees oil dripping out of the motor. He drives to the nearest town and stops at the first gas station.
After dropping the car off, the penguin goes for a walk around town. He sees an ice-cream shop and, being a penguin in Arizona, decides that something cold would really hit the spot. He gets a big bowl of vanilla ice cream and sits down to eat. Having no hands, he makes a real mess trying to eat with his little flippers.
After finishing his ice cream, he goes back to the gas station and asks the mechanic if hes found the problem. The mechanic looks up and says, It looks like you blew a seal.
No, no, the penguin replies, its just ice cream.

Hey girl, good to see you in here catchin' up!! Congratulations on the NEW LIFE w/hubby and baby (Julian is a GREAT name to go with!). Every now and then I miss being in NJ and the New York area (except when you have blizzards as happened a few times this past winter). I still visit here now and then and also am a regular on the Anaheim Angels' fan forum as I am a big Angels' fan. Thanks to the Internet, it's a lot of sites to visit radio-related and baseball-related and I do squeeze in a little work as well so I don't starve. In what part of New York are you?? There's a new station at 107.1 FM with a AAA format and you MAY be able to receive it and check it out. If so, maybe when you have time you can do a critique. If its anything like what I expect, it will be a lot safer and less adventurous than our own long lost FM 101.9 KSCA and more like our long lost Channel 103.1. That's because New York City music radio stations are the most conservative of any market IMO. Anyway, here's a link to check out and they have a brief press release link as well. Eventually I hope they'll start streaming. http://www.1071thepeak.com/
You may also want to check out RadioParadise.com (that's the URL too)-- Now playing- Dark Side of Town-Eliza Gilkyson.
BTW, do you listen to Pete Fornatale on WFUV?
Re. Air America - in LA they've put in on a very weak signal (actually a 50,000 watt station with 49,500 of those watts aimed at the Pacific!!) Listen now, because by the end of the year they will fold UNLESS they hire some air talent who know how to do an entertaining radio show. They also need to focus less on Bush-bashing and more on articulating the liberal position. Failure to do that will only mean they'll be preaching to the choir. They need to reach the independent voter if they want to achieve their goals of getting a Democrat back into the White House. Bush-bashing turns independents off, just like Clinton-bashing did! I don't see it happening. Al Franken is not a riveting talk show host who can grab you by the collar and tell you like he thinks it is.. Even Randi Rhoads is more attuned to do radio because she is a professional, unlike the others. However, coming out a top of the hour news break, she came back and DID NOT immediately ID herself!!! This is absolutely an unpardonable sin if you are a talk show host. She needs to build an audience and a new listener tuning in should not have to guess who they are listening to!! Again, going back to what I said earlier, liberals need to articulate and state why they think the rich should pay more in taxes. They need to state why they think the U.S. should not act unilaterally in world affairs, and they need to state what a Democratic administration should do in a positive sense. So far the network sounds like one long infommercial for the Dems. The only liberals I have heard in the past who sounded OK have been Jim Hightower (more of a populist) and Alan Colmes (TV-Hannity & Colmes on FOX). Tom Leykis used to be considered a liberal but he really was more libertarian and today he's apolitical (as a talk show host). Hightower was on briefly in LA (syndicated) and Colmes currently has a nightly syndicated radio show heard in San Diego but not LA. You may know Mario Cuomo flopped as a talk show host and few make it even in more liberal-friendly NYC.
Enough about that... Happy listening, neen!!---- Johnny

Tiki-
What went wrong with my html?? At least I didn't
screw the whole pooch.
Dr. Larry: Thu Apr 8, 04 at 04:42:54 PM (EDT) - Saint Monday
Yeah...i remember them. Actually, some guy was searching for them on the web and found my
websites here
and here
(careful, will bring back memories of Yellow Room past). Saint Monday went on hiatus,
and Laura wrote a book about becoming a
"Surrendered Wife".
She's seen some success with this, as she has
a few other similar thememd books. Their
publishing company?? Saint Monday Press. I have
an interview I did with them on the radio that I
may digitize one day.
Tiki: Wed Apr 7, 04 at 09:59:53 PM (EDT) - Thoughts I missed
Yes! I will be able to flash every PCI Card in the mix to Mac OS X (10.3 for every one but the network card (Asante 10.2).
Tiki: Wed Apr 7, 04 at 09:55:40 PM (EDT) - The Tiki PowerMac 9650 Beast...
Yowzer... The ATI RADEON 7000 32MB PCI Card should arrive tomorrow! I have been running the Twin Turbo, the last few weeks (hmmm 4MG to 32MB)
So Far (Mac OS 9) the beast is screaming... The new ultra 320 int. ribbon cable has been a dream. Still waiting for the 2 sets of matched 64MG DIMMS to show up... Installed the latest igniter driver today, to get my igniter card into the mix, and installed my copy Adobe Premier (note 5.01 - hmmm, will have to upgraade to 6 for phase 2 - $$) Waiting for the RADEON, before I give it the full test.
Phase 2 - OS X
Looks like I am going to have to start with Jag... and it looks like I will end up using RockHopper (my PowerMac 9600/G3 500 to be the GpIG). That is until I see an Asante 10.3 driver.. Details to follow...

Saint Monday... Hmmm... Sounds familiar...
The Exterminator: Tue Apr 6, 04 at 05:17:10 PM (EDT) - Saint Monday
Hullo,
Way back when, in the original Yellow Room, wasn't there someone named Laura who posted occasionally and who had a band with her husband that they called Saint Monday? I think I saw them once at Luna Park.
Anyways, I found a CD of theirs at the sale at Aron's on Sunday ... it's not bad, but I bought it for the memories ...
neen: Sun Apr 4, 04 at 03:03:30 AM (EDT) - thanks!
good to hear from you 3 and i hope to hear from more soon. the baby is a boy, Julian, and he's 9 months old today.. he's crawling on hands & feet, cruising on the furniture. what a kick to be present at the beginning of a life. he's perfect.
anyone who wants a jpg of him can email me -- the email is the same thing with the 222 but at earthlink-dot-net (and i defy any bot to pick that up!)
we're in NYC very near my parents house -- a move that was not my ideal, but necessary. husband's a welder working on bridges in the area.
Docta Singa :) had no idea of your advanced degree -- congratulations -- i am sorry to say that we do not stream because a) this is the same computer i've been typing from since 1998 and b) the connection is temporary dial up >>oh no<< AND c) our speakers really, really suck anyway. but when we do upgrade, i'll hook the new baby up to some Boses and listen in to 103.1. i agree with you about the AA website and the programing can be repetitive, but I have a feeling that will change. i've already emailed them about posting a schedule. Listen Live is always a misnomer because it's all on a 15 second delay anyway ;) the first day was awesome here -- we're lucky to receive 1190am - biggest item i didn't already know (being a salon.com is my homepage kind of girl), that so much of nader's funding comes from Repubs and Neo-cons.. wow. i'd like to look that one up & verify, but it sure makes sense.
Tiki darlin' -- opposition doesn't have to mean working yourself all up about things -- it can be sensible and calm.. but no matter. tell me if you want to keep politics off the board.. i am happy if you are well and taking care of yourself. Thank you for this site!
happy daylight savings time everyone -- enjoy the light - xo, n.
Tiki: Sat Apr 3, 04 at 05:57:17 PM (EST) - neen!!!
Id especially like to hear some oppositn
LOL - I am now on High Blood Pressure Meds... I really do not do the rant thing anymore.
Dr. Larry: Sat Apr 3, 04 at 05:40:22 PM (EST) - hey neen!
...and that's DR. Larry Singer! Great to hear
from you. Congratulations on everything! Air
America is awesome, but there are some minor
nitpicky flaws that really should have been taken
care of before starting and streaming. Like...put
up a program schedule on the website. It's not
that hard. They know when who is on when.
And...while they say "Listen Live"...sometimes
they're not really broadcasting live, but a
previously recorded broadcast. It gets kinda
confusing, cause i'll listen at, say, 11 AM and
then hear the same exact thing at 5 PM and think
"They're talking about the same thing again!"
Well, hopefully they'll iron out the kinks, and
soon. The first day was kinda disastrous as the
stream gave out and the AM broadcast couldn't be
picked up. Oh..and I would hope they would list
the times according to zones. They say, for
instance, Franken is on noon to 3, but I tuned in
earlier and heard him, so I guess they are
listing Eastern times. But then I tuned in
another day around the same time, but another
host was on. STILL...it is great what they're
doing.
As for 103.1...no it's not "back"
in the Shawn Colvin/Joan Osbourne/Jason Falkner
mixed in with Sting/Dave Matthews/Bob Dylan AAA-
kinda way we had grown to love asnd appreciate,
BUT....it IS back in the playing-all-sorts-of-
different-music-mixing-old-with-new-and-giving-
artists-not-played-anywhere-eklse-but-deserving-
of-it-and-providing-an-alternnatiove-to-the-
dinosaur-of-"alternative"-stations,-KROQ kinda
way. I saw the Church at House Of Blues and won
tickets to the soundcheck from 103.1 and Marty
Wilson-Piper said it's great that we have 103.1
to listen to rather than "that silly station".
AND...you gotta catch Jonesy's Jukebox! Steve
Jones from the Sex Pistols mixes it up during the
lunch hour. He's the TOTAL anti-DJ!
Mrs. Dr (aka tea): Sat Apr 3, 04 at 01:34:29 PM (EST) - neen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A baby you say? A husband too????????
How EXCITING! What sex & age? (The baby, not the husband!) What's shakin? Where are you? THIS family has been streaming AirAmerica (we're O'Franken fans from way back, and even got to meet him & have our picture taken with him recently, as he was interviewed by Rob Reiner). As the show gets deeper, it will only get better. As for 103.1, it's NOT back. The show that's on there (and it is streamable at indy1031.fm) is a Clear Channel baby that is very independent, but playing more hardball rock rather than album alternative. I will admit, the station is good, but I still miss OUR 103.1! Welcome home, neen. Please stay in touch. I rarely post, but often lurk, so I'll be looking for you!

Happy Birthday Apple Computer!
Tiki: Tue Mar 30, 04 at 10:38:37 PM (EST) - The Tiki 9650 Beast
OK, we are on a roll...
The new ultra 320 int ribbon cable (from cyberguys.com) showed up yesterday... Yowzer, 2 very happy ultra 320 seagate cheeta scsi drives are humming (and quite cool w/ their supper coolers heat sinks/fans - photos not yet ready)... Testing a few pci cards and deciding what is immportant to this project and what can/must be phased out, as there are only 6 pci slots. It looks like most will work with Panther OS X...
Starting from the left...The old turbo twin card --- This will be replaced with a ATI RADEON 7000 MAC EDITION 32MG* pci card by Friday (EDIT --- a week from this Friday, CDW was out of stock), Next is my ignitor capture card (sizzle - not sure if there is a Panther driver), A very kewl exhaust fan (may have to go, as I might need this slot [usb - I plan on adding a new pro keyboard/mouse to the mix] down the line.), My connnection to the network (the 9650s built in sucks, 10T, ergo the Asante 100T), Initio Miles Bluenote, This runs my ext cd burner. I plan on replacing this with a firewire card and replacing the internal cd drive with a burner drive - phase 2), Initio U2W INI-A100U2W. Pound for pound the best pci scsi host card for the 9600s there is... I own 4 of them...
Back to the photo, the stock 350 mHZ has been replaced with a XLR8 G3/500.. Phase 2 will see a G4/700. And as we speak, [EDIT] I bought 2 sets of matched 64s 2X128, These will go into another 9600, and I will pull 2 matched 128s (acme/mac gurus) from the 2nd 9600 for a perfect trade to add the 2 128s for a womping total of 1040 MGs of RAM. Still have extra DIMM slots to go. Yowzer! I bought quite a few mmatch pair 128 DIMMS from MacGurus, and my thought is.. LOL well I hope you get the idea. More is more.. I want to give PhotoShop at least 3/4 of a gig of RAM to play.
More tweeks (and photos) to follow!
* tweek notes :
Yes there are wonderful RADEON 7000 64MG cards out there. You can buy them on eBay from a wonderful 3rd party vendor who will flash the cards to what you need, e me and I will give more details. But... you must give up the option of putting your Macitosh to sleep. There is no work around.
jakbeni: Tue Mar 30, 04 at 04:44:09 AM (EST) - Tiki
I often listen to 103.1 in my car and even spoke with a couple of guys from their van when I went to see Flogging Molly a few weeks ago. The interesting thing abou 103.1 is that a station that programmed by a computer program. Its a rather ingenious program since is does a much better job running the station than the overwhelming majority of stations that have live DJ's. But, DJ's at most station have very little if any lattitude to program their own show. And I would like to see them be successful enought to be around a long time. But, soon as I get home, off goes the traditional radio and on comes my computer, Especially now since I have new motive to listen to web based radio. You may prefer 103.1 and that is your preference. But when one of the best AAA stations in the country (and argueably, the best AAA statin in the country, but I can name a handful of statins I would put in the same league, such as KPIG and WRNR or at least what WRNR was like back when they use to webcast simce I can't get their signal anymore) makes its signal available on the web, being a big fan of the format, that gets my attention. I hear a lot of stuff on XRT that I doubt I'll ever hear on 103.1, Maybe if I was younger, I'd prefer 103.1. But I like hearing blues and older stuff that dates as far back as the late '60's in addition to new music. And I don't restrict myself to loud stuff also.
Tiki: Sun Mar 28, 04 at 09:53:24 PM (EST) - Hey jakbeni!!
Looks like more of the pieces are coming together for 103.1 - Rhasta Mon!
jakbeni: Sun Mar 28, 04 at 03:12:28 AM (EST) - End of a Truly Special Week
Sure is nice to be able to get my fill of WXRT again. Just like being back in Chicago without having to put up with the horrible weather. Celbrated tonight by going to downtown Disney. In the past, when I've gone to the House of Blues (HOB( there, always thought it would be a fun place just to go there to hang out. I always liked the atmosphere of that place. Well, tonight was sort of a dead night for live music and I had to run to HOB to pick up some tickets for some future shows (going to see Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Circle Jerks with Throw Rag, and Queensyche). So I decided, since I was there, I'd just hangt out for an evening. Even gave a female employee who worked in the gift shop the word of XRT being on the web and she said she'd give it a try. She also said her brother recently moved to Chicago so she was going to ask him about them. Don't know if he had given the station a try, but he'll probably soon find out.
Larry Singer: Sat Mar 27, 04 at 03:26:20 AM (EST) - great movie
