Would that be the "Sleeping with demons" MP3? If so I already have a lovely copy on CD that either you are Sandy sent me. It was so long ago I don't remember the source but I have that song.It was when you recorded it in a studio I think. Got more?

Sorry for my long absences, but I could think of no group of people I'd rather this with. This is my favorite quote ever from someone in the current administration.

Donald Rumsfeld, quoted on CNN.com regarding the chaos in Baghdad:

"It's untidy. And freedom's untidy. And free people are free to make mistakes and commit crimes and do bad things," stormed Rumsfeld, his hand chopping the air for emphasis in response to reporters' questions at a Pentagon briefing.

So if you don't hear from me all weekend, it's because this free man will be out smoking dope and sleeping nude on the White House lawn.

Judi: Thu Apr 10, 03 at 07:35:47 PM (EDT) - glad

I'm glad I only get the nicely sanitized 3 big network tv station news broadcasts showing things fit for family viewing. War is bad enough, I don't need to see mutilated kids. So I offer up this thought:

Have you noticed anything fishy about the inspection teams who were sent to Iraq to find the WMD? They're all men!

How in the name of the United Nations does anyone expect men to find Saddam's stash? We all know that men have a blind spot when it comes to finding things. For crying' out loud! Men can't find the dirty clothes hamper. Men can't find the jar of jelly until it falls out of the cupboard and splatters on the floor.... and these are the people we have sent into Iraq to search for hidden weapons of mass destruction?

I keep wondering why groups of mothers weren't sent in. Mothers can sniff out secrets quicker than a drug dog can find a gram of dope. Mothers can find gin bottles that dads have stashed in the attic beneath the rafters. They can sniff out a diary two rooms and one floor away. They can tell when the lid of a cookie jar has been disturbed and notice when a quarter inch slice has been shaved off a chocolate cake. A mother can smell alcohol on your breath before you get your key in the front door and can smell cigarette smoke from a block away. By examining laundry, a mother knows more about their kids than Sherlock Holmes. And if a mother wants an answer to question, she can read an offender's eyes quicker than a homicide detective.

So... considering the value a mother could bring to an inspection team, why are we sending a bunch of old men who will rely on electronic equipment to scout out hidden threats?

My mother would walk in with a wooden soup spoon in one hand, grab Saddam by the ear, give it a good twist and snap, "Young man, do you have any weapons of mass destruction?" And God help him if he tried to lie to her. She'd march him down the street to some secret bunker and shove his nose into a nuclear bomb and say, "Uh, huh, and what do you call this, mister?" Whap! Thump! Whap! Whap! Whap!

And she'd lay some stripes across his bare bottom with that soup spoon, then march him home in front of the whole of Baghdad. He'd not only come clean and apologize for lying about it, he'd cut every lawn in Baghdad for free for the whole damn summer.

Inspectors my BEHIND... You want the job done? Send a woman over there!!!

SRF: Thu Apr 10, 03 at 12:49:27 PM (EDT) - Sandy

Were those horrifically wounded children those that had their ear/ears cut off by Saddam's thugs?? Just wondering.

Sandy: Thu Apr 10, 03 at 11:12:12 AM (EDT) - Misc.

It's no fun going to see your family quack... but when I see the rheumatologist.... dang, you gotta like being the youngest woman in the waiting room!!!

RTE, you *are* referring to a fresh bag of Cheetos, right?

I'm getting bipolar, watching the evening news. PBS news is showing the toppling of the Saddam statue in Baghdad, but BBC World News (on just before PBS news) is showing horrifically wounded children. We should never forget that - the price has been unspeakably high.

Judi: Thu Apr 10, 03 at 07:12:07 AM (EDT) - no to free music

I do not download MP3's, the only music I listen to online comes from the artists own web site or Amazon where you can listen to a snippet of the song or perhaps the entire song but I have never tried to save that song on my computer. I have a cd burner. I owned it a full year before burning my 1st cd! The first thing I burned was files to transfer to my new laptop. I load my own already purchased cds on to my computer in iTunes and I have thought of burning a cd of my favorite cuts to have in the car but lately I have been enjoying the radio too much to bother with a car cd. I'm like Sandy, leave generous tips, buy cds new or used from stores. Some things in life are free, others need to paid for. Music is the latter.

Did we find a copy of "The Negro Problem" PMS?

Not sure wher you have been. I have been a fan for years. I hope they reunite very soon and you are privilaged to see them live...

Note: I have at least 40 live tapes (with permission)

Tiki: Wed Apr 9, 03 at 11:28:57 PM (EDT) - My 2 cents

As an artist (the graphic type) I have thought long and hard on this subject. I do hope Jones bounces in to add his 2 cents on this topic.

And as anyone else, I like free things. Heck, if the situation warrents it, I will give personal data, fill out a survey, ect.. to get FREE thingies. But...

Some of these DL's are out and out theft. Regardless of the fact that I myself have not found one MP3 that came close to the quality of a legit CD, Record, or tape... The stuff sucks (IMHO).

So what we now have is folks (last time I checked... Everyone has a CD Burner) are pooling in their funds to buy one CD and making mass CD copies... I hear some folks have advertisments on their dorm doors, on what titles they are selling.. This is theft.

You can defend this all you want, but the facts are the big 5 record companies are losing money (ha ha ha, like I care) and are cutting their rosters left and right.

Today artists like John Tesh are going the DIY way. His indie lable moves over 1 mil a title. Many indie bands are going this route. You are not hurting the big 5 when you steal their tunes. You are now hurting the artist.

Schoolmarm Sandy: Wed Apr 9, 03 at 11:00:17 PM (EDT) - KD

That's "DO" two responses....

Sandy: Wed Apr 9, 03 at 10:59:35 PM (EDT) - Thomas

I am not pro-free download. I guess I empathize too much with the musician... they deserve something for their artistry, but yeah, a dollar straight to the artist is probably more appreciated than the pittance from the record company. Same reason I never walk past the tip jar - the house is most likely paying peanuts. Stale, scrawny peanuts. I buy used cds, tho, on the assumption that the product has been through the sales cycle once already.

KD: Wed Apr 9, 03 at 09:52:20 PM (EDT) - Thomas

Does two responses from one person count?

Judi: Wed Apr 9, 03 at 08:21:30 AM (EDT) - I agree with KD

(not really)
game 5, still no "Play ball". 6th time is the charm? maybe. Not looking good.

Here is a funny true golf adventure reported on local tv yesterday: someone, not sure who it was, asked his secretary to book him a flight to Augusta for the Masters tournament. He got off the plane to cold and snow in Augusta MAINE! Called his secretary asking her to make arrangements to get him to Georgia- flights from Maine to GA fly out of the Portland jetport. His secretary told him she would get him a hotel room in Portland and book a next day flight from Portland to the correct Augusta. Yup, she made a hotel reservation and flight reservation in Portland OREGON. Wonder if she flunked grography in High school and wonder if she still has her job? He probably ended up driving to GA.

KD: Wed Apr 9, 03 at 02:46:11 AM (EDT) - Thomas

I don't download.

Not to say I wouldn't in the future for test listening, but I prefer buying. (Of course, I buy mostly used.)

Thomas More: Tue Apr 8, 03 at 03:15:40 PM (EDT) - Free Music

Here's a thread that's sure to evoke a response or two. How do you feel about swapping music files (or films) online, for free, as opposed to purchasing them?

I can hear the cry of purists, and I'm reminded of a friend who sends a dollar to the artist when he acquires a few of their tracks online. He figures it's about what the artist would receive from the sale of a CD, since they don't always sell for the recommended retail price, and record companies typically don't report all sales.

There's also the well-known fact that manufacturers of CDs routinely sell many copies "out the back door," as you know when many of the CDs you purchase "used" are stamped with the slogan "Not for Sale - For Promotional Use Only." Those are the ones for which no taxes or artist's royalties are paid, or songwriter's royalties, etc.

Many feel that since the record companies have been ripping off the public and the artists for so long, it justifies their trading bootleg tracks for free, just to get even.

As for the record companies, back in 1950 they cried that tape recorders would kill the record bkusiness, and even tried to get them banned. As it turned out, their use promoted more record sales than ever during the following three decades.

They never learn, do they? Now they'd like to have "protection" on CDs so they can't be copied.

KD: Tue Apr 8, 03 at 01:34:02 PM (EDT) - add music

These weren't recommended; I just took a chance on them.

The only cds I paid full price for was a Prefab Sprouts 2-disc compilation (my arm was twisted), and the cd by Matrix.

KD: Tue Apr 8, 03 at 01:28:04 PM (EDT) - I agree with Judi

Well ... maybe I don't. No lottery, just cheap, careful shopping and lots of reccommendations. (Parking lot sale philosophy: If you paid 25¢ for a cd, and one song is good, you've done well. If two songs are good, you've done great.)

One 25¢ cd I took a chance on was The Mopeds, The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Mopeds. This is one of those cds that will take a few listenings to connect with but ... The Mopeds are three guys from Switzerland who sing in English, borrowing instruments they don't have, and adding a touch of jazz sensibility to what is essentially a pop album. (Like Joni M.) It's complicated, interesting, and I especially like what they do with their pick-up horn section. No echo, no reverb; sounds like they could have be recorded outdoors ... and unusual arrangements ... it's a really different sound. I could end up likeing the whole cd.

Johnny Bravo, on the other hand, while produced by Ric O., sounds post-Nirvana and really isn't all that interesting. (I wasn't in the mood for hard rock last night; maybe that's why.) The song titles are interesting, Grew Up In The 80's ... Karate Champ ... James At Fifteen ... Alien Song ... But the creativity in the music didn't live up to the creativity in titling. Punkin would probably like it.

Which brings me to the Drowners. 21st century MTV friendly pop. Not bad ... Bittersweet could have beeen a hit. However, as I progressed further into the cd I found One Star, a clever dig at music reviewers, and Virus, another dig -- this time at hooky, melodic pop ... which itself is hooky and melodic pop song in a KSCA way. The Drowners are Swedish, but don't sing in the accented English like the Mopeds. Unfortunately, their web site no longer exists to promote their 2000 release ... but it too is interesting in its own way.

75¢ spent. What the hell.

Judi: Tue Apr 8, 03 at 10:17:39 AM (EDT) - KD

Did you win the lottery or something? Planning to add on a room to the house for your collections? Where do you find the time to listen to all that much music? Will most appear for re-sale on EBay soon? I have arrived at the point in my life where I have a really good collective mix of music, don't really care for the new artists anyway, and only occasionally add to my collection when something really memorable hits the airways. The more I hear music from the 40's-70's the more I dislike today's music. But then again I'm an old fogie. FYI: It snowed here again last night. I have had it up to HERE with winter.

That's enough for now.

KD: Tue Apr 8, 03 at 01:02:54 AM (EDT) - Sandy

You asked for it ...

The President of the US, Tangerine Dream, Miles, Seal, Yello, Brand New Heavies, The Young Dubliners ep, Scritti Politti, The Drowners, Johnny Bravo (produced by Ric Ocasek), The Mopeds; and singles by Element, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Roxette, Grant Lee Buffalo, Wild Colonials, Space Channel 5; plus compilations Coke Alt Rock, The Death Of Rock And Roll, The Scene Compliation, Paper or Plastic?, Sell it to the Beat (rca), After The Fire (alt versions to benifit the New Mexico Disaster Relief Fund), Coldfront comp ... over 30 cd's for under 30 clams.

I elected to buy some comps that looked interesting, and collect single versions for b-sides and such ... Plus some of the above was recommended to me by the person with whom I carpooled, whose knowledge and cd collection well exceed mine.

We ended up listening to The Negro Problem on the way home. Whoa ... where have I been?

Sandy: Mon Apr 7, 03 at 07:43:23 PM (EDT) - So, KD

Judi: Mon Apr 7, 03 at 05:10:23 PM (EDT) - snowed out again!

LOL! The Portland Sea Dogs got snowed out again! They left snow covered Portland and went to the first game of the season in Connecticut where they got snowed out again there today. np: Holly and the Italians, Rock Against Romance

Judi: Mon Apr 7, 03 at 08:11:00 AM (EDT) - Sea Dogs

FYI: A sea dog is a seal or seal lion or some mystery sea animal, called a "dog" because they soundd like they are barking. The mascot is Slugger the sea dog and he is really funny, lots of fan interraction. Food sold at the games are the famous "Sea Dog Biscuits" that are huge round ice cream sandwiches that cost $2.00, hot DOGS, fried dough, frosty beverages, popcorn but I don't remember seeing lobster rolls. One of the fan favorites is the lighthouse that rises up from behind the center field fence, flashes the light and blows the foghorn each time a home run is scored. Ball field is right beside I-295 and I'm sure a few motorists were suprised to see a lighthouse rise up beside the highway flashing and bellowing the horn as they drove by. Go, Dawgs! Does the food concession sell Sea dogs???? Lobster rolls? (you can get sushi at Anaheim Stadium)

Judi: Sun Apr 6, 03 at 12:27:22 PM (EDT) - Play Ball?

The Red Sox affiliate right here in Maine, called the Sea Dogs has been trying ever so hard to have "opening day" but had to be postponed 4 times already due to snow! Thursday was to be the official opening day, snowed out, rescheduled for Friday, snowed out. Moved to Saturday, really snowed out! Today although it is sunny there is 5" of snow at Hadlock field. Postponed again. Poor Dogs, poor fans. And the field was rebuilt to feature a mini green monster complete with coke bottle and Citgo sign too! Team is on the road now and might try again next Thursday if it doesn't snow then too.

Yes we have been told the drought threat is over, however any water we can get in any form is welcome. WCLZ gets better every day. They went from a fantastic AAA station to an attempt at pop 40 or some mess and back to AAA after public outcry. They do have a second "Greetings from Area Code 207" compilation out but I thought it had too much country for my taste. Any springtime suprise will be gladly welcomed.

Note to Rodger: still unsure of the dates we will be home or away this June-July. Still waiting for the official announcement as to the final day of school, and that is based on number of snow days used and that could change any day aparently. Then we take off for a week fly fishing at a remote camp in Northern Maine, (West Branch Pond cabins) and then a cruise on the Scotia Prince to Canada and THEN we will be home. Won't know exact dates till mid May. But you can come to Maine any time, I don't need to be present!

Sandy: Sat Apr 5, 03 at 11:20:10 AM (EST) - Judi

I suppose there's some comfort in knowing it's all seeping down into your aquifer and buffering you from another drought this summer..... stay warm, keep those tunes on - WCLZ plays great music, judging from the CDs you've sent me in times past. Hey, I'll have a springtime surprise for you in the mail soon - be watching!

KD: Wed Apr 2, 03 at 03:02:22 AM (EST) - Poogie

A laser turntable is an analog source. There might be use for those vinyl records after all!...

KD: Wed Apr 2, 03 at 03:00:44 AM (EST) - Tiki

Well, I was told "formerly" but was advised tonight that the band had been on hiatus. Listened to it tonight ... I'll need some more time to listen to the lyrics ...

Anyone heard of the band Pop Art?

Poogie: Wed Apr 2, 03 at 01:13:32 AM (EST) - Thomas

Analog sources? What are analog sources? ;-) Actually, I got rid of those. No tape player or turntable. In fact, I have a stack of LPs collecting dust in the corner and I'm ready to dump them in the trash. I do listen to the high-definition formats?SACD and DVD-A. More SACD than DVD-A. Very nice detailed sound. They lack the warmth of LPs, but they can sound amazing if properly mixed.

KD: Mon Mar 31, 03 at 02:10:08 PM (EST) - Thomas

That's one thing I'd like to do but have not done yet -- learn to fly. (Perhaps I'll wait until punkin's out of college.)

The shows on Discovery Wings typically don't focus on the common-knowledge stuff; usually its the lesser known achievements of a specific technology in a particular era. (Russian helicopter development in the 50's, for instance.) There's a lot of war stuff, but the shows I've seen usually focus on the technology problems solved by innovation and/or the engineers and pilots that pushed performance. (Shooting out propellers in WWI aircraft, for instance.)

Car amps are bi-wired because of power issues and the enormous energy required to run large subs. (Which is also why car amps often have HUGE caps. 1.0-farad caps are not that ususual for competition cars.) Without big caps or bi-wiring the high end gets really distorted. With some high-end amps you can tune the crossovers and adjust the "Q". (But I won't mention any names ...)

KD: Mon Mar 31, 03 at 01:45:45 PM (EST) - Score

My b-day trip was productive. I scored: Harvey Mason, Mike Oldfield remastered, Del Amitri, Stew (formerly of The Negro Problem), Wendy Carlos, Luscious Jackson (autographed with guitar pick inside!), Sparks, Lindsey Buckingham, Nick Lowe, Man or Astro-Man?, Dave Mason, Bob Welch, Modern Lovers, Puffy, Willie Porter, Men At Work remastered, Mungo Jerry, Spinners, XTC, Prefab Sprouts, and 3 custom comps burned especially for the trip. Plus ...

A jazz-fusion band I thought was long gone, never-to-reform, released a cd last year: Matrix. (That was my "I can't believe this" moment.) What a find! Naturally, I'll be harassing the record company for cd reissues of their earlier stuff. (HoS: Matrix was one of the groups on that custom vinyl2cd project you helped me with a few years ago.) In-freaking-credible, and the band sounds great ...

This should last me a while.

KD: Mon Mar 31, 03 at 03:09:25 AM (EST) - music

However, earlier I was introduced to the Prefab Sprouts. Anyone know them?

KD: Mon Mar 31, 03 at 03:07:08 AM (EST) - iTunes

I'll report as soon as I get iTunes installed. Had a little problem with my cd burner going unrecognized and me being unable to find a fix. Finally found what I needed to do after revising a Google search. (Needed to turn off some extensions in 9.2) And, for the record ...

The iomega driver download site was less than worthless; it was confusing.
