Tiki: Fri Mar 26, 04 at 11:01:12 PM (EST) - Part Dos

(insert pounding head into wall for hours here)

I asked for a project, well a project came my way. I dislike posting this, but it looks like my Thorens TT project will be moved back a few months.

Back to the 9600’s... The first time I ever touched one at the mouse, I fell in love with them. At $4,000 + apiece I knew it would be awhile before I could ever call one my own. I own a bunch now. 3 years ago, maybe 4, I bought me a perfect Mac 9650/350 workgroup server. A project I have put off for years... Imagine a 9650/G4... LOL.. So I gutted it today... I kept the motherboard, the power supply, zip be gone, need that for a hd bay, and added a 800 megs of RAM... Yes,, I am taking photos and will post. But switching initio SCSI Host Adapters and internal termination, ribbon cables resulted in the same problems... Than I found a very old ribbon/int termination set up!!! Yes... The weakest link...

Well for this project, the ultimate is Granite Teflone ribbons... hold that thought, almost $200 per computer, and I have more 9600/ultra wides that might die in a few days. Not sure if I have ever turned you folks onto cyberguys.com. Well now I have... THE BEST Prices for almost top on the line parts. Two computers equals (ok I bought an external cable) $160 (20 bucks shipping overnight). We buy almost everything from them now. Yes I plan on buying the granite stuff, as well as a new vidio card...

Very soon I will put up this project (tons of photos) on the gp site... LOL... 6 pci slots, already filled... Hmmm, My dremmel may be chopping up that floppy bezel... Details to follow...

Tiki: Fri Mar 26, 04 at 10:19:56 PM (EST) - Hi akageorge!

What a week! Hmmmmmm, Planets lining up, lost luggage, ultra wide seagate cheater hard drives (including a very new 32 gig ultra 320) playing possum on the desk top...

Sorry you missed us akageorge. Prolly a good thing that you did. First I misplaced Diane’s Birthday card, I think I threw it away somehow. Quick Yoda... Smart he be, buy birthday card with vd card he did, smart he be, nowhere to be found...

Anywho, to my dismay (it seems like only yesterday that my old sys hd fried) yesterday the dreaded bomb (yet no chimes of death) showed itself on my trusty 9600/G3 500 desktop!!! OK no panic, I thought, and grabbed a TechTool Pro CD. The ultra hd in question was partitioned into 2 volumes, and the 2nd partition mounted with ease... Hmmmmm, thought I. Then all heck broke loose, the computer went into boot, reboot, never ending loop. ACK. At this moment my only thought was to get "Johnny Cash" (my 2nd drive w/ everything - ALL client files into another computer, I chose Yuko’s 9600, bypassing the external enclosure, and to my horror DiscTools gave it the thumbs down, and more heck broke loose.. Willie (Yuko’s w/ everything - ALL client files) vanished. Was this some sort of evil virus?

Part 2 to come...

akageorge: Fri Mar 26, 04 at 06:37:23 PM (EST) - Home again home again

My apologies to those of you whom I didn't get to see on my trip to CA. The whole Chicago airport delays / lost luggage / sleeping in my rental car Thursday night on the way to the desert fiasco kinda threw me off. (By the way, if anyone is looking for a real getaway from the world, I recommend Tecopa hot springs, out in the desert. I didn't get to see Death Valley this time out, but some of the nearby geography was pretty cool.)

Many thanks to Frank and Donna for their hospitality, and it was good to see so many of you, as well as my non-Yellow friends, however briefly.

So this is the first I've touched a computer in 8 days. I'm sure I'm over my limit at Yahoo ...

jakbeni: Fri Mar 26, 04 at 03:51:57 AM (EST) - Last Weekend

Had a great time this last weekend. Seen 4 live shows: 3 concerts and 1 play. Friday night, went to the Malibu in to see A Flock of Seagulls. Think they were a little too loud and their sound was not all that great. So i was not too impressed by this show. But this was only a warm up. Saturday afternoon I seen the Odd Couple starring Barbara Eden and Rita McKenzie at Cerritos Center. Was intertesting seeing a female version of one of my all time favorite sit-coms. Saturday night, went to see Particle at the El Rey Theater. There style of music is somewhat reminiscent of '70's style jazz-rock fustion. What a great display of stamina since they were up there for nearly 4 hours playing their butts off. Warming up was Rob Weisserman of Grateful Dead fame. He started out playing solo. Then the base guitarist from Particle joined him, and one-by-one, the other members of Particle joined him for a free form jam. Then. after a short break, Particle came back on stage. Then they took a 15 minute recess and came back for a third set. They started this set with a cover of Pink Floyd's "One of these Days". Never seen this song done live, The audience loved this band and they had everyon in the El Rey dancing. Then, Sunday night, went to see a blast from the past: the group Chicago. The Chicago concert was great! It was one of those shows where you could feel the electricity going through the crowd, Also, it was a lot of fun hearing a bunch of great songs that I grew up with but have not heard in a while. Four days later and I still haven't come totally down from this musical orgasim as I like to call it.

jakbeni: Fri Mar 26, 04 at 03:38:42 AM (EST) - Reunited with my true love

My birthday present is finally here, about 2.5 months late, but finally here. One of the first AAA stations in the country, WXRT Chicago has finally made its signal available to those of us on the web. Having grown up with this station, this really means a lot to me. And WXRT is largely responsible for shaping my musical tastes and expanding my musical horizons. This is truly a wonderful treat. Check it out! www.wxrt.com

Judi: Wed Mar 24, 04 at 07:36:20 AM (EST) - Thanks Larry!

That's what I was looking for, I knew there had to be a collection of them somewhere. I don't like to be picky of other folks web site but you would think that person would realize the red margain was covering their text and would have at least indented the text? But I'm sure I can find an image to borrow there somwhere.

My iTunes rule: I only download the free tunes I get from the magic numbers under the Pepsi caps. 8 free so far.. No I didn't drink any drop of that Pepsi, I have a source for empties.

Dr. Larry: Wed Mar 24, 04 at 12:39:21 AM (EST) - Made with Mac

Judi: Here's some: Made with Mac

Dr. Larry: Wed Mar 24, 04 at 12:36:33 AM (EST) - iTunes

Poogie: I know what you mean. It is TRULY addicting. Just going through and finding stuff that you didn't know exsisted can be harmful. I fiound this cool CD by Big Sir where the do a version of Jeff Buckley's "Everybody Here Wants You" that was way cool. Their version of Hall & Oates's "Sarah Smile" sealed the deal. Now i've come to enjoy their original stuff too. All because I wanted to see what Jeff Buckley stuff they had, so I used their awesome search engine. (Have you ever misspelled stuff and seen the corny suggestions they come up with??) I HIGHLY recommend that Big Sir if you want a nice mellow CD to listen to.

As for Yo La Tengo, have you heard Dump's CD That Skinny Mothefucker With The High Voice? It's all his acoustic take on Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer and showstopper with his guitar pyrotechnics - Prince. Brilliant CD.

Poogie: Wed Mar 24, 04 at 12:16:22 AM (EST) - Step away from the iTunes!

I can't stop the madness. Downloading song after song - Yo La Tengo, the Eels, the Old 97s, Ron Sexmith, the Juliana Theory...

Other good buys on CD: Zero 7 (When It Falls) and Sondre Lerche (Two Way Monologue)

Oh my, I'm broke now. But happy!

Judy: No "Made on a Mac" icons here. I'm embarrasses to say, I've never made any web page on a Mac, or any other computer, for that matter. Isn't that sad?

Tiki: A tube driven 'Pod? That's radical!

Dr. Larry: Tue Mar 23, 04 at 11:08:24 PM (EST) - Awesome chance to help someone out...

...and pick up some cool prizes to boot! Jackie Farry was diagnosed with cancer. She's a manager and friend to many in the "scene". They're putting on a benefit for her at Spaceland April 1 (no kidding) with The Breeders, Lou Barlow, Har Mar Superstar (with Karen O. from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs!) I saw the Breeders this weekend at Spaceland and it was AMAZING!

While no anticipated Pixies reunion, Joey showed up and played "Gigantic"! Check out the pix, then video at: Breeders/Spaceland.

Anyhow...here's the part how you can help someone. They're holding a raffle with some ultra-cool one-of-a-kind booty from Jackie's cool friends. If you can't make the show, or if you can and you still want a chance, go here: Jackie Farry Raffle

I don't need a zillion. One really awesome one will do. I will be making my cheesy web site, all about Maine of course on my MACINTOSH computer, so thought I'd start the page with a lovely graphic stating that fact. I have seen a few here and there. I Googled made on a Mac and saw a few more. Pick one or 2 of your favorites, Poogie can lead me to her favorite. Anyone else with a Mac fetish can point me to their favorite.

Tiki: Sun Mar 21, 04 at 08:54:26 PM (EST) - Judi

May need to go through a few jaz drives, but I have a zillion of them... ASAP, I will upload them to a folder for you.

Judi: Sun Mar 21, 04 at 10:22:55 AM (EST) - everything Apple?

Since you mention this board is to be helpful to use Apple users, how about directing me to your favorite "Made on a Mac" graphic suitable for my web site when I remake it? Or your favorite Apple graphic with the word Macintosh in it somewhere? Thanks!

Yowzer! You will be very happy!

Judi: Thu Mar 18, 04 at 01:07:16 PM (EST) - all set

Tried a few user names out but most of the ones I wanted were taken. So as I'm sitting at my computer trying to think of a good name quickly the lightbulb went on, MACINTOSH! Why not? this is a Macintosh only household, I have apples stenciled around the room so I'm now
macintosh@gwi.net

moving into the high speed lane at last.

Yup.(Sniff) Looked at yer movin' pitchurs. Yer such a cute couple/threesome/foursome. And Lynlea is a young woman now -- where'd that little ten-year-old go so fast?

Dr. Larry: Tue Mar 16, 04 at 10:47:25 PM (EST) - Getting sentimental??

akageorge: was that you getting all sentimental and melancholy??

Judi: Tue Mar 16, 04 at 08:20:35 AM (EST) - broadband

ok folks, I'm about to enter the speed zone by ditching my dial up and moving onward to broadband. Sadly I have to bid farewell to my old email address and I have not had a chance to sign up for a new account with some lame name quite yet. First I had to deal with the phone company to remove the second phone line since I won't be needing that, but I had to switch my phone number from one line to the other line because one line entering my home was 100yds short of broadband access so after a messy switching process later this month I'll qualify for the broadband account. So if you have my ime.net mail address it will no longer work after March 20th and I won't have internet access for over a week!!! when the phone company gets around to switching lines and numbers and I can sign up for that speedy broadband.

Oh and I'm ultra crabby these days... stupid Atkins diet....And oh goodie we are getting 10-12" of lovely snow tonight, meaning husband will be home using MY computer all day tomorrow because there will be no school.

If someone feels compelled to send me some important email message that can't wait until I get a new address around April 1st, the yahoo.com address still works. Preface the @ with seaglass1 however.

AWWWWWW!!!

Dr. Larry: Mon Mar 15, 04 at 04:19:35 PM (EST) - This week in Mac History, 1990

This is wild: Apple introduces the "wicked fast" Mac IIfx (US$9,900), an expandable (six NuBus slots and room for dual floppy and hard drives) system with a 40 MHz 68030 CPU, besting the previous speed record holder, the 25 MHz Mac IIci. Whereas the Lisa had failed to sell well at the same price point seven years earlier, the Mac IIfx was in great demand, especially among graphics designers who willingly paid for the fastest machines they could get.

Dr. Larry: Sat Mar 13, 04 at 03:17:24 PM (EST) - Some movies to share

Hey guys...I FINALLY have put up some movies I made for our 3rd anniversary and thought i'd share - Version 1

Version 2

Enjoy!

Anybody have Nina's email? One to AOL got bounced back. I'm still akageorge at yahoo, if anyone can send me her updated address. Thanks!

I'll be in touch over the weekend to see when I'll get to visit with whom. I'm all kerfuffled about my schedule at this point, but dammit, I'm coming, and I'm gonna have a good time! See you soon!

Now the tough thought is how to allow differnt communication to live together. AFAIK, only Adobe "InDesign v2.0" can do this. But what about a web site?

On this page we use this meta tag
meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"

On our Japanese page we use
http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=Shift_JIS"

The meta tag tells your browser what character coding to jump to. I know there is a push for a global browser, but I am not sure if this will work until every browser understands uni-code. We are gettinng there with the open font formats, )a font works on the mac platform as well as windoze) but (ok, we are far ahead of the game than we were 7 years ago) we are not there yet...

Tiki: Fri Mar 12, 04 at 10:24:21 PM (EST) - I must add...

All of the links are dead... click on one and you will get our 404 page. But this is very kewl...

GP is learning quite a bit. Not sure when, but I hope that one day I will know a bit more about Japanese fonts.

You want to think that translating USA english to Japanese would be very simple. Than you find a word like "directions" or "direct". Hahaha we Americans pick a word, say we like the word, and tack 20 different meanings to the word. I direct you (a command) I direct (art director, conductor, etc), North, South, etc, Put slot A into hole B, and on and on...

I like the challenge! And I hope there are a few of you up for this challenge. We will start documenting everything we are learning about putting up web sites in japanese. I see this as a hands on learning project. I plan on jumping to another language after I have this one wired. But if you are working on another language, please feel free to e me... and I will put your info on a web page. Jump right into the thought KD when you get a chance. ;)

Try this station for a change of pace -- A locally owned, operated and programmed Americana radio station in Denver ˆ AM 1510 KCUV ˆ Colorado’s Underground Voice. You can tune them in at 1510 AM on the radio dial if you live in the Denver/Front Range area (yeh, right haha) or over the Internet at www.kcuvradio.com where they stream in high bit-rate stereo. (64 kb/sec)
What’s Americana music? It's music rooted in American music and culture ˆ with a little attitude. Americana is a combination of influences and styles, including alternative country, progressive rock, folk, blues, and bluegrass. It’s fun, it’s loose, it’s down home and it’s real. It might even make you want to slap your thigh once or twice! Americana music just feels right. Just listen for two hours and you’ll know.

KCUV sincerely appreciates that you took the time to read this note. They’re a small radio station trying to make a difference in a place where commercial radio programming has become watered down, homogenized and disconnected from the listener. They work hard to provide their listeners with authentic Americana music programming. They hope you’ll give them a listen. If you like what you hear or want to request a song please drop them a note on the KCUV website. Thanks for your time!
