jakbeni: Sun Mar 2, 03 at 11:08:54 PM (EST) - Jones/Thomes
I seen Ben Harper during the Horde Festival a few years back and I have to second your recommendation to Thomas. What a great performer. By the way, I, too, like discovering new talent. That is why I usually get to most shows early, to discover any warm up bands that are worth following. Sometimes, I'm like do I have to put up with this %@!%^$#. But other times, I make I find the artist that justifies me doing this again. But that is what I love most about music festivals since these festivals are basically a smogasboard of this type of thing.
jakbeni: Sun Mar 2, 03 at 10:53:50 PM (EST) - No more Rodger, at least as far as this room is concerned
Think I'll go back to using this handle again.
Rodger Barrow: Sun Mar 2, 03 at 10:48:55 PM (EST) - Syd Straw@McCabes
A few years back when I volunteered at KCRW, they gave free CD's to their volunteers. One of them was by Syd Straw. Seemed like a good CD, so i thought I'd see her live. Wasn't impressed though since she spent as much time talking about irrelevant stuff as she did playing music. If I wanted to see an unfunny comedian, I would have settled for a night at the Comedy and Magic Store in Hermosa Beach. As Frank Zappa would say, shut up and play your guitar.
There were a few noteworthy highlights though. During her first set she had Mike Watt (formerly of the Minutemen and Firehose) come out and play bass. Since I've always liked Mike, it was fun seeing him. In her second set, she had Dave Alvin (of the Blasters) and Rob Waserman come out and accompany her. But other than that, was not impressed with the show
By the way, coming next Saturday to McCabes is John McEuen and his sting band. John was the founder of the Nitty Gritty Dirt band. Still undecided at this point, but there is a good chance I'll go to see him next Saturday.
Rodger Barrow: Sun Mar 2, 03 at 10:40:45 PM (EST) - Lazy Cowgirls@the Garage
Friday night's show. This was probably the best show I've seen at the garage yet. Both the previous times I went, the only band that was worth a darn was the headliner and had to put up with a 3 horrible warm up bands. This time, 3 of the four bands that performed were worth the time.
Warming the evening up was a band called the Rich Girls. Despite their name, they were an all male band and they were also the one band that did not impress me. Next up was Dirty Power, a San Francisco band that at least had a tight sound. Worth seeing, but was not impressed enough to buy their CD that was on sale. By the way, the L.A. Weekley wrote up Dirty Power as one of their top recommendations for the evening. Next was a band called Sweet Justice. Good lead guitar work here. If they had a CD for sale or a mailing list, I would have been a customer. But they had neither, so I just enjoyed their set and that was it. Finally, the Lazy Cowgirls went on. These guys have been around so long they are basically an L.A. Institution. Recall seeing them back in the '80's at Raji's. Still around. Still capable of putting on a good show.
The other highlight of going to the Garage in Silverlake is being able to eat at Jay's across the street. Just a small little hamburger stand onn the corner, but terrific food. I really like their Jay butgers (which is a chili hamburger), their Jay dog (a chili dog, of course), and their tamalies (which are served with chili). The food and the classic hamburger stand atmosphere makes me rate this as great place to eat.
Rodger: Sun Mar 2, 03 at 10:27:47 PM (EST) - Pretenders@Wiltern Theater
It was nice to get to see them Thursday night. Was reminded of a lot of songs they made popular over the years. And Chris Hynde, what a trooper. She made several references to the doctor that shot her in the but with cortizone earlier in the day so we could see her in concert that evening. Oh well. Old age catches up with all of us sooner or later. That is, unless we die early.
Warming up for the Pretenders was a group called the Mighty Senators. They were a cross between funk and rap and were from the Baltimore area. Maybe its a sign that I'm getting old, but I did not care for them since I never liked rap.
Its always nice going to the Wiltern, but being this extravagant big theater build back in the early half of the 1900's, I'm sure it costs a fotune to maintain and clean the place. I was in the balconey and looked up at the lights they had set up along the ceiling and walls, some of which are roughly 1000 feet above ground level and always wonder what it would be like to have a job changing the light bulbs in that place. Just like when i lived in chicago and in the city's northwest side, there was WXRT studios, a one story building with a 10 story radio transmit tower on top of it. I always use to joke about getting a job there to change the top flashing red light bulb that sat on the top of that tower. However, if I did get the opportunity to do that, I'm sure the yellow streak down the middle of my back would begin to glow.
Rodger: Sun Mar 2, 03 at 10:14:11 PM (EST) - A Weekend full of live music
Went out Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night for live music. Will give my reviews in the posts that follow.

Tiki: Sun Mar 2, 03 at 09:52:31 PM (EST) - Judi
When I put up this board... Well I did not think one person from the YR would show up. Not one..
The YR is history... type in yr.org and you will see nothing. This I can not fix. Over the years I did what I could do. Some things positive, and at times negative.
It takes time... I have this feeling that by summer we should have it back. With that, let it flow, as slow as it is. We do have Sandy, TM, Dr Singer, KD, kyle, etc...
Hos and RTE are sitting on the side. I wish more would come, as in AKAGeorge, etc... but give it time. Way back when, some of us (me) was not very nice. Time hheals all wounds, but the fact that we are posting here is a good thing.
Judi: Sun Mar 2, 03 at 01:44:23 PM (EST) - let it snow, let it snow...
Weee, here we go again.. Gosh it sure is pretty here, all white.
So is this BBS a GO or a NO? Looks to me like there is major lack of interest in daily interraction. However it sure came in handy when Thomas was ill. I guess it was slightly better than an e-mail chain letter. So what is the soultion? More membership? Contacting AKA Mary for her stamp of approval? Maybe most of you are just too busy with "Real Life" to be bothered writing stuff here? I am losing interest quickly when I check back several times a day to see NO NEW MESSAGES.

Thomas More: Tue Feb 25, 03 at 10:44:05 PM (EST) - End of April?
Hi Mr. Jones; By the end of April, I should be good as new. However, I don't suppose I'll be attending the festival. But I agree the thrill of a multi-stage event is hearing a performer that you weren't aware of who really knocks your socks off.
Last year at Doheny Blues I was more thrilled to see Marsha Ball perform than B. B. King, whom I'd seen several times before.
np; Elmore James, "Rollin' and Tumblin'" from his CD, "The Sky is Crying."
Jones: Mon Feb 24, 03 at 04:16:16 PM (EST) - Besides which ...
I know you would dig Ben Harper and Gomez, both of whom are on Saturday's bill.
All this with the assumption that you're feeling up to par come the end of April, which we all most decidedly hope you are.
Jones: Mon Feb 24, 03 at 02:58:22 PM (EST) - Coachella
THOMAS MORE: I admit, the temptation is strong at Coachella to drift toward the stages where the familiar acts are playing, but I've found that the best part of going to that event is in the discovery of artists you had no prior clue about.
I've seen Sonic Youth four or five times. I've never seen the B-Boys, but I know what they're about and so will the 10,000 other crowding the main stage when they're on. This year I'm going to focus as much attention as possible on the stages and tents where something unknown to me is going on. If you do come, and I hope you do, I'd recommend that approach!
Rodger: Mon Feb 24, 03 at 01:15:28 AM (EST) - Dokken, Whitesnake, Scorpions@Universal Amphetheater
I pretty much gave up on heavy metal when it deteriorated to a bunch of follow the leader Motley Crue wanna be's, but was more into it during my adolecense (even though they did not play very much heavy stuff on WXRT which is the station that taught me to love music. But another really cool station was Triad which was an underground progressive station that was only on the air 4-5 hours a night at WXFM until the middle of 1977. WXFM was a station that had a brokered format (airtime went to those willing to pay for it). Triad played all sorts of cool stuff including jazz-rock fusion, folk, and of course, rock 'n' roll. They were the first station in Chicago to feature The Scorpions in their playlist. This was back in the mid '70's when they were primarily unknown. And I liked their stuff enough to purchase their first 5 albums. Their 5-th album is Lovedrive which is the first one to become popular with the masses. Still have them, but they are on vinyl. So after about 27-28 years after I became familiar with their stuff, I finally seen them live. They still rock. Was quite impressed with the show and enjoyed myself. The two warm up bands were pretty good as well. Liked Dokken better than Whitesnake, but that is probably because Whitesnake is a little too heavy metal for my taste. But, of course, the Scorpions blew away both opening acts.
Thomas More: Sat Feb 22, 03 at 10:39:05 PM (EST) - Hi Rodger;
Jak Beni; Jak Beni; Jak Beni!
Thanks, Rodger. I'm feeling much better. I kinda wish Sunshyne had waited to share the good news about my recovery, but on the otherhand I needed your support.
I saw the Cochella lineup in our local paper today. I'd be more interested in the 27th bill, too since it includes some bands I've actually heard of.
However, I'm on concert restriction for about a month.
Tiki; I'll share some of the prayers offered for me, for your Aunt Malana. If the physicians say there's nothing more they can do, you may wish to consult this book (see link below). It contains several interesting reports, one where Edgar Cayce found a different cause, and an effective remedy, for an intestinal condition that had been diagnosed as inoperable cancer. Actually it was an impacted small intestine, which could have been just as fatal as the cancer, had it not been properly treated.

Rodger: Sat Feb 22, 03 at 07:24:32 PM (EST) - Jones
Seen an advertisement for the Coachella Music and Arts Festival and am considering going. Looked at my schedule and the 27-th, I may not be able to make it (which is too bad since I wouldn't mind seeing the Red hot Chili Pepers), but the 26-th is open for me. If I go, I might see ya there.

Contemplating on taking a trip to the east coast during the second half of June. Father's day weekend, I will be attending Live Oak Festival up near Santa Barbara and, if I do take this trip, will head out to the east coast to visit friends after the festival is over. Had my hard disk die on me, so I lost your E-mail addy. If you write me, I'll have it again and maybe I can arrange to see you in Maine if I do go ahead and make the trip.
Rodger: Sat Feb 22, 03 at 07:14:34 PM (EST) - Welcome Back Thomas!!!!!
Its good to see you doing better and back in the room again. Called your place Friday night and spoke w/ Diane who said you were taking a nap at the time. At this point, getting your rest is more important than me chatting with you, so we agreed to just leave you alone. She told me to call back some time next week during the day and I probably will do so. Once again, real nice to have you back.

Judi: Sat Feb 22, 03 at 02:09:00 PM (EST) - for the record
I'm running OSX.2 and I also have iLife and Keynote so all the newest goodies. I love the screen savers, I'm annoyed that Netscape only seems to run in OS9 since I refuse to use IE. And my old favorites such as simpletext and stickies are so darn hard to locate. I could do without the silly shoot em up games that came supplied and why not include my favorite solitaire game instead? However I'm plodding ahead, learning the ropes on a messy wet cold day. And I hear you have it worse, earthquake? I'll take my ice thank you.
Judi: Sat Feb 22, 03 at 10:02:47 AM (EST) - this 'n that
Prayers being said for you and your Aunt.
The new computer- I have been dreaming of a laptop for quite some time, however since I have NO INCOME I was reluctant to just go out and buy myself such a gift. So I have been saving gift money for over 2 years now and I found some extra cash in giving pedicures (ick!) to family members who really needed them. Bottom line is that MacWarehouse was having this "iBook blowout sale" for $899 (while supplies last) and I jumped at that offer. It is the basic model, 600MGH G3 12" display,CD, with OSX. I even passed up the opportunity to get the free (pay installation charges) Ram upgrade, Free Printer (and I don't even own a color printer) and free Targus carrying case! I had $900 to spend and that was my bottom line. But it is awesome, loaded with all the software I'll need and now I can finally give up my G4 desktop to my husband who was always hogging it anyway.
Hints for nightclubbing: stand at the exit door, coat in hand ready to leave at the first hint of trouble.

My Aunt Malana it seems has a very bad cancer. We are hoping that they cut out most of it.
If you could say a little prayer for her... tonight
Thomas More: Fri Feb 21, 03 at 05:54:38 PM (EST) - Nice metaphor, kyle
I love it when you talk technical.
Tiki; Thanks for your good wishes. I'd doing o.k., but I have to take it easy for about a month.
God; I'm going to miss Walter Trout at Kozmo's next week and Marsha Ball + Pinetop Perkins on Feb 28 at The Blue Cafe in Long Beach.
If you've never seen Marsha Ball do "Play With My Poodle," it would be well worth your time to make it down to Long Beach on Fri Feb 28. She is a dynamic entertainer and also plays piano with a passion.
I must agree that seeing Marsha perform would not be good for my recovery. ( ;^ )

Thomas More: Wed Feb 19, 03 at 11:13:27 PM (EST) - NP:
Forgot to add my "NPs" (now-playing) Here's a mini-review:
NP: Big Joe Williams, singing the title track from his CD "Sugar Mama," on Blue Dog records.
This CD was a gift from a local guitarist known hereabouts as RTE, and I must confess that upon first listen I thought it was a throw-away. It sounded too much like the record company bosses had put some old bluesman in a hotel room and recorded him singing and playing a very primitive style of Mississippi blues.
Mostly rhythm licks on the guitar, and not much of a voice, but after listening more carefully, I could tell that what this recording offers is the feeling of the blues, ragged time and jazz, too. He plays the time, as well as the music, and is credited as an influence by John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, and as a contributor to the later "Chicago" sound of post-war bluesmen.
Rating: * * * * I'd have to give it four stars for historical significance, and good tunes, too, like the title track and "Baby Please Don't Go," among others.
Thomas More: Wed Feb 19, 03 at 10:37:43 PM (EST) - Thanks for all of your support
SRF, kyle & Tiki; thanks for the good wishes. Thanks also to Judi, who spread the word, and Sandy and HoS, who came by the hospital on Sunday, when I was still in never-never land. But I knew who the beautiful fresh flowers were from, because I had one eye open part of the time.
I was reminded today that when you're feeling down and wondering why something bad happens to us, there's always someone with a much greater tragedy to deal with. One of the replies to Diane's emails about my heart attack came from the nephew of an old friend from England whom I worked with back in the '70s, when he was Fleetwood Mac's tour manager. His nephew explained that my friend Phil wouldn't be in the office (where he gets his email) for awhile because his 19-year-old daughter had been murdered the week previous. This in relatively low-homicide London. Doesn't lend much credance to the prohibition of guns they enjoy there.
Tiki: Wed Feb 19, 03 at 07:19:58 PM (EST) - Thomas

I'm at home, resting. Saturday night I developed a clog in a coronary artery. Fortunately they can fix that nowadays. They inserted a stent, which is a tiny coil spring to prevent the artery from closing again.
I had a similar occurance once before, in 1995. Then, they just inserted a tiny balloon to open the artery. That procedure is supposed to be good for five years, statistically, and I got almost eight.
In a month I'll get some tests to determine if bypass surgery is indicated.
Be sure to enjoy your life, every day, because no one's time is long.

Always sucks to have stuff like that happen. But, even I have to watch it since I've been diagnosed with mild high blood pressure. By the way, high blood pressure was what killed my maternal grandmother. This was back in the late '20's before they knew much about it. She was fed a lot of high salt soup back then thinking it would help. Instead, it was what probably cost her life.
Anyway, I did send an E-mail to Sunshyne to send him my wishes for a fast and full recovery. I prefer hearing good things about my friends and am with the rest of us wanting to see Tom healthy and back in this room with the rest of us.

I planned a lovely Autumn week visit with my son in DC and that was the same week the snipers planned their vacation there. It was duck and run for a few days and then I felt as you did, there is NO PLACE like home! I plan to "stay put" right here in the little house in the big woods, surrounded with good books, good wine, good food, good tunes and the world at my fingertips. Kids want to see me? They can come here!

I wish I could send some my "heat" your way....
On a cheerier note, I just returned from a long weekend visiting with my offspring. Four days gone to the Bay area was waaaay fun. Things I learned:
1. Underwire bras WILL set off the metal detectors at the airport.
2. The BART has the most incomprehensible change and ticket machines. ( if they're even working)
3. It's hard to find bad food in SF.
4. Your kids' friends will appear out of the woodwork if you offer to pop for dinner out.
5. It's impossible to thoroughly shop Amoeba Records in the Haight.
6. Someone had the cojones to steal the Haight street sign at Haight/Ashbury.
7. Younger son has been keeping Cal State Sonoma in Rohnert Park a secret because it's way too fun there for him to be getting a decent education.
8. Wine tasting is too much fun to be wasted on Marin County yuppies.
9. There's no place like home, there's no place like home.
Judi: Fri Feb 14, 03 at 03:53:36 PM (EST) - AKA
...not a word, but no doubt she is frozen solid like most of us here in the Northeast this winter. It has been the winter from hell, this morning it was -16F and has warmed up to a lovely 4F under a crystal clear blue sky. We all have had more snow than normal, long stretches of below zero days and are suffering with cabin fever, and a bad case of the crazies. It takes great effort to get out of bed in the morning, the cars freeze, roads are slick and just the act of keeping the house warm is a major chore. AKA has to deal with her job, the commute to work, and caring for her mom. Perhaps she has just had enough computering for a while and is taking time off for a 'real life'. Send warm thoughts her way. And carry on, she would want us to do just that..

Sandy, now is the time to audition for "Am I HOT?" the new TV craze sweeping America. You'd be a sure 'fire' winner.
Sandy: Fri Feb 14, 03 at 02:17:45 PM (EST) - Why?
Does "Too busy having hot flashes" count? Who turned up the furnace?
Judi: Fri Feb 14, 03 at 09:36:09 AM (EST) - R.I.P-D.O.A.-M.I.A.?
Do these accurately describe this BBS? Time for a poll to find out why so little participation on this board. Top 10 reasons few post here

5___computer crash...firewall problems at work...lost my computer privlege after that porn incident, forgot to bookmark the URL
6___The cat ate the computer mouse
7___miss the good old days of the long Stefan rants
8___BBS is so 'last year'... text messaging and IM is the way to go!

Rodger: Mon Feb 10, 03 at 01:17:34 AM (EST) - Deep Purple
Did get around to watching my Deep Purple DVD and it made me feel old. You can definately tell the guys in the band are quite a bit older now (dare I say middle aged). Another DVD I watched today was my Sex Pistols DVD. Johnny litton (formerly Johnny Rotten) looks more like a conservative old man than an ex-punker. Oh well! Too bad we can't stay young forever.
Rodger: Mon Feb 10, 03 at 01:12:22 AM (EST) - How Many LS fans can you fit into a phone booth?
Last night's Los Straightjackets (LS) show brought that question to mind. Far too small of a venue for a band of their following (I've been told they packed tha Galaxy Theater before). Was talkint to the person to my left who got a kick out of my phone booth comment and felt when LS played at the Mint in West LA, that venue was way to small. Well the Mint is the size of a castle when compared to the Doll House. If I ever go back to that venue again, I'll have to get there early to get a good seat.
