Don't forget, a week from tomorrow (Saturday) is your chance to eat barbecued ribs, chicken or steak, with Walter Trout for desert.

This is all happening at Tumbleweed's Western Saloon and Barbecue, in Huntington Beach, on Feb 28. It's on Beach Blvd. at Atlanta Ave., about a mile inland from the beach (first signal).

Wear your dancing shoes.

Sorry don't know the flack, but I also enjoyed the article. 103.1 is getting a lot of well-deserved press. BTW, I was listening last night and spot loads around 8:50 pm are around 5-6 yikes!! The air time is selling...

Dr. Larry: Fri Feb 20, 04 at 03:47:14 AM (EST) - Interesting reading....

Thomas: Your mention of the Register article sent me searching...and while I couldn't get that article without a password/subscription, I did find this EXCELLENT article from the LA weekly with lots of background and inside information: LA Weekly article

Thomas More: Fri Feb 20, 04 at 12:40:34 AM (EST) - Hi Dr. Larry!

Oh, the spammers are going to get your email addy! (see post below from Tiki Webmaster)

I recall that when you were single (eligible?), there were a bevy of beauties willing to give you a ride (so to speak), but I suppose you've let them all go since you've wed.

I saw Neil Young's "Greendale" show at The Greek Theater last year, when that tour first started. It should be well mellowed after touring around the country for a year. It's a really good show, and if I hadn't seen it already I'd be inclined to join you. I hope someone who hasn't already seen it will take advantage of your offer.

Thomas More: Fri Feb 20, 04 at 12:32:31 AM (EST) - FM 103.1 "Indie Radio" in the News!

Front and back page of "Life, etc." section of today's O. C. Register reports on "Indie Radio's" new format. The headline reads "Sound Salvation - An FM station switches from dance music to alternative rock, looking for a slim slice of a vast audience."

Now that Orange County is so famous to have a Brit tv doc as well as the fictionalized (Hollywoodized?) version, I suppose the O. C. Register will be quoted often in the eastern press.

SRF probably knows the flack who wrote it.

Losing the email feature is fine by me. I routinely do NOT post my email addy in any place I chat. I spell it out as you suggest, if I need to put it there.... and if they allow the poster to go back and edit, I go back and delete it after it's been read. Sorry you're being plagued by those 'bots.

Tiki Webmaster: Wed Feb 18, 04 at 10:15:27 PM (EST) - What is this .htaccess

There are some nifty web pages out there that kind of explain the concept. A quick search in Yahoo, or what ever rocks your boat, will give a better answer than me rambling.

One way to see how it works (the dreaded 404 page) is to type http://www.graphicpenguin.com/anything_you_want/test.html. Type in anything after the first / after http://www.graphicpenguin.com

And you come to a mirror home page. Outstanding!

Tiki Webmaster: Wed Feb 18, 04 at 09:57:49 PM (EST) - The E-mail Field

OK, I need some inpute from everyone.

Pease do not be shy!

Over the past few weeks, my logs have documented a rash of bot activity here. While I do my best to keep up to date on spam bots, (spiders that crawl web pages to harvest e-mail for spammers) I am losing the battle. I do not have enough time to update my .htaccess file.

In other words, I can not protect you 24/7 from receiving spam because you have posted your e-mail in the e-mail field.

My take is to strip every e in the archives and lose the e-mail field. If you need to post your e, you can just copy/paste into your post with out the mailto: tag. I would replace the @ with (at)!

Your call.

Thomas More: Sun Feb 15, 04 at 10:11:57 PM (EST) - Maybe Flying Blind will get the gig...

Our own Flying Blind followed Three Blind Mice in The Bluewater Grill last year, so perhaps they'll be one of the local bands playing at The Village Inn one of these Saturday nights.

RTE; are you listening?

Thomas More: Sun Feb 15, 04 at 10:06:49 PM (EST) - Mo' better blues...

Hi jakbeni; There was a nice article about Kevin Moore (Keb Mo) in the O C Register yesterday. He blamed his lack of recordings recently on the fact that he's been too happy to sing the blues.

Saw Three Blind Mice a week ago at The Village Inn on Balboa Island. What a nice room, and friendly locals. Good food, too! I thought it would be expensive and unfriendly, like some upscale joints in Newport Beach. I was pleasantly surprised, so I hope some of the other O C folks in here will give it a try (SRF, HoS and Sandy; take note!)

On Friday nights they have Greg Topper band, who nearly always has a stellar guest artist, and on Saturday nights they feature other local bands, or the acoustic level. Even 3BM were relatively subdued during their electric set

The Village Inn is at the end of Main Street on Balboa Island. The bridge to the island is at the south end of Jamboree Road. If you're on Balboa Penninsula, where the fun zone is, you'll have to take the ferry over to the island!

Shows upcoming:

Walter Trout and The Radicals! Feb 27 & 28 at Tumbleweed's Barbecue and Western Saloon, Beach Blvd. at Atlanta in Huntington Beach. I'll be there early on Saturday night to eat some ribs! I hope to see some of you there!

jakbeni: Sun Feb 15, 04 at 08:59:46 PM (EST) - Keb Mo @ House of Blues - Disney

This was my Frday night concert. Totally different crowd than Deep Purple, but it was a great show. Keb had a good band with him and enjoyed hearing some great blues done by them. He did 2 encores and started the second encore with one of my Keb Mo favorites "You Can Love Youtself". Being the ultimate loner, I appreciate hearing that song.

jakbeni: Sun Feb 15, 04 at 08:55:38 PM (EST) - Deep Purple/Thin Lizzy @ The Wiltern

Was fun seeing these blasts from the past. Warming up was Thin Lizzy. These guys still look like old school rock N rollers and still got their long hair. Did some of the stuff they realeased back when I was in high school. For example, they opened with "Jailbreak" Did some unfamiliar stuff with stuff I recognized (believe I only have their first 2 albums). Other song I reconized where "Bad Reputation", "Emerald" (to this day, whenever I cross Emerald Street in Torrance, I always think of that song), and "The boys are back in town?. Then Deep Purple came on and they have a new album called "Banannas" They also did some old stuff, including the entire "Machine Head" album live along with other songs including "My Woman From Tokoyo", "Strange Kind of woman", and they closed thier encore with "Hush". It was fun hearing this old stuff done live.

“Soft-Singing Byrds Make Opry Debut Smashing Success Here” The Byrds of “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Turn, Turn, Turn,” and “Eight Miles High” fame were in last minute preparation for their Grand Ole Opry debut Friday night. Their road manager held a cigarette to the lips of Chris Hillman while he stood and played his electric bass. An unidentified man suggested that, for the sake of public relations, they use the current number one song, “Sing Me Back Home,” for their encore number. The boys had other ideas, and even after the MC introduced that song, guitarist Graham Parsons announced a change of plans and began instead to play “Hickory Wind,” a very pretty and very country tune. In performance the Byrds were a far cry from their earlier days. The unbearable volume of amplified instruments, which has impaired the hearing of stalwart Byrds fans in the past, was gone. In its place was the lazy twang of steel guitar and three very pleasant voices, actually audible over the accompaniment. Both “Hickory Wind,” and ãYou Ainât Goin Nowhereä drew polite but unenthusiastic response from an audience which only minutes before has cheered heartily for the Glazer Brothers and displayed unabashed adoration for Skeeter Davis. Backstage again, Parsons, who is from Florida, was visited by three youngsters, his ãTennessee kinfolk..ä They hovered proudly around their cousin, who has been with the group only a month. Pleasant, soft-spoken Rodger McGuinn is one of two original Byrds still with the group. He was once the ãfourth memberä of the Chad Mitchell trio, accompanying them on banjo and guitar and has also played with the Limelighters and Bobby Darin. His name has always been Jim McGuinn until last year when he became a follower of the Subud spiritual organization, which revealed to him that his true name is Rodger. Curly-haired Chris Hillman, the other original Byrd, was fairly reserved. He did say that he got his start playing bluegrass mandolin and that he hates the groupâs latest single release, ãGoinâ Back.ä Asked what other performers the Byrds admire, Hillman replied, ãThe Everly Brothers.ä ãHalf Country, Half Spaceä Kevin Kelly, the youthful drummer, has been with the group since January when original drummer Mike Clark left. Two other charter members of the Byrds are no longer around. David Crosby ãbought a boat and is sailing around out there somewhere,ä and Gene Clark quit after the release of ãEight Miles Highä to go solo, then rejoined the group recently for about two weeks and quit again, since, according to McGuinn, his refusal to travel by plane made it impossible for him to keep up with the groupâs heavy schedule. Prior to their Opry performance the Byrds had been in Nashville for a week of recording at Columbia studios. The results of their efforts are nine new songs to be included on a forth-coming, as yet untitled, two-record album, which producer Gary Usher describes as ãhalf country, half space.ä McGuinn explained further, saying that one disc of the set will be entirely country and western music, the other ãElectronic Music.ä This second half of the recording is to be done later in Hollywood. ãDirty Commiesä Following their appearance at the Opry, the Byrds came to Vanderbilt. The studios of WRVU were crowded with onlookers as each member of the group played disc jockey and answering service during an informal interview conducted by Gary Scruggs and Speed Hopkins. ãWeâre not gonna work in Washington,ä McGuinn said with a grin to Scruggs. ãWe refuse to work in a place where there are such terrible things going on.ä In reply to a telephoned question, Parsons said that he feels that the next sound in pop music will be an ãexploitation of country music.ä One caller who accused the Byrds of being ãdirty Commiesä turned out to be Hillman phoning from downstairs. After half an hour the tired but still-smiling foursome excused themselves to catch a plane to the University of Virginia for a Saturday night concert.

More on Steve Jones - Punk lunches are coming to “Indie 103” next week. Steve Jones, guitarist, writer and one of the found members of Sex Pistols will host a live lunchtime show at the new Modern Rock station, according to an announcement by pd Michael Steele. The show will be called “Jonesy’s Juke Box” and Steve will play and say whatever he wants. Friends from the world of Punk Rock will be frequent guests. He plans to play cuts from his own private collection; everything from the 45’s he bought as a kid, to the cool new stuff that gets him excited today.

“You have never heard a show like this,” said Michael. “It’s anarchy in L.A. Steve Jones basically INVENTED Punk Rock, and now he’s gonna be a dj on Indie - Somebody pinch me! I am such a fan and I can’t wait for our listeners to get an insiders view point on the REAL world of Rock, and hear MORE music that NO ONE plays on the air anywhere. ŒJonesy’s Juke Box” may not be pretty but it will definitely be compelling radio!”

Tiki Webmaster: Sun Feb 8, 04 at 07:44:39 PM (EST) - Now replace eBay with PayPal

Do not ever use a URL Link in an e-mail to get to your PayPal Acc. Just type in paypal.com. Do not take a chance!

Tiki Webmaster: Sun Feb 8, 04 at 07:39:11 PM (EST) - Phishing

I have no clue if that link is legit. I use and love my PayPal Acc. Linked to my ATM (Bank) as well as a CC. I am sure we all know that the seller of goods (when using your PP Acc.) only knows he is paid — and not XXX XXXX XXX 1234. (You do know that?)

What you do need to worry about is Phising.. Those e-mails that come out of the blue asking you to update your info. As a webmaster, I receive this Phish Carp quite a bit on my POP3's — yet I have not received one on my PayPal e-mail... Ergo be careful... They are Phising.

eBay’s (who now owns PayPal) Take (post on the eBay Boards)... Please read...

---------------------------------

Some community members have received deceptive emails claiming to come from eBay. Fraudsters who send these emails hope that recipients will reply or click on a link contained in the email and then provide personal information (i.e., eBay passwords, social security numbers and credit card numbers). We refer to these emails as “Spoof Emails.”

Tiki notes: AKA Phishing

We encourage you to be cautious when responding to any email request for personal information. Remember, if you are ever asked to provide information to eBay, you can simply open a new browser, type www.ebay.com, sign-in, and use the Site Map to navigate the site.

You can also take a few simple steps to protect your account and prevent senders of spoof emails from doing harm:

1.Be sure you are on an eBay page -- It is generally not a good idea to click on links in an email. However, if you do, be sure that you are signing into a genuine eBay web site by looking at the address/location area of your browser. At an eBay.com sign-in or log-in page, the URL (link) that appears in the address/location area of your browser will begin with "http://cgi.ebay.com/", "https://scgi.ebay.com/" or "http://signin.ebay.com/". Please pay close attention to all characters in the address, including the forward slash (/) that follows "ebay.com". Even if the address/location includes the word "ebay", it may not be a genuine eBay web site.

2. Report Fraudulent Email -- If you have any doubt whether an email is from eBay, use your email client’s “forward” feature to forward a copy of it to spoof@ebay.com immediately with full header information, if possible. If you have already replied to the fraudulent email, contact your bank and/or credit card companies immediately to prevent identity theft.

3. Check Your Account -- eBay recommends checking your My eBay and Account Preferences periodically to ensure that no one has tampered with your account.

Your vigilance helps us ensure that eBay remains a safe and vibrant online marketplace. For more information on how to protect your eBay password and your account, please visit the eBay Security Center. You can access the Security Center by clicking on Help from the Navigation Bar at the top of every eBay page, then clicking on the "Security Center" link.

Mr. Dr.: Sun Feb 8, 04 at 03:48:09 AM (EST) - Music as Fakes

Mabye you didn't read between my lines. I'm not planning on using my Paypal account for a scam. I'm just trying to see if anyone has any information on this. I ended it by saying "if it seems too good to be true..." I should have completed the sentence saying "...it must not be." Don't worry...THE money won't be used for any "scam". Thank YOU very much.

Mrs. Dr (aka tea): Sun Feb 8, 04 at 12:11:09 AM (EST) - Fakes as Music (hmmm...)

Wasn't that already posted? Oh no, I'm sorry, that was about Janet Jackson's breast. Uhhh, Dr. Singer, before you go doing anything rash (like using your PayPal for a scam), can WE talk about it first? My vote is NO! Thank you very much.

Dr. Larry: Sat Feb 7, 04 at 07:44:28 PM (EST) - CHEEP online music
lsinger9404@cox.net

Alright...first one to find out anything about this site Club MP3 Search regarding its legitimacy and safety, wins a prize. I'll reimburse you for your first downloaded song (all 1.9 - 3.2 cents worth). Then, you'll be my guinea pig using YOUR Paypal account to see if it's legit. I already found someone at BroadbandReports.com saying that it WAS legit, so that doesn't count. (actually, they may be a shill). They're cheep songs, cheep albums, and you get to preview the WHOLE track. I also found some articles that say the Russians are known for putting up fake Paypal sites. When I went to the Paypal page, it acted like I had a cookie and filled in the e-mail and password. You know what they say, though...if it seems too good to be true...

ACK... I loved the first movie!

Not sure why I am posting this... ;)

Judi: Fri Feb 6, 04 at 02:03:37 PM (EST) - Sandy

Glad you enjoyed that movie too. I'm always on the lookout for movies that can be rented that I can show at the assisted living place. Movies that won't offend or shock the old folks and that can be enjoyed even if you can't see or hear all that well. They liked Finding Nemo too. I now have Bridget Jones Diary but I'll have to pre-screen that first. I also picked up a documentary on Mystic Seaport. There is a limit to how much Bingo and solitaire they can take in one week so I try to provide entertainment when I can. I just bought the jumbo tin of dominoes at Wal Mart and next week I'll see if I can get a few more folks interested in that. They have an activities director who is worthless. Gives me something worthwhile to volunteer at and also gives me quality time with my folks.

Sandy: Fri Feb 6, 04 at 01:27:24 PM (EST) - Judi

I'm right behind you, my dear. I'm 50 this year with 26 and 22 yr. old sons. Thank goodness we're almost done with the tuition bills.

Per your recommendation I watched "Winged Migration". I loved it. Don was unmoved.... "how many birds can a person watch...?" he commented. Younger son works in a video store while going to school... and says he's thoroughly tired of it because they show it all the time - they can only run movies fit for family viewing in the store.

Judi: Fri Feb 6, 04 at 01:13:28 PM (EST) - "sanitized for your protection"

Super Bowl was SUPER from a New England fan's point of view, didn't watch the halftime show, I put on a party at the assisted living place and had to go clean up the leftovers at halftime. I was not terribly impressed with any of the commercials this time, I expect to see fantastic state of the art productions but thought they were bland. The AOL ones were terrible. The only ads I actually liked were the anti drug ads as they are at least thought provoking.

It is snowing finally after a long time of all the storms going out to sea south of Maine. About time!

My oldest son turns 30 tomorrow, I'm in shock at having a kid that old. And he is in Egypt for 10 days compliments of Oracle, well it is a working vacation but to see the pyramids and attend a camel auction... how sweet is that?

SRF: Thu Feb 5, 04 at 12:17:50 PM (EST) - Super Commercials not

At first I thought the flatulent horse was funny, but in retrospect, I have reconsidered my sophomoric tendencies (hehe) and I agree that commercial stepped over the line. One of the best was the Jimi Hendrix as a little boy Pepsi commercial. WHEW That was a close one!!

I too missed the boob shot, was out of the room at my Super Bowl house party , but viewed it at real time (and slo-mo) when I rewound the video tape. Also saw the CLOSE UP on LARadio.com site. Would give you guys the link but it won't work because you have to be a subscriber to view. (the website that is hehe)

Tiki: Thu Feb 5, 04 at 12:31:50 AM (EST) - My Super Bowl Thoughts - Part One

Ahhh The Bra-Ha-ha (aka Justin should have gone for two)

It was a great Super Bowl

5 years by now, I will remember XXXVIII for the game — and not by a nipple shield. The girl is a Has Been. Another “Boob” in the Jackson Familia. LMAO... At the penguin house — our 15th Super Bowl Party — the sound was muted the moment spud rock bounced onto the stage. (note to spud rock: Chopping a hole into our nations flag may be kewl with gang bangers, and your ilk, but it is not kewl with the hard working folks in the 40+ group - Up Yours!) We missed it. If not for the fact that I taped it, I would have never seen her jelly bag. Yes, just my 2 cents here, implants.

Sad to say I am cold on the commercials we saw. Willie (HR Block) was hands down the numero uno, and a few bud lites hit an ok margin. Is it just me, but burning fart jokes do not make a great commercial. Show me your tatas, but hellow... We expected Apple (started the whole over-the-top commercial) to bounnce in with greatness, but alas... Pepsi/iTunes... snore...

Thomas More: Wed Feb 4, 04 at 08:41:59 PM (EST) - Janet's Boobylicious Display...

..., or "wardrobe malfunction," as they say in Hollywood! Hey, aren't you going to comment on the half-time show-it-all?

I loved Shelton's cartoon in The OC Register this morning. He's usually good, but here he shows a portly "CBS" with his pants down around his ankles, exposing the "MTV" garters holding up his sox.

Lot of meanings in that picture. Worth a thousand words, I believe.

Thomas More: Tue Feb 3, 04 at 09:28:12 PM (EST) - Fresh Trout!

Walter Trout will be performing at Tumbleweed's Western Barbecue and Saloon (corner of Beach Blvd. and Atlanta, first signal north of the beach), on Friday and Saturday Feb 28 - 29.

I'm planning to be there early on Saturday night for dinner, since they serve good ol' western barbecued ribs, steak or chicken (mad cow or bird flu, take your pick).

Y'all come.
