Rodger: Sat Feb 8, 03 at 10:23:04 PM (EST) - Re-Post
sorry about that. Here is a corrected re-post of what I had earlier
Thursday night, went to see Kasey Chambers
at the El Ray Theater. She put on a good show. Warming up for her were her father, Bill Chambers (who
also played lead guitar in Kasey' band) and Robinella
and the CC String Band Bill basically did a regular coffee house set and Robinella and the CC String
Band were very good country style string band from Nashville. Tried to get their CD while there, but
they sold out before I got there. Kasey Chambers was a lot of fun. I'd consider seeing her again when
she returns. A fun evening. Last night, I went to a small hole in the wall tavern in Burbank called
The River Bottom to see the humours novelty blues rockers
King Con. they have a rather small following,
but they are also very competent musicians, so I always enjpoy seeing them. and in a little bit, I will
be leaving here to go to The Doll Hut in Anaheim
to see Los Straitjackets. They always put
on a very good show.
Rodger: Sat Feb 8, 03 at 10:01:16 PM (EST) - Music Buying Spree
Got the new Los Lobos CD Good Morning Aztlan. Excellent CD feturing the usual Los Lobos mix of roots rock and music with a bit of spanish influence. Also ran out to Best Buy and bought a whole bunch of music DVD's that I still need to watch. The last spree I bought stuff from classic hard rockers Rush and Deep Purple as well as punkish stuff from The Butthole Surfers and a CD from Ben Folds Five. No comment yet an any of these DVD's since I still need to find time to view them.

It's been, what, 20 years since listening to the Surf Punks? Were they to punk (or surf) what The Tubes or Sparks were to rock and roll?... an off times satirical representation? They're not obvious like the Rutles or Spinal Tap ... but still ... The Spoiled Brats From Malibu I -- the real estate lady in the background cracks me up.
A friend burned both My Beach and Locals Only on a CD and gave me a copy; I've been enjoying it thoroughly.
Question: Is Dennis Dragon of the Surf Punks related to Darryl Dragon (of Captain and Tennille) and conductor Carmen Dragon?

Judi: Thu Feb 6, 03 at 08:05:35 AM (EST) - KD, Wake up
Yes KD, they do have the wake up calls from most if not all the shuttle missions. You have to poke around at that web site and enter in different mission numbers. I listened to them with RealPlayer and got goosebumps at the end of each song when the crew members responded to their choice of music and communicated with mission control. If you folks just read the list and didn't check the web site link you must listen to at least one song on their list. Each song can be played from start to finish in several formats for any computer type. Just be prepared for the voices at the end. A very eclectic variety of tunes.
KD: Thu Feb 6, 03 at 12:34:01 AM (EST) - I agree with Judi
That would make an interesting mix tape or cd. Do they have music for all the other missions?

This is my first extended exposure to Paul Weller. When is he playing the Wiltern? A bootleg cd huh?
I keep playing Illumination over and over, much like I did with a recent Brian Eno acquisition. It's not like it's grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and demanded to be heard or danced to (dance-dammit-dance / yowsah yowsah [gunshot] yowsahyowsahyowsahyowsah) ... More like a new friend; someone ... you know might have a rough edge or two, but that's ok, because they never drink cheap beer. Only the good stuff, because life is too short not to enjoy it while it's going down.

Music Legend Arrested In Connection With Homicide
UPDATED: 11:35 a.m. PST February 3, 2003
LOS ANGELES -- Music industry veteran Phil Spector was reportedly arrested Monday morning in connection
with a local shooting, according to authorities.
Shortly after 5 a.m. Monday morning, Alhambra police officers responded to a call from the 1700 block of S.
Grandview Drive regarding a shooting, according to the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.
When the officers arrived they discovered that a female had been shot inside the location, according to
authorities. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, identified by authorities as Phillip Spector, 62, was taken into custody and is currently being
detained at the Alhambra police station.
Spector created the "Wall of Sound" effect that involved overdubbing scores of musicians to create a massive
roar, which changed the way pop records were produced.
Among his session players, known as the "Wrecking Crew," were guitarist Glen Campbell, pianist Leon Russell,
drummer Hal Blaine and the late Sonny Bono, who learned the producer's trade under Spector.
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, Spector produced records for the Beatles, the Righteous
Brothers, the Crystals and Darlene Love.
Spector produced a string of '60s hits, including the Crystals' "Da Doo Run Run" and "Then He Kissed Me," the
Ronettes' "Be My Baby" and "Walking in the Rain," and Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" and
"(Today I Met) The Boy I'm Gonna Marry."
Spector married Ronnie Bennett, a member of the girl group the Ronettes. They divorced in 1974. He has five
children.
Spector's father, Benjamin, committed suicide in 1949. Spector later visited the grave and used the inscription
"To Know Him Was to Love Him" as the basis for a hit song.
Spector's last major album was "End of the Century," a 1980 collaboration with the Ramones. During the
session, the late bassist Dee Dee Ramone said Spector pulled a gun on the band.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward Ive climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hovring there.
Ive chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious burning blue
Ive topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And while with silent lifting mind Ive trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Ahhh... Netscape 6
The monitor set at a screen resolution of 1024/768
is not the problem. We design sites at that rez.
With powerBooks in mind. For some reason
Netscrape (not a typo) 6 treats 13 to 16 px size
as the same size. On version 4.72 the complete
opposite. IE as well.
For the time being, I have increased the leading and
added a little more width to the post area. I guess I
will load Netscrape 7 on this PowerBook (running 4.72
at the moment) and see what is up.
As it looks like eBay (if ever there was a bunch of nuts)
decided to fix my board (it was not broke). The
result appears that I can no longer access it with 4.72.
ARG... Just my 2 cents .. but I like 4.72 - I do not
like 6... Oh well

Judi: Fri Jan 31, 03 at 07:22:02 PM (EST) - -85? wow!
Kyle, you gave me a scare there! I saw the -85 degrees and figured "hell must have frozen over" in California. Oh you mean it was 85 warm degrees! Phew! You were almost talking Maine winter temperatures there. However today was the first day the temp got above freezing (32F) all month and stuff was dripping and melting and oh so lovely I opened the door briefly. Busy week for me, my son and his girlfriend moved out of a non-winterized camp and into a warm duplex and I had to "cat sit" and help move and finally tonight the cat is gone and all the boxes are out of my place. Life for all returns to normal. Except for the older son who is in London on business this week and flew his girlfriend over to London for "The weekend", amidst an ice storm and snow there virtually closing the city and airports. Hope he is having "fun". It's not my problem! PS: I think I figured out how to enlarge type size here.

Judi: Fri Jan 31, 03 at 07:56:36 AM (EST) - Not color blind
Yes I can see the darker colored fonts, but can someone explain to me how to make the font appear larger? I am using Netscape 6 on a 13" diagonal measured Apple monitor on my Macintosh G4 computer set at screen resolution- 1024/768. The text area where people have already posted is indent a little over an inch on the left edge then I see the line defining a text area a little over 5" wide and the rest of the area to the right is white space of almost 4". Either widen the text area or explain to me how to make the words bigger! All this squnting is giving me a headache.
And Mr KD, why has Sony blocked the songs but not the soundtrack? Waiting for the official release date of either the cd or movie? Well it worked because I'm itching to hear a new Mary Fahl tune..

Judi: Thu Jan 30, 03 at 11:59:47 AM (EST) - new movie about the Civil War
A new movie will be out next month called "Gods and Generals" and what has me excited is 2 songs from the soundtrack. Bob Dylan has written one song and my new favorite female artist Mary Fahl has the other. Mary has been around for a long time as lead vocalist of "October Project". I just recently heard about her when someone gave me a used "October Project" cd. I still don't understand why she isn't a huge hit but at least now with this new soundtrack she will be getting a bit more exposure. My AAA radio station, WCLZ, will be playing the 2 songs from the soundtrack next Tuesday during their "new music Tuesday "segment. I will be sure to be listening. Review to follow. Sony isn't allowing the 2 new songs to be heard on the web site but you can listen to the general soundtrack cuts from the album there.

KD: Wed Jan 29, 03 at 11:58:47 PM (EST) - I agree with Judi
The Dixie Chicks version was pretty good.
I hadn't really cared for the Dixie Chicks, until I better understood their musicianship, and the stand they took with their record company over royalities. (While under contract, made an album and shopped it around.) Then I started listening a little bit.
Takes a bit of a push for me to listen to country.

I also remember Josh Gruban (sp?) did a real nice job of the Anthem B4 Game 1 of Giants-Angels. Earlier that baseball season Anastasia did the WORST version prior to the AllStar Game, mangling the words as well as trying to be cool with a lot of soul... YUCK!!!
Robert Dillworth: Wed Jan 29, 03 at 10:39:23 AM (EST) - National Anthem
robert_dillworth@mac.com
well - I for one am interested in hearing any interpretive version of the anthem - but unfortunately MOST do bite the big one.
One of the best "modern" versions I ever heard was, believe it or not, Sung a capella to open a baseball game (world series?) by Huey Lewis and the News. Was stirring to hear that Wilson Pickett-ish lead and the bright crisp harmonies below him. WOW
Most others have sucked - I did like the Lou Rawls and Whitney versions - didn't hear the Chicks as I am not a sports fan so I went on a retreat that weekend (cheaper rates - everyone else was home!)

I think a close 2nd for the Anthem would be Whitney Houston's version sung before the 1991 Super Bowl with full orchestra and jets above. They played this version a lot in the days and weeks following 9/11
Judi: Tue Jan 28, 03 at 07:33:27 AM (EST) - National Anthem
Ok so I'm fussy about my National Anthem. I like the Dixie Chicks, they have lovely voices and sang their little hearts out Sunday. BUT, I have always felt it is an ANTHEM, it still bothers me when the National Anthem is sung in an interpretive manner, 3 part harmony of the anthem? The Dixie Chicks sung well and on key but needed to sing the song the way it was written. That is one song I don't think is open to interpretation.
I think the very best I've ever heard sing it was Lou Rawls ... did a fantastic job!!! Didn't try to 'doctor' it ... just sang it the way it was written ... GREAT! ... and I don't even want to think about what Rosanne did to it ... call it the extremes of the continuum ... he was even better, I think, than she was piss poor ...
But then that is my opinion, you are entitled to yours.
-11F in Maine this morning, sea smoke on the bay, sky an eerie shade of pink in the WEST, not the east. Lobster boats locked in ice at the docks, ice breakers trying to heep the harbors open for the oil tankers. Finally we get a real old fashioned WINTER our parents talked about from their childhoods!
Robert Dillworth: Tue Jan 28, 03 at 02:27:20 AM (EST) - Ti Batteries

have you had the battery fix for your flex problem done yet Poogie? The old Ti laptops have a problerm with FLEXION - when the unit twists ever so slightly the battery loses contact and has to be reseated. It was cool seeing Ozzie Osborne during commercial break of the game. Quite entertaining seeing him freak out when his family annouced they weren't the Osbournes, they're the Osmunds (and they transformed in from of his very eyes). Then when he told his wife about it, she turned to face him and talk to him and Ozzie freaked out again when she looked just like Mrs. Brady from the Brady Bunch. Too bad the game was very one-sided. Was rooting for the Bucs (after all those horrible seasons of past, the Tampa Bay fans deserve a winner). But would have at least like to seen the Raders make a game of it.

Last year, the hard drive crashed on my computer and I lost all my data. Since I was due for an upgrade anyway, I made my upgrade a few months early. Took my business to AllTech computers in Lomita since they repaired my old computer a few times and was always happy with the work they did. My new machine (roughly about 3 months old now) is a 1.4 Ghz Impression that came with a CD burner, DVD player, and a laser guided mouse. Been very happy with it. The laser mouse is super nice since it eliminates the problem of getting the track ball on the mouse gummed up. Judi - My first computer was a Mac. But got sick and tired of going to the computer store and finding very little software available for the Mac (most places had a large PC s/w available), so my next computer was a 133 MHz Dell, which wasn't a bad computer. But the one I have now really cranks.
I've gotten hooked on the DVD player, primarily the music DVD's I bought. For example, when I got back home last night after seeing the Cheftains at Cerritos center, I watched my Jimi Hendrix Live at Woodstock DVD. Great show. The best DVD I own is Live In Japan by the Brian Setzer Orchestra. He always puts on a fantastic show and his DVD is no disappointment. The weirdest DVD I own is Icky Flix by the Residents. From these guys, you wouldn't expect anything but weirdness from them. But I'm a fan of their weirdness and music, so I find Icky Flix to be quite enjoyable and amusing too.

This is the place to talk about all things Macintosh, right? Well... I've been working on my TiBook all day. Plugged into wall. Tonight I noticed the battery indicator said the battery was drained and it is not charging. Says no battery is available. What gives? Should I get a Dell? Any ideas?
