Dr. Larry: Fri Jan 30, 04 at 12:21:09 AM (EST) - 103.1 change

I don't know if it's changed for the PeeCee people, but Macs now have an amp as the 103.1 player, rather than staring at Windows Meia Player. I wrote to them when I wasn't connecting (at least in X, tiki said he was connecting in 9) and they said their Mac connection was down whole they were doing some tweaking. This is pretty cool.

It's been a LONG time that i've listened to radio regularly for a extended period of time!

Judi: Wed Jan 28, 04 at 08:47:33 AM (EST) - games

Tiki, Lately I have stumbled on to a wealth of games. I have a friend mailing me links weekly, usually none are of much use other than a laugh or 2. But then I was directed to a games site. Aptly named Addicting games So I tried a few of those for kicks, I'm not a big fan of games. But some led to more types of games that I did enjoy and finally to the blockbuster game site that would take me weeks to make even a dent in solving. I love challenges, this is sort of similar to Myst in that there are no directions, and the puzzles are hard mind games and most way above my head, such as advanced chemistry puzzles and creating music. I like puzzles that make me THINK and it also is a good way to pass time during these long cold January days. Time hunt and don't blame me if you get addicted to this one and NO I don't have any hints! Heck if you find hints tell me!

Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 28, 04 at 03:46:47 AM (EST) - Wes was the walrus

Check out this picture of Wesley Clark, eerily similar to the Urban Legend "Paul Is Dead" theory which purported that the hand above Paul's head was a symbol of death. Wes was the walrus

Tiki Webmaster: Tue Jan 27, 04 at 11:05:01 PM (EST) - Judi

Hit a 315 something... Where do you find these things?

OK folks... By any chance have you found some time to look over our NEW look? Any comments? Comments would be a good thing.

Tiki: Tue Jan 27, 04 at 10:55:43 PM (EST) - A 103.1 moment

Driving home they played “Corona” by the Minutemen. Parked my car on the side of the house, turned off the lights, and sat until the song ended.

Guess I had to pinch myself... 103.1 is not KXLU (I hope as time goes on they becomme a 1987 KXLU). And it looks like they are not KROT as well...

That was very kewl!

We still have much work to do. We need a Surf Instro Hour or so.. Call them and ask for one. Heck, they can cram it on Sunday....

Tiki: Tue Jan 27, 04 at 10:45:07 PM (EST) - Dr. Larry

not using Panther

Not on the G3 Pismo PowerBook... yet...

As soon as I have the cash, I plan on a this Upgrade and then I will put Panther on it.

TeeHee!!!

Dr. Larry: Mon Jan 26, 04 at 12:54:52 AM (EST) - Media Player

Hmm...I don't know why it would need to be updated when it's the same Wuindows Media Player I used when I first checked out 103.1.I'll try updating...

9.1? What...you're not using Panther??

Tiki: Sun Jan 25, 04 at 10:15:30 PM (EST) - Dr. Larry

103.1 is rocking on my PowerBook (OS 9.1) Maybe your Windoze Media Player needs to be updated?

Dr. Larry: Sun Jan 25, 04 at 04:55:43 PM (EST) - Macs locked out of 103.1??

Hey...any of you other mac heads encountering "Playlist format not recognized" when attempting to play 103.1?? on Windoze Media Player??

Judi: Sat Jan 24, 04 at 09:25:58 AM (EST) - play ball!

well Penguin baseball anyway. I promise no penguins will actually be injured in this sport, they find it fun and actually run back up the hill to try again. I have more misses than hits, but my top score was 288.8. Penguin Baseball

The year of the rat is lucky as well!

thomas more: Fri Jan 23, 04 at 09:45:30 PM (EST) - year of the monkey

Yes!

According to the Chinese/Vietnamese astrological calander, the lunar year that began Wednesday will bring great rewards to those born in previous years of the monkey!

So, if you were born in 1992, 1980, 1968, 1956, 1944, 1932, or 1920, get ready for the Gold!

Circles in the Sand -- Extremely Cool
If you have a broadband internet connection (& Windows Media Player) and about 10 minutes to spare, you MUST visit this link. It is one of the neatest things I have ever seen.
Before you go here, though, make sure you turn all the lights off in the room, turn the volume up on your computer and try to do away with all distractions. You will enjoy this. It's pretty amazing. Tip: Once you begin the video, enlarge it to full screen.
It took me a full hr to download on dial up at home but it was worth the wait. And it is safe viewing for all ages, family and work friendly viewing so don't panic!

Judi: Fri Jan 23, 04 at 11:55:54 AM (EST) - something different

Kathleen Edwards is the first ever to release a two sided cd. Side one is audio ..... flip it over and side 2 is a dvd. Pretty cool stuff. It's an EP called "Live At The Bowery Ballroom and it includes Kathleen's cover of AC-DC's "Money Talks". get more info here. Kathleen says that the cd will be hard to find in the store so online is really the way to go.

KD: Fri Jan 23, 04 at 12:48:07 AM (EST) - Perq's

Sorry I missed Walter Trout last weekend. Recovering (still) from what was going around at CES in Vegas.

Did see Santana and his 10-piece backing band. It was an excellent show. Herbie Hancock sat in. That was very cool.

Gung hay fat choy! Perhaps things will settle down enough for me to send out ... I'm not even going to say. np: Frosted

SRF: Thu Jan 22, 04 at 05:54:59 PM (EST) - Tiki

Ooops make that Bart Simpson, not Homer altho' Homer prolly would've done it too!

SRF: Thu Jan 22, 04 at 05:54:08 PM (EST) - Oh yeh

I get it har har!! :>) Have you ever seen that cartoon of Homer Simpson bending over and dropping his drawers?? Found it somewhere on the 'net a lonnng time ago.

Tiki: Thu Jan 22, 04 at 04:37:47 PM (EST) - SRF

Hmmm, how to say this...

Imagine the “O” with 3 lines above and 3 lines below... I guess you would have to see the type treatment they used in their ads.. ;) (get the picture? :) teehee

My use of the umlaut was a 1/2 a** attempt at that type treatment.

SRF: Thu Jan 22, 04 at 02:20:38 PM (EST) - YES network

YES network is temporarily down. On their website is this message:

We are enhancing YES! In the coming days we will add over 1300 radio stations. You may experience delays or inconsistent data until the end of the week when the changes are complete. Please bear with us and stay tuned!

BTW, I didn't know the Butthole Surfers get an umlaut!?!

np: Hooverphonic-2 Wicky on RadioParadise.com

Tiki: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 10:43:07 PM (EST) - Butthöle Surfers!

Albeit... The 2 tunes they have played would register on the conservative side (LOL we are talking about the BHS) to many faithful in the cult of Butthöle Surfers... But they just played their cover of Hurdy Gurdy Man.

Poogie: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 04:47:41 PM (EST) - DrLarry

i don't think you will be able to play 103.1 through iTunes. I just went to their web site and it requires Windows Media Player to stream. Won't work with iTunes.

SRF: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 04:41:32 PM (EST) - Dr.Larry

You are correct, I also noticed that little kink in the yes.net system. It's really only helpful when you need to know info and log the time you heard it, then check in yes.net a few minutes after. Actually, they were about one song behind when I checked the site yesterday. Also I noticed that as with all web streaming stations, the "stream" is always a 40-60 seconds behind the over-the-air broadcast.

Now, Larry, if you have Cox Cable,(I think you do) this past Thursday I phoned their marketing department to request them to change one of their MusicChoice radio station channels to Indie 103.1. They "broadcast" over Music Choice most of the main LA area radio stations including some of the non-comms like KCRW and KPFK. They used to broadcast Cool 94.3 until they went Spanish and replaced them with San Diego's My 94.1.

Please if you are a Cox cable subscriber, do me and every other fan of 103.1 a favor --- Call Ms. Aubrey Lewis @ Cox- 949-546-2517 and request they change from a San Diego station (the only one BTW they have on their system in OC) to Indie 103.1. If enough ppl call, maybe they'll add/replace and then reception won't be as much of a problem for some. I live in Mission Viejo and reception starts getting spotty at parts, especially at home! Even if you receive them loud and clear, please make the call anyway. The more calls they get, maybe they'll do something!!
It's good to see more activity on these White Walls (remember WW tires?). Nice to see the "community" is still around. Of course a new radio station that doesn't suck sure helps get interest stirred. Now where are the others- ACME, Zoetrope, et al??

PS-I predict in due time, a message board similar to this one will be available to fans of Indie 103.1. I also put in a request via e-mail to show the current song/artist playing on their website. WOXY 97X in Cincinnati area has such a list that you can keep up or minimize. They are a good station you're probably familiar with playing more new stuff than 103.1 but with much the same attitude. And to show you the SuperRadioFan has diversity in his radio station choices, np: Blur-Brothers and Sisters on RadioParadise.com.

Have a SuperRadio day, Larry!!

Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 03:19:56 PM (EST) - Yes, pt. 2

...and BRMC is still listed while R.E.M. was playing, and now Polyphonic Spree. It's a good idea...but not functional. And why not a small java window to move around your screen so you can be on a different page while the songs are listed in the background. just a thought...

Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 03:17:20 PM (EST) - Yes?

Well...that works...sort of. Yes, i'm aware they'll get DJs, and yes i've heard the listeners announcing. Yes is a good Idea...if it worked. When I checked, that Franco-Unamerican song was playing, yet Black Rebel Motorcycle Club was listed. And before you say, with a big grin, "What?? You want the song IDs to accurately reflect what is playing?"...well....yes. AND...it doesn't say anywhere on 103.1's page to look there. You just had insider info cause you're the Super Radio Fan.

SRF: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 12:14:16 PM (EST) - Dr.Larry

First off---GET TO BED LARRY!! :>)

You want song ID?? Geez how greedy can you get?? (VBG!!) Eventually they'll get DJs on 103.1 who will probably back announce the songs. And now they've added recorded phone drops from some listeners who "announce" the upcoming song. Maybe you've heard it. As for now--there IS a way to get song info. Key in www.yes.net. Station ID is KDLD and voila!! it'll give you the playlist of recently played songs- Artist first followed by title.

Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 03:42:53 AM (EST) - feedback

I just sent 103.1 a feedback about what I thought about the station. I suggest you all do the same so they know they're being heard.

Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 02:55:36 AM (EST) - Someon'e been busy a ripping!

Has anyone checked out the "Just Added" at iTms?? TONS of new stuff added...well, not "new", but recently added old stuff. Looking for Surf Punk's "My Beach"? It's there! I guess they're "stocking the store" for the big Pepsi/Super Bowl giveawy. And the cool thing is...there aren't a lot of "big names" on the list. Apple isn't going for the sure thing, but the rule seems to be diversity! Good for them!

Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 02:39:36 AM (EST) - There's my answer

The group that sounded like The Fall was Phantom Planet. Pretty cool inflences - if they consciously were influenced. I know oavement have sited The Fall as an influence.

Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 02:30:08 AM (EST) - Zeigarnik effect!

(that's when your brain keeps mulling over something you forgot til you rememeber it!) I just remembered the name of that damn "Dennis Hopper" song - "Rock-a-Bye". May Shawn Mullins burn forever in obscurity, one-hit-wonder hell! Channel imprinted that song on our minds every 3 songs when they first started out. It was like "Here's how we're going to distinguish ourselves!..here's a song no one else is playing!"

Well..the fact 103.1 just played Black Flag's "Louie Louie" (followed by something that sounds like the Cramps meet b-52's with Jello Biafra singing) is how they're gonna distinguish theirselves. I hate to say it, but I really don't see this format entering mass acceptance (look at the sales of White Stripes "Elephant" compared with, say, Sean Paul). HOWEVER...it DOES fill a void, and may be seen as a "loss leader" or mabye a "credibility earner" for a monopolistic corpration, much like record labels acquire popular artists who don't sell many records but have them on their roster just to bring credibility. Call this a "charity gesture" for the undernourished LA airwaves.

I sorta wish they'd announce the artists and songs, or at least give us somewhere to go look them up. I thought I heard The Fall earlier today, whom i've NEVER heard on mainstream airwaves.

Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 01:30:08 AM (EST) - playlists

SRF; Thanks for the playlists. There is some real diversity! and yeah...I remember the Costco encounter!

Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 21, 04 at 01:29:10 AM (EST) - iTuning in 103.1

As I don't want to rely on "the MAN"...have any of you Macheads figured out how to tune in 103.1 in iTunes. I go to Advanced -> Open Stream -> put in the URL..Indie 103.1 shows up in the "Playing" window...but nothing. What step am I missing.

Tiki: Tue Jan 20, 04 at 04:56:43 PM (EST) - 103.1

Take KROQ's flash back lunch - toss out 90% of the carp they play (ummm I guess they forgot what they used to play) - I know it has been 18 years, but please. Yes back then KROQ was after the 21 to 28 crowd, and they still are. But we are in our early 40s.

I really could care less who owns this station, as long as they keep playing the stuff I grew up with.

As I can not get KXLU (last time I was able to tune in I only could make out 30% of the stuff on the playlist, it is nice to hear Hüsker Dü, Minutemen, Black Flag, Replacements, etc... on the radio again!

Dr. Larry: Tue Jan 20, 04 at 11:21:36 AM (EST) - NAMM

MARY: I managed to get in to NAMM. I couldn't find Dennis, hard as I looked. The show was a BLAST!! It's always great going to shows where Apple is the RULE...not the exception. This is the same at the video shows. All the creative people are on Apples.

Dr. Larry: Tue Jan 20, 04 at 04:35:42 AM (EST) - Garage Band Rocks!

Oh...i meant to post about my fondness for Apple's new iLife app. It is incredibly simple for something as instrumentally inept as me to create a song. WOW!

Dr. Larry: Tue Jan 20, 04 at 04:22:07 AM (EST) - Shows

Oh...i've been blown away a few times the past couple of months. I went to all Tomorrow's Parties and saw band after abnd of great music, including the reunited Stooges. Last week I saw Banyan at DiPiazza's. For those not in the know, Stephan Perkins (jane's Addiction) with Mike Watt. I was 5 feet away fro greatness (Stephan Perkins that is)...he is amazing to watch if you ever have a chance to get up that close. A few weeks back, I saw Dos (Mike & Kira Watt with special guest Flea). February 20th, Zoey's Trip will be playing. Anyone wanna go?

Dr. Larry: Tue Jan 20, 04 at 04:17:29 AM (EST) - Question

So what is really "indie" about Indie 103.1 if they're owned by a corporate mionopoly giant playing (mostly) what can be found on corporate rosters?? Shouldn't we be hearing stuff you can buy in insound, epitonic, and cd baby (all great sources to find good indpendent music). Uh oh...Iggy & The Stooges are on! Streetwalking cheetah with a heart full of napalm!

Dr. Larry: Tue Jan 20, 04 at 04:06:34 AM (EST) - Radio's Back??
lsinger9404@cox.net

or mabye...Radio's Front?? I couldn't believe my eyes when I read Thomas's post a couple days a go. it took that long to sink in. I just checked oiut the website. The Clash! That works! ad it's a different mix of "Radio Clash". Granted, the station is still being run by Satan. But Satan IS the one who gave us sex, drugs, and Rock N Roll, right?? Well...let's keep our fingers crossed that they do it right (mix it up, introoduce us to new stuff, keep it fresh and new) rather than do it wrong (play 8 lame songs over and over (what was that Channel 103 song that mentioned Dennis Hopper??) mixed in with 1 or 2 good ones). I hope they truly DO earn the "Indie" name by playing INDIE artists...rather than what the record compnies line their pockets to play and what bands are conming to the arenas they own so they can sell tickets.

Alright..."Mongoloid" by Devo just followed P.O.D. That's 2 listenable out of 3 songs...not too shabby.

Hmmm...well, when i'm not listening to my lecture tapes preparing for the licensing exam, i've been plsaying my own KLAR via my wonderful new 40 GB iPod. On-The-Go Playlists rock!

Here we go again...White Stripes "Pretty Good Looking (For A Girl)" off an old White Stripes album...not the overplayed 1 or 2 songs (by KROQ) off the last two albums. And now Beck...I could probably get used to this.

Judi: Mon Jan 19, 04 at 11:37:06 AM (EST) - Sandy

No furnace so no problems! Actually we rely soley on our gas fireplace, looks like a wood stove, see the pretty burning "fake" logs? All runs on propane and by thermostat, power goes out we still have heat. Poor litle thing works 24/7 but keeps the place toasty warm. We still do not heat the upstairs and nights have been a challenge, but we turn on the electric blankets before bedtime and race up and jump into a warm nest of flannel sheets, down comforter and electric blanket cozyness. Actually one night last week when it was well below zero we opened the window a crack to listen to the wind battering the frozen trees. Snap! Crackle! Pop! but nothing more than a few brittle branches fell. My son did have a few pipes freeze in his duplex but the landlord fixed it pronto and there was no damage.
It's Winter! It's Maine! It is suppose to be cold! I have outerwear that covers me from head to foot and a nice brisk walk in sub zero weather is invigorating. However we need lots more snow, strawberry plants, apple tree roots and most plants need a good cover of 6" of snow to protect them and we have maybe 3" of snow now. It has been too cold to snow.
And the Partiots are off to the Super Bowl once again! That warms the hearts of the frozen New Englanders even more.

Sandy: Mon Jan 19, 04 at 11:08:19 AM (EST) - Judi

Sorry to hear of your loss of an old friend. Schooner Fare's not so local..... occasionally I've seen their cd's in used bins in So. Calif. .... they looked well-played, not discarded for lack of talent.

How are you faring in the frigid weather??? Hope your furnace is equal to the task. I have a friend in Lowell, Mass. that could only get her house up to 56F during the worst of the freeze.... her oil burner just wouldn't produce enough heat. Brrrrrrrrrr.........

Judi: Mon Jan 19, 04 at 09:14:25 AM (EST) - sad loss

A Maine music legend lost his battle with cancer this weekend. Many of you know I have spoken often of a local group called Schooner Fare, like Thomas and Mr Trout, we are loyal SF fans attending most of their local apperances. My husband also played in an early folk group with Tom and knows him well.

Thomas More: Sun Jan 18, 04 at 08:29:25 PM (EST) - FM 103.1

Hi all. I too have been listening to FM 103.1 lately, and while it's not 3A it's certainly a better "alternative" than KROQ.

For the past several months I've listened mostly to KLOS (FM 95.5), but I like most of what I hear on "Indie FM." Their Newport Beach transmitter is only a couple of miles from me, so it comes in really good. Not so for Tiki and RadioJones, who live in hilly areas.

There are probably several posts from Judi that are frozen in the wires, due to the extra-cold weather they've been having on the right coast. We'll get them all at once, I suppose, when the first thaw comes.

I've been nearly as avid a live-music fan as Rodger lately. Last weekend was Walter Trout Band at Perq's, about which I posted below, and last night (Jan 17) was The Melvin Eddy Blues Band at "The Players" club in Costa Mesa. Good Pizza at "The Players," and Newcastle Pale Ale on draught. Doesn't get much better than that.
