Judi: Sun Jan 26, 03 at 10:36:26 AM (EST) - what was your first computer?
The latest topic for discussion at ONF is:
What was your first computer?
My reply was this:
We bought 2 TI 99 2a computers. They connected to a tv for the monitior. Programs were saved on to ordinary audio tapes using a tape recorder. One had a speech syntheizer. My son stopped by the house yesterday and saw the box with one of the TI's in it and connected it to the tv to see if it still worked. It ran perfectly and he had fun playing with "Hunt the Wumpus", "Mash" , "Hopper", "Parsec", "Star trek", "Tombstone City" and even tried out "Multiplication 1". We also played around with programming in BASIC to see how much we remembered. He seemed to think that was more fun than his old Nintendo games.
But after that computer we moved on to the ADAM computer setup, then to Mac Plus, Mac 2gs, then Mac 2si, and then the big ones the Mac 8100 and the present Mac G4. We also own 3 Powerbooks, the real early model laptops. We have kept all the computers except the ADAM.
Tiki: Fri Jan 24, 03 at 10:47:02 PM (EST) - The list...
OK... AFAICT here is what the board needs... and in the order that I will punch them in.
1) The java*script stripper - In other words... A word stripper (some call it a bad word censor). The word "java*script" will not be allowed. Ergo, the children of the corn will NOT be able screw with the board. It can not be beaten.
This brings up the censorship topic. Every known racial slur will be added to this list of bad words (a .txt file). I do not see the need to add Carlin's 7 words to the mix... But I want to be up front with this. This Board has to work with out an active Webmaster monitoring at all times. To be honest, this board would not be up if I had to take that job again. I hope that you understand my position.
2) As Thomas pointed out adding <br> and <P> tags is a pain in the rear. ASAP, you will need to add the tags, just add white space. Pretty kewl...
3) The color of the background... I really like white... I was thinking that maybe a darker blue might work? But I will look into a cream color. LOL - Diane wanted a lime green color... oh my...
4) I will also make the columns wider... If all goes well, that will happen first, but we do have a KRAZY weekend. ((Go Raiders))
OK, if all goes well... this will be my last post where it looks like I am in charge... I do not want to be in charge. Thank You....
If I have missed anything for the "to Do" list, please post it.
Tiki: Fri Jan 24, 03 at 09:48:19 PM (EST) - Oh My! A link to this board!
LOL - I was hoping to get an extra week, as my to do list is a bit long..
;)
Rodger: Fri Jan 24, 03 at 08:17:37 PM (EST) - And its good to be back
Still see live music almost every weekend. Tonight, I'm bound for Pugs records for and early evening concert featureing electronic music by Surface 10. Tomorrow night, I will head to Cerritos Center to see the Cheftains, Next weekend, plan on seeing the Austrialian rock band Brother at the The Gig. Their brand of rock 'n' roll feartures didgeridgeridoo and bagpipes. Saturday, Feb. 1, plan to see Elliot Smith at the Henry Fonda Theater. When I seen Elliot a couple of years ago, it was at the Palace and I felt old since I was the oldest person waiting in line. After I got in, both the person seated to my right and the person seated to my left were older than me. I hit it off with the person to the right and at some point mentioned the audeince was quite a bit younger and that this must be the part of the Palace where us old geezers hang out. By the way, the only person I'm able to hole a grudge against in myself (Believe it or not, but that since I've always been hard on myself) and obviously I'm, not doing so tonight since I'm being good to myself by seeing some music.
Sandy: Fri Jan 24, 03 at 05:01:48 PM (EST) - Grudge? Fudge.
Judi's right, life's too short for grudges. I'll stop short of making this my personal blog..... but sure you can hear all the latest.
On a happy note, my wildflowers are in radiant, extravagant bloom, a riot of color. And the little pot of catnip I sowed before christmas is greening up nicely. I gave one leaf to Caffeine the Cat - she chewed it to a pulp and began rapturously rolling about on the patio. Any more and she'd have been begging to go to Del Taco. :)
Judi: Fri Jan 24, 03 at 01:28:04 PM (EST) - Life is too short for holding grudges...
But to be a member of anything it means you need to "participate". Not lurk, watch, stand on the sidelines, or post occasionally. No message or thought is too trivial not to share with old friends even if it is music, Macintosh or odd collections. Welcome back Robert! Welcome back Rodger and Kyle and Poogie and everyone lurking in the shadows.
SRF: Fri Jan 24, 03 at 01:25:48 PM (EST) - Hi there
Thanks to Rodger for giving me the heads up on the White Room. Thanks to Tiki for making this possible... Yeh, another room to spend my time on :>) When I have a little more time, I'll be back!!! Southern Califormnia radio still sucks, especially since the demise of Cool 94-3. I still spend my time listening to in no particular order: Bill Handel KFI; John & Ken KFI sometimes; Larry Elder KABC sometimes; and when I'm not listening to talk radio I listen to tapes recorded at home--Radio Paradise; Music Choice adult alternative/progressive channel. I've sampled THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP the new Dance station 103.1 KDL but this music wears thin. I'll take Tom Waite any day over that stuff. Tiki, have you heard Johnny Cash's version of "Personal Jesus"? What a hoot! BTW, was at Edison Field the day the World Champion Angels win Game 5 of the ALCS vs the Twins to qualify for the WS. Tiki, were you there?? One last thing, I'll alert a personal friend of mine about this board, you may remember him as David at USC. Later......... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~ ~~ ~~ .... ...

"in the white room - with blue letters - is a chat room..." Loosely quoted that is...
Nice to see everyone survived the meltdown - I didn't know there was one until I got Jon's e-mail on this new room. I am VERY glad to see many of you still here and still chatting. I have popped in and out over the last couple of years and have not been a regular poster, but I would like to think that Jon's sentiment of forgetting the past and making things work is for real - and I would like to come back into the fold in some small way. All prodigal sons come home again
Judi: Fri Jan 24, 03 at 08:44:46 AM (EST) - "collecting friends"
I posed the "collections" question to my friends at ONF, yes I'm still attatched at the hip with my old BBS. Women seem to be the biggest pack rats and some things other folks collect are way odder than my collectons. I feel less odd today. Tiki I agree on the framing, because another thing I collect are posters of places we visited, and I get those professionally framed and it makes a world of difference. However I have run out of wall space.
But back to your thought about a group gathering again. You might be interested to hear about another group that is planning the same event in Maine next October. I yack on and on about the little BBS from Maine, ONF, but it has become a worldwide family and recently a woman from Willits CA came to visit, a couple from Manhattan Beach CA, a man from Argentina stayed here a week but now in October we have plans to host 8-10 different folks from California, a guy from Sweden, another from England, a lady from Spain, folks from NYC, FL, AZ, NV, MI, Toronto, Brazil and loads of us from Maine will open our homes so they can stay for free so their only cost is the plane tickets here. October was chosen because they all wanted to see the fall foliage. So if a tiny free BBS from a small town in Maine can survive and grow to worldwide proportions where we all feel like family to each other and become so close as to want to visit in person, this "little penguin that could" spot on the WWW can do as well. My favorite collection is "collecting friends". There is still time for you all to join ONF, become part of our family and join the party to be held in Maine in October!

Rodger: Fri Jan 24, 03 at 02:23:03 AM (EST) - The return of KGSR to the web
Was excited a couple of weeks ago when one of the best AAA formats in the country returned to the web after approximately a 6 month hiatus from webcasting. The station is KGSR Austin, Texas. Give it a try and enjoy. It'll remind you of KSCA.

The second addy of course will lead you back here, but the link to Richard Wagoner's BB works.
Rodger: Fri Jan 24, 03 at 02:10:26 AM (EST) - The Room that Refuses to die
Good work Tiki! Radio columnist Richard Wagoner put up a message board at his web site Richard Wagoners BB. In case HTML does not work, here's the addy again "http://www.graphicpenguin.com/forum/". I posted the addy to this room there. I will also write SRF who I recently exchanged E-mails with becuse we swapped messages at Richard's BB.

Tiki: Fri Jan 24, 03 at 12:47:07 AM (EST) - My 2 cents
Thank You everyone for bouncing in. I see no need to bring up the crap of the past... But way back when, we all were friends. I hope that time heals all wounds... I hope that we still are friends... I hope that everyone is spreading the word, and in a few months, we will be back as one of the rare BBS'

If it took working seven days a week, working my fingers to the bone, to pay for this stuff, I would work eight.
Tiki: Fri Jan 24, 03 at 12:22:42 AM (EST) - Yowzer
Hey there kyle !
Yes, I am addicted... The first time I held a piece framed by a pro, I am not talking Aarons here, I fell in love. If it took working seven days a week, working my fingers to the bone, I would work eight.
Ron is the MAN. He can ramble for hours on glue. Yes, depending on the stock, the proper glue is a major factor when deciding on the mounting. LOL - I know this now... And you have to get the best UV glass there is. Believe it or not, those floresents up above will fade them...
The good thing is, every July he has a 2 for 1... But the waiting is the hardest part... I already have 5 that are waiting to be framed... LOL, I moved my office into 2 suites, about 1100 SQF.. Lots of wall space... Yes I am addicted. Framing pieces will put you in the poor house.

Sandy: Thu Jan 23, 03 at 11:02:43 AM (EST) - species Packus Ratus
That's me. What do I collect? Oy.
Vintage ashtrays. Well, that's what it started out as... along the way I discovered various ceramicists and potteries that I liked and focused on them. Gouda Dutch potteries (there were several). Frankoma pottery. Sascha Brastoff ceramics. Really kitschy TreasureCraft stuff.
Then.... 50's/60's era design. Ceramics, textiles, mostly. I have a long-standing yen for a vintage garden gnome - hard to come by on the West Coast, though common in other parts of the country and really common in the U.K. CDs galore, mostly out of print. Back issues of the LA Times Magazine, because I'm SURE I'll need that article on landscaping or interior design some day. Books - certain authors, certain topics.
Judi: Thu Jan 23, 03 at 10:45:49 AM (EST) - collectible oddities
In case you didn't think I was strange enough, here are a few, off the top of my head collections I have here in this very house, if I dig deep enough into the attic I'm sure to find more:
20+ Dick, Jane and Sally book series; other rare or collectible children's books; Sci-Fi Books; first editions, signed books; space shuttle stuff, from books, to toys, models, posters, magazines; rocks from just about every place I ever visited including many countries around the world; coins from those same places; postcards from those places too; computers, and computer programs and games and books and magazines; recipes and cookbooks; sheet music from before I was born; sheet sets and blankets for any size bed from crib to King sized bed; 7 full sets of dishes for 12 handed down from realtives plus my 3 full sets (dinner party anyone?); cut glass plates, serving containers; vintage linens, lace, tablecloths, doilies etc; Tupperware; seaglass from beaches everywhere; way too many cones from pine, redwood, and other trees from around the globe from tiny to huge! And maybe oddest of all to me was the massive collection of video tapes, not purchased movies, but of random tv shows I taped and never got around to watching, perhaps 300 tapes or more with Letterman, news specials like the Gulf War, ice storms, natural disasters and a few family Christmas tapes.
So I outed my crazy collections, what do you collect?
Judi: Thu Jan 23, 03 at 07:57:27 AM (EST) - Tiki
My house is full to the rafters with "collections" (junk)(however are all the original Star Wars characters and weapons in mint condition considered junk?).. and yes I do have my share of Macintosh and really old APPLE stuff. I have kept every computer we ever had, all the swag we got at MacWorld but before that APPLEFEST that we attended yearly in Boston. I have the mugs, magazines since Issue 1, t-shirts, keychains, smack-a-mac and a few rare posters of my own plus this large canvas advertising banner hung outside a building. I never considered selling or purchasing more however. My income since 1974 has been about $0.00/year,so I don't have a large disposable income for buying anything on EBay. Plus I did get burned there as I stated when shortly after I made a profile there, someone else was buying and selling from my username! EBay still doesn't know how that happened or who it was but after a password change I never had the problem again but also never dared to buy or sell anything myself! But if it is your hobby, and you can afford it, and enjoy it, and it keeps you out of trouble, I say GO FOR IT! I'm one of the "crazy ones" that hasn't yet discovered my inner genius. There is still time.
Tiki: Thu Jan 23, 03 at 02:06:45 AM (EST) - Must add to the first archive...
Here's to the crazy ones
The misfits...The rebels....The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They're not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They invent...They imagine...They heal.
They explore...They create...They inspire.
They push the human race forward.
Maybe they have to be crazy.
How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
Or sit in silence and hear a song that's never been written?
Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
We make tools for these kinds of people.
While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.
Tiki: Thu Jan 23, 03 at 01:51:06 AM (EST) - Doing the math
I put in $200 (s&H to my terms added the extra) and I paid around $200 something for the frame work. Equals about $800.00 plus... Tee hee, just recieved my 2nd one.... Not that I would ever sell one...
Tiki: Thu Jan 23, 03 at 01:40:14 AM (EST) - Judy
Judy,
Just my 2 cents... but eBay changed my life.
Sounds krazy, but it did. I have a problem. I am a collector of vintage, as well as new, Apple Computer swag. On a good year I could drive up once to the valley and maybe find one piece for my collection. The time, gas for the car, etc... well you can see, this was not the way...
Than I started 'pro framing' the doohickies... spent 2000.00 last year on this new addiction... Yep, I am prolly krazy as heck... but UV glass, etc... You have to see them....

Tiki, keep the EST, I love it! A 12 hr clock would be nice, I was never into that millitary time thing. Abbreviations for months is fine. Wider columns might be nice.
As for the EBAY thing, I never could get the attraction to buying and selling stuff there. I give my extras to GoodWill and I purchase locally from used stores. Plus shortly after we got an EBay account someone else hacked into it and was using it to buy and sell stuff and an alert shopper notified us and we had a go-round with EBay on that. Still have an account there but personally we have never bought or sold a thing there. I do have local friends who are EBay addicts but it is not my thing...

Yeaaaaa-a-a-aaa, Tiki! I even thought once about asking if you still had a copy of the script, and if so, would you be inclined (willing, that is) to put it up on your server. I immediately dismissed the thought since I recall that being any sort of administrator for this unruly lot would be time-consuming at best, and adverse to one's mental health at worse.
Having done so, I wish you the best, at least, and I'm grateful for any color wall to write on, although the white bg is a bit of a glare. How about beige? Parchment? The white's going to show a lot of finger marks, you know.
Oh, yes, music! You probably know that the last independent FM radio station in Orange County (maybe all of southern California?) has been sold, and will soon simulcast "Super Estrella," the latest format en Espanol.
Did anyone else receive an email from djmimi (Mimi Chen) promoting "Super Estrlla?" When I replied I received an email from the program manager at FM 103.1, and he said it must have been a virus.
Apparently they still had email addies (including mine) from the former staff, so they decided to mail them all a promo. Like any friends of Mimi would listen to "Super Estrella."
I wonder what SRF thinks of these latest revoltin' developments. I wonder if SRF knows about these white walls? Heard from JackBeni the other day. He's in touch with SRF, so maybe I'll alert both of them.

But can a make a server understand that I want it on eBay time (PST), when it is on the east coast? And why in the heck is my server on the East Coast?

Diane, join in the fun, the family that computes together, stays together? The deep freeze continues in the east. Too cold to have fun outside so we make our fun inside. Now this was fun, a silly and musical diversion to entertain and make you wonder who has that much free time to make these web pages. My favorite was "Viking Kittens". Now what fun, silly or bizzarre things have you stumbled across lately?

Did not do quite so well on the "hoax vs. real" test. As a practiced Photoshop user I know how easy it is to fool the eye. In the test, I was relying most on my instinct as to what was plausible, or in which cases someone would want to mislead. Naturally, any photo with a politician (Bush, Daschle) is likely to be a hoax becomes someone's just trying to embarrass him. Of course embarrassing politicians is just another game of shooting fish in a barrel.
Tiki: Sat Jan 18 14:22:45 EST 2003 - Judy
You have to throw a few topics up above. Just in case a newby bounces in... Gives them a place to start.
Oh my, I just realized that this page has last years web site look... Must fix at once...
Judi: Sat Jan 18 13:48:20 EST 2003 - Good job Jones!

Tiki, honestly I can't see any change in font size, might be the preferences on my computer or my browser (Netscape) Don't worry about that. I can squint just fine. (Darn bifocals, can't wear them on the computer, too cheap to buy computer glasses) I see changes have been made to the topic list, no more graphics, only QUALITY music, that would exclude anything I listen to I bet. Everything Mac fits me just fine but probably not many of our resident posters. Tiki stuff? Not much of that in Maine! How about abandoning topics entirely? I'm too random a thinker to stick to a topic. But you can be assured I'll be polite and abide by anyones' rules.
Today's silly link from me: Can you tell your arse from your elbow? Take the quiz, it isn't that easy!

Jones: Sat Jan 18 00:15:45 EST 2003 - Sandy
Yes! During dinner I realized it, and here you beat me to the post. Andy Hardy. Of Course.
Sandy: Fri Jan 17 23:36:27 EST 2003 - Close....
you were thinking of Andy Hardy? Mickey Rooney, maybe Judy Garland.... "Hey, kids, let's put on a show!" Yeah?
Jones: Fri Jan 17 23:16:21 EST 2003 - Did I say Hardy Boys?
I must be tired. The name I'm trying to think of eludes me now. Older movies ... musicals ... kids... It'll come to me...
Sandy, that Richard Thompson cover sounds incredible. Must find that online. It'd make a great EP with Travis' "...Baby, One More Time."
Tiki: Fri Jan 17 22:45:10 EST 2003 - Your thoughts
OK, I have to go... I really must step away from my Powerbook before 8 pm when I am at home...
Is this font size OK? Or should I let your browsers decide?
Tiki: Fri Jan 17 22:37:08 EST 2003 - The Avengers...

Tiki: Fri Jan 17 22:34:32 EST 2003 - Ack
I am trying hard, but I do not think Ms Diane and I saw one show in 2002. Not one. We moved into the office in June, and the world started spinning ...
At least we got out of the house - Vegas 4 times, and Encintas (SP?) once... Outstanding little Tiki thingies 4 sale place there... Oh my, we must do better this year. :(
Sandy: Fri Jan 17 22:07:13 EST 2003 - How Could I Forget
We saw Richard Thompson at the Barclay Theater on the UCI campus. A very stuffy venue, and attended by his devoted fans (who could pony up the ticket price). The quirky highlight. Richard doing a driving, menacing acoustic version of "Oops, I Did It Again". I can only say....it worked.
Sandy: Fri Jan 17 22:04:38 EST 2003 - Music in 2002?
Hmmmm, we did not do much of the concert scene in 2002. HoS was very busy, I was unemployed and trying to be frugal - and we tied up most of our disposable income in home improvements. But.... We did get Norah Jones, some new Diana Krall, Solomon Burke, the new (posthumous) Harrison cd, Guy Clark's new one, and I'm currently enjoying the soundtrack to The Rookie. I'm always on the hunt for good used stuff and found some winners. Roy Rogers/Norton Buffalo, Laura Love, Dave Alvin.
We went with an out of town friend to see Jon Brion for the first time... he was an long-standing Largo zombie that was needing a fix after a couple years in Chicago. Fascinating. But he (Brion) wears too much make-up, just a personal turn-off.
Tiki: Fri Jan 17 21:30:15 EST 2003 - My first music post
Well, at the momment I can not put up a np: as I brought my entire stereo system to the office and I have not bought a replacement... The good news is that MBE reception has improved. I think Nick is doing a very good job, for what it is worth.
Tiki: Fri Jan 17 21:16:04 EST 2003 - Note to myself.

Tiki: Fri Jan 17 21:12:24 EST 2003 - Jones
Beats screwing the pooch though
Hmmm, my to do list is getting longer... I figured that problem out a while ago. But before I add the feature... OK, stop me if I start rambling...
An open tag will only go so far as a cell. that would be the >TD< tags... So as this script is generating the html below, using a >hr< as a seperator, all I need to do is make the script generate TD and TR tags making each post its own cell... No more home runs. But I am waiting to see what size a weeks worth of posts turns out to be.
At my office (Yes it is GOOD to be accross the street from City Hall - albeit SP's City Hall - hey the LA mayor hangs out there a lot) I have a fantastic connection to the WWW. Here at home, still the same ol' eStink dial up. So the last thing I want to do is add more bits to the board... as I am sure I am not the only one using a dial up.
So lets see. All I have to do rewrite 2 lines of code and presto... This board's script started out as about 2 pages (with the odds and ends). The script that I just wrote for the Spine site came to 15... So adding a few plug-ins will not be a problem. I just need to find some time...
Jones: Fri Jan 17 20:08:15 EST 2003 - Hmm. Weird paragraph spacing.
New HTML editor. Not used to the quirks. Beats screwing the pooch though.
Jones: Fri Jan 17 20:07:10 EST 2003 - 2002 Music
Since this would normally be the time of year for me to try
and shape 12 months of musical experiences into some kind of smartly-written
post, it's ironic that in this particular year, when Tiki has bestowed us with
a brand-new BBS for such purposes, I find myself terribly deficient in EM
(Everything Musical) for 2002.
Maybe three-quarters of the new records I wanted to buy this
past year, I never did get around to purchasing. Those that I bought I didn't
listen to nearly enough, instead directing my attention toward older favorites
(like Big Star & Uncle Tupelo) and newly acquired classics (very early
Kinks, and more Big Star). I did catch some exquisite live shows, including finally the
excellent Elvis Costello (twice!),
the White Stripes at the El Rey, and of course the third Coachella Festival,
which for my money was stolen by Belle & Sebastian in their dusk set.
I can say without hesitation that of the records I did buy,
my favorites of the year were Paul Westerberg's paired releases, Stereo
(under his own name) and Mono (as Grandpaboy). The “why”
of this choice is described much better than I could ever do by a couple of
writers at the Seattle Weekly who made the same choice (Click here).
I also thought very highly of the new albums by Beck and the Flaming Lips, as
they evidently thought of one another, since they're now touring together.
Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was also a fave, but that feels like
a 2001 release to me.
Curtis Hanson's Eminem movie 8-Mile was damn fine entertainment,
a Hardy Boys picture with a slum soul and that rarest of film commodities, a
real denouement, as were the assortment of singles he managed to
decorate the airwaves with. But the rock 'n' roll movie of the year (if'n y'ask
me, which I realize you didn't) was Michael Winterbottom's 24 Hour
Party People, a history of the Manchester music scene as seen through
the eyes of punk impresario Tony Wilson, and recast as a hilarious collage of concert footage,
legend, and outright fibbery. Steve Coogan's performance as Wilson is all by
itself a reason to see the picture, even if the music itself, threading all the
way from the art-punk of Joy Division through the proto-rave band Happy
Mondays, is not your cup of tea.
I promise (myself, if no one else) to do better in 2003.

our new benefactor
Judi, I know you mean well, but I would really prefer that such terms, including webmaster (in any form) not be directed to me. It really makes me uncomfortable. It implies a position that I have not signed up for.
"This BBS (Message Board) is intended to be self policing." And that is my intention. I did not just come up with the list of rules over night. This is a piece I have worked on for months. Everything in there is directed to me as well. In fact, in my mind, 2Xs directed to me...
The only webmaster you will find here, is when posts are "Archived" (yes, I think we should archive) , all behind the scene work... The fact is... The GP Webmaster spends his free time on eBay... ;)
Tiki: Fri Jan 17 14:45:16 EST 2003 - Judi
When I moved my computers to the office I had to zap every hard drive. The reasoning behind this - I had to make sure that I was 100% legit in the Software department... Meaning reinstalling to make sure every computer had registered programs, etc...
Ended up wiping out my address book... ooops. But I had a few on my home PowerBook, so invited everyone that I had an e-mail address for. Not very many... So if everyone would spread the word, we might see a few more faces... Someone know how to contact Thomas?

Twiddle Your Thumbs and Kick Up Your Feet
It's National Nothing Day!
This un-event was created by newspaperman Harold Pullman Coffin and was first observed in 1973. The goal of National Nothing Day is "to provide Americans with one national day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing, or honoring anything."
Art work from web site: Edward Hopper's People in the Sun appear to be doing nothing in particular, just sitting, reading, and sunning?the perfect way to celebrate National Nothing Day
Judi: Fri Jan 17 13:56:40 EST 2003 - come out, come out, wherever you are...
Ok lurkers, sign in please. Been one of those days around here. Too tired and too busy to post anything coherent. But I would like to know who else got the invite to join this little community so I could say hi to them too. So far I see KD being his same old naughty self, Jones polite as always, Dr and Mrs Singer dropping in to say hi, Sandy "Miss Congenality", and our new benefactor TIKI explaining some of the rules. So far, so good but where is everyone else?
Today's Scientific Lesson: A friend of mine told me about an Iridium Flare visible many nights. Apparently it's caused by the sun's reflection off the huge solar panels of a communications satellite. It will be brighter than any star, even brighter than Venus, about -4 magniture and visible for about 15 seconds. These flares occur in a small, localized area so you won't be able to see them when I can. However, you can go to www.heavens-above.com
If you register and enter your town or exact latitude and longitude, it will tell you when a flare will be visible to you. They occur several times a week.

especially considering the commercial nature of your site
Well, I am open to moving it to tikipenguin.com if that is what it takes (forgive me for lurking, I am watching a widget on eBay - and decied to bounce in for a look see) to make everyone happy. But having spent a bit of time on an eBay board, I do think a few rules are for the good of ANY board.
Jones: Thu Jan 16 22:53:12 EST 2003 - Tiki
I got your very nice e. Thanks.
It probably was good for everyone to get away from the Room for a while. It had gotten stuffy and claustrophobic and people were sometimes not acting like themselves.
I was reluctant to post here this morning, and as always I expect that my participation will ebb and flow. Still, it's always good to know that it's here.
I think your rules are good rules, especially considering the commercial nature of your site.
As I mentioned earlier, I'm happy to retire the yellow, although you know what? The white is not significantly easier on the eyes. You got any creamier colors in that palette of yours, Penguin?
Tiki: Thu Jan 16 20:04:01 EST 2003 - Hmmm
Oh well, looks like I have to add another bit of code to make the server understand that it is PST, so that is going to have to wait.. Good news is, I can take it off 24 hour..
Anywho, I hope you enjoy... C'ya later...
In other words.. I brought ALL of my computers to the office, leaving just a PowerBook at home (That I try not to touch, if at all posible). Best thing I ever did...
Sandy: Thu Jan 16 14:55:44 EST 2003 - But.... but.... but....
Where are the blinkies? You know, for the annoyance factor !!!! :)
Judi: Thu Jan 16 14:53:10 EST 2003 - EST!
What's to fix? I'm first up each morning and I'm on EST. You all can just subtract 3 can't ya?
Jones: Thu Jan 16 14:24:06 EST 2003 - Tagging?
Let's see... italics for emphasis, bold for clarity, and
links for shameless plugs.
Tiki: Thu Jan 16 14:23:34 EST 2003 - hmmmm
I also see we are on EST... Will fix that as well....
Tiki: Thu Jan 16 14:22:41 EST 2003 - Judi
Yes, html will work... and links are allowed...
At this moment I am in the middle of coding a BBS (A threaded Board w/ all of the bells and whistles) for the Spine site. Almost there .. As soon as I can, I will pump up the font size, and punch in the "No Java" Subroutine...
Judi: Thu Jan 16 14:10:30 EST 2003 - colors - and EM (Everything Macintosh or Everything Maine?
Blue on white, crisp and clean and readable. Font a bit small for my old eyes but I can handle it. This is not the "Yellowroom". Brand new year, brand new colors. and there is a musical reference
"In The White Room (With Black Curtains)" -Cream
Don't know enough about graphic design to discuss that so I'll skip that one and move on to (EM) Everything Macintosh- I'm still using OS9.2. I have the educator free copy of Jaguar, I want to use it but until hubby gets his own computer I need to leave this one "as is". In my vast computer museum at home I don't have any old computers capable of moving on to OSX. Do we have any 'switchers" in this group yet? From PC to Mac?
The state of Maine loves Macintosh. Every 7th and 8th grade student and teacher has their own laptop, an iBook. They also have free home internet access. Program is so far a big success. Read about it at: www.wired.com/news/school/0,1383,49046,00.html
Tiki, are we allowed links? I made this one a cut and paste just in case.
Jones: Thu Jan 16 12:30:19 EST 2003 - And furthermore...
... I don't need yellow if nobody else does. New times, new color schemes. It always hurt my eyes anyway.
Jones: Thu Jan 16 12:25:52 EST 2003 - And...
... I promise to try to never say who I voted for. It's a little like asking a dog not to bark at a mailman, but in the interest of civility (which even I can sometimes lose my grip on) I can try.
