Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 7, 04 at 11:55:34 PM (EST) - 'phones...
I would love to get some 'phones like the etymotic ones...but with my lack of finger skills it's difficult to get the earbuds in. If they made some with a head band, i'd be in business. I LOVE my Bose Triports. I hear the VERY best earbuds are the ones that they sculpt based on a mold from your ear, like pro musicians use on stage.
By the way, as a car-ipod solution, you should check out the Ice:link. It hooks up your ipod DIRECTLY to the CD Changer input of your car stereo head unit, giving you PURE ipod sound coming through your speakers, as opposed to being filtered through the cassette adapters or FM transmitters they have on the market. Plus, you can control the iPod via the CD Changer controls on the head unit. SWEET!
Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 7, 04 at 11:44:45 PM (EST) - iPod mini..dissapointing...til you run the numbers...
Yeah...the minipod was dissapointing initially...until you run the numbers. Rio Cali 256 MB = 64 songs (at 4MB a pop) (or fill in the blank with whatever low capacity, high cost Mp3 player...some 128, some 64, just divide by 4 for the number of songs). miniPod: 4 GB = 4096 MB = 1000 songs (at 4 MB a pop). Rio Cali price: $199 retail. minipod price: $249 retail. Rio Cali price per song: $3.10. minipod price per song: .25. Ability to not have to erase songs and reload everytime you want to change CDs, ability to use fast firewire (or USB 2.0) rather than tortoise slow USB 1.1, ability to carry a large part of your music collection at one time: priceless. So....when you look at it in that perspective, the minipod is a DEAL!
Dr. Larry: Wed Jan 7, 04 at 11:02:38 PM (EST) - new ipod fad
Poogie...and others: Funny you mention that (aout the airport incident). There's a new fad going around with ipod owners. It's called "iPod Jacking". iPodders nonchalantly approach other iPodders, unplug the headphones and switch them. No communication...just piping in to hear what the other is listening to.Read about it here.
akageorge: Wed Jan 7, 04 at 03:34:56 PM (EST) - tea
Maybe you'll be able to buy us all iPods!
akageorge: Wed Jan 7, 04 at 03:32:51 PM (EST) - tea
Be sure to let us know about those lottery tickets
Mrs Dr. (aka tea): Wed Jan 7, 04 at 02:24:25 PM (EST) - iPod Moment
Hey, Apple! You listening??? There's a free commercial right there for ya!
Judi: Wed Jan 7, 04 at 09:14:10 AM (EST) - cell phone
I give up on cell phone usage in the northeast. I bought a cell phone so we can go places in Maine and have a way for the old folks to contact us. About as soon as I leave the driveway it goes to roaming and about 30 min from home I get "no service". The whole reason for the stupid phone was so we could go away to those remote places.
akageorge: Wed Jan 7, 04 at 02:17:01 AM (EST) - iPodNot
but I am in the market for a new cell phone soon. I want one with a camera. Internet ready. Etc. Can the iPod do that yet? It would make a MacBeliever out of me.
I'll settle for a phone with service that works more than 10 miles from the main highway.
akageorge: Wed Jan 7, 04 at 02:14:27 AM (EST) - Larry
omigod ... Larry, you crack me up! ("Larry and his famous friends") I'm in a. stitches b. awe!
I don't know if my (nonfamous ... yet) friends can score extra passes. I'll try to see them this week. Dennis Monahan, the owner of Adirondack Guitar, is my East Coast RTE. (He and his partner, Mary, refer to Scott as Malibu Dennis.) I'd love to get them to meet -- or even have an impartial observer meet Dennis!
Tiki: Tue Jan 6, 04 at 11:22:57 PM (EST) - I will Be Podding, as well
Just have to wait... Oh well
Tiki: Tue Jan 6, 04 at 11:16:10 PM (EST) - Poogie
My thoughts as well... Now if it came in purple. ;)
ACK... The New Apple MacWorld iPod poster rocks...
LOL.. I should be there, I would have 20 of them by now.. But I have one now!
Poogie: Tue Jan 6, 04 at 10:02:45 PM (EST) - Tiki
iPod mini is kinda disappointing, don't you think? 4 gigs, and it's only $50 less than the 15 gig. Math does not compute.
Tiki: Tue Jan 6, 04 at 09:41:46 PM (EST) - The iPod mini
Hmmm... I was wondering what Jobs was going to show off at MacWorld.

Peggy: Tue Jan 6, 04 at 03:37:24 PM (EST) - I'm late!
I'm late in wishing you all a happy 2004 and I'm also late in discovering 103.1! As I cruised my sleek, silvery rental Sable (thanks to the kind gentleman that ran a red light and hit my BRAND NEW automobile on 1/3/04) to work this AM over Sepul-ve-dah I happened upon Free Nelson Mandela and stopped. I was a happy girl and am curious to see where this goes...
Poogie: Tue Jan 6, 04 at 01:12:33 AM (EST) - i Be Podding, too
Love my iPod. I have the 30 gig and it has around 2600 songs on it so far. Just took it on a cross country trip and it saved my sanity. To really get the most out of it, try some Etymotic earphones. They sound phenomenal, and block out all of the outside noise. You will get lost in the music.
At LAX, I was listening to my iPod while waiting for the plane. An extremely gorgeous guy takes the seat right across from me. He locks his eyes on mine. But I knew what the gaze was about. I knew it wasn't about me. My white earbuds gave me away. With a sly smile, he slowly pulled out his iPod, and inserted the earbuds. It was an iPod moment.
Judi: Mon Jan 5, 04 at 12:08:01 PM (EST) - iPod
I don't have one of course, don't really have a need for portable music I guess. Oldest son has one but he got the snap on tape recorder feature, just this small microphone thing that plugs in to the top of his iPod and over Christmas he recorded question and answer sessions with grandparents and his talk with me that alone lasted 2 hrs. Then he can save all that conversation to a cd or however he chooses. He also plans to use it in grad school to record all his classes. It really worked slick as a whistle, and I think he said it was perhaps $99. Those little gadgets are truly amazing.
Dr. Larry: Mon Jan 5, 04 at 03:25:49 AM (EST) - i Be Podding
Alright...anyone who is a music fan who does not have one of these doesn't know what they're missing! I was like that for the last year and a half (2 years??) I just got my 40 gigger...and this thing is a work of beauty! Imagine carrying your whole music collection around in your pocket, with room for your now empty wallet (alright...you don't have that many CDs??? Then imagine carrying my or Tiki's collection around). It seems limitless! Before, I thought i had choice with the 6 CD changer I have. Now..the choice is infinitesmal! I could have a different CD at each traffic light! And it takes longer to unwrap a cassette tape than it does to transfer a CD onto an ipod. Fuck the radio. Fuck MTV....I want my iPod!!
Larry Singer: Mon Jan 5, 04 at 03:07:11 AM (EST) - Being Naked
Tiki- If you've got the boots, you've got it all. I mean, other than cleaner sound and pacaging, there's really nothing too "gotta have" about it. Terry's brother Tommy made us the CD of the boots, so i'd heard it already. The bonus disc is about as useful as ANOTHER "1000 FREE hours" disc from AOL. Save yer pennies and buy this. I gave you that link cause it's inexpensive there, but they don't give a lot of info. [We bought it for $18 from Overstock..but they're out of it]. Read about it here. It's a cool book with neat pull out things like handwritten letters and posters. Really cool!
Dr. Larry: Mon Jan 5, 04 at 02:56:33 AM (EST) - NAMM
Thanks for the tip. I'll probably go. Last year, I just rolled right in like I owned the place. actually, I passed all the entrances (where they were doing all but full body cavity searches on everyone) looking for the weakness....and I found it. Some Exit boy was flirting with some woman at one of the non profit booths, so when some people were leaving, I took the opportunity and like a Zeppelin, went in through the out door. It was a blast. I even got my picture taken with Jerry Only from the Misfits, which can be seen (shameless plug forthcoming) on here somewhere. Hey MARY...do you think your friends might have an extra pass so I can go in legit??
Dr. Larry: Mon Jan 5, 04 at 02:46:46 AM (EST) - It was 7 years ago today...
That tea and I met at Perq's at the WalterTrout/KSCA Farewell/Yellow gathering. And the rest, they say, is history...
I bought tea 7 lottery tickets cause it's 7 years we've been together, and the jackpot this time around is 7 mil....and wouldn't you know it - the drawing is this Wednesday....the 7th! Numerology anyone??
: Mon Jan 5, 04 at 02:39:28 AM (EST) -
oh, crap, it's been too long ... my friends are from HERE
akageorge: Mon Jan 5, 04 at 02:32:02 AM (EST) - NAMM
Is anybody going to the NAMM show? A couple of my friends from here are going, and I'd like to introduce you. They're weird. You'd like them.
Tiki: Sat Jan 3, 04 at 10:14:02 PM (EST) - More Birthday goodies.
My mom sent me the HBO DVD "From the Earth to the Moon" series... Yowzer...
Tiki: Sat Jan 3, 04 at 10:11:57 PM (EST) - Happy 2004!
I have been eyeballing the "Let It Be Naked" but I think I have most of it via underground tapes, I received a tower gift card for my Birthday. Is this a must have Sandy?
Anyone pick up the new 30 year "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" CD? Hmmm, that looks like a gem as well.
Hi akageorge!
akageorge: Sat Jan 3, 04 at 02:53:51 PM (EST) - WEBK mystery solved (like you cared)
"Catamount Radio Triple A outlet WEBK Killington, VT, is in the process of changing into The Peak, World Class Rock, with a heavy emphasis on listener input via its new Peak Music Panel, modeled after sister station WRNX Springfield, MA's Listener Advisory Board."
This is from a nifty website, http://triplearadio.com/news/. Everything you wanted to know about what's happening in AAA radio. The guy seems pretty well connected.
akageorge: Sat Jan 3, 04 at 02:37:07 PM (EST) - WEBK
I misposted. WEBK is not another The Point; it's another The Peak. Still not sure about ownership, but the 'talent' section of their website is now blank, as is the 'about us' page. Hmm.
akageorge: Sat Jan 3, 04 at 02:32:11 PM (EST) - Oh yeah
E-mail me if you're interested in the certificate or have questions about the surgery/doctor.
akageorge: Sat Jan 3, 04 at 02:30:38 PM (EST) - Speaking of resolutions ...
Is anybody resolving to have LASIK eye surgery?
I have a $1,000 certificate off the cost of all-laser LASIK that expires 2/27. It's for the Saddleback Eye Center in Laguna Hills, where I had my surgery. (www.saddlebackeye.com) Anyone want it?
Sandy: Sat Jan 3, 04 at 11:46:44 AM (EST) - 'O4 Greetings
Happy New Year '04 to you all.
THOMAS, what a fun new toy!!
The CAT got a new food dish (loves it) and a new hairbrush (hates it).
HoS got Let It Be Naked, a rolling laptop case, a sweater that fit, and a shirt that didn't.
I got a book I'd been hoping for (House of Leaves), the PBS Blues documentary on dvd, and a set of Calphalon cookware.
Most of all, we got to spend time with our boys and they didn't even fight!
The xmas tree awaits dismantling, I try to put that off.... but it must be done.
Resolutions begin anew - good luck with all yours.
Thomas More: Thu Jan 1, 04 at 09:59:35 PM (EST) - Ho Ho Ho, it's already '04
Wishing you a Happy New Year!
I didn't get any recorded music for Christmas, but Santa did bring me a DVD recorder. Now I can copy all of my old videos to DVDs. I hope I do better than I have copying all my old LPs to CDs (I got the CD recorder about this time last year).

Under the tree were No Doubt and Seal CDs. Of course I went out and bought The Weakerthans "Reconstruction Site" and Catch-22 "Dinosaur Sounds". Maybe I'll ever get a chance to listen to them someday!
SRF: Wed Dec 31, 03 at 04:43:40 PM (EST) - oh one more thing
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
SRF: Wed Dec 31, 03 at 02:55:35 PM (EST) - Indie 103.1
I think they've got the right idea and are serving a niche listening audience. Reminds me of KROQ in the mid to late 80s with some 90s stuff and a few currents thrown in as well. The signal, though, is a problem. Can get them OK in Mission Viejo. Here's a recent sample playlist from two different hours on "Indie 103.1"

Tiki: Tue Dec 30, 03 at 06:09:49 PM (EST) - 103.1
Hmmm, I had to mess with my TERK FM Antenna a bit...
It sucks being next to the port/city hall - FM goes screwy - but yea, sort of sounds like a looser KROQ.
Is that Bob Mould they are playing now???? ;)
kyle: Mon Dec 29, 03 at 09:06:48 PM (EST) -
happy holidays to all!! anybody in L.A. proper had the chance to listen to 103.1?? there was a blip in the times about the station playing modern dance music stuff, but now they are billing themselves as indie 103.1. their playlist sounds like an early kroq with a spattering of some 90's style rock ala nirvana, etc.. iwas quite pleased to hear X's los angeles last night. wasn't 103.1 a few years back mars radio??
akageorge: Fri Dec 26, 03 at 03:18:56 PM (EST) - Judi
I haven't seen it, but Ebert put "Winged Migration" in his tops of the year list. I read a lot about it when it was being made. Maybe my mom would like it, too, being a veteran birdwatcher. I'll see about renting it.
akageorge: Fri Dec 26, 03 at 03:17:07 PM (EST) - Merry everything!
Our 2' of snow has melted -- or been sogged -- down to about 4" by Christmas Eve rain. There are even green patches on the low spots in the yard. But it was a white Christmas, and appropriately cold ... 40 degrees feels warm! Hope everyone is well, no damage from the earthquake or mudslides this week, and enjoying the holidays.
I got Johnny Cash American III (the album where he does "One") and the new Vance Gilbert/Ellis Paul collaboration. Now I just need a CD player in my Eagle to enjoy them!
Bad news on the radio front: WEBK.com has sold out. It's now The Point (what an original name!). Blech. I stop in now and then and still hear some good stuff, but it's not the same.
Good news on the radio front: There's a new jazz station in Albany called LoveFM. Pretty good variety, made for car or work listening, no screaming DJs. Mostly JazzLite, but it is good driving-at-2-a.m. music.
Tiki: Wed Dec 24, 03 at 07:06:24 PM (EST) - Ho Ho Ho
Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and/or Chanukkah!
Mrs. Dr (aka tea): Wed Dec 24, 03 at 02:10:48 AM (EST) - Holiday Greetings
Just a quick pop in to wish you all a wonderful holiday. Here's hoping you get all the toys you asked for, and a few you didn't even know you wanted. Stay safe, and healthy. Here's to a peacefilled new year.
Judi: Tue Dec 23, 03 at 11:33:10 AM (EST) - movie suggestion
In laws now both have the flu and husband and I really wanted to go see a movie but we don't dare go to a crowded area like a theater and chance getting sick. So we rented a movie. WOW! If you haven't seen "Winged Migration" yet you need to rent it. It is a documentary on bird migration, no real story, very little dialogue, just amazing images and lovely music. I liked it so much I plan to purchase the video or DVD and before I had to return it this afternoon I decided to take it over to show my folks. So today I just got back from entertaining 10 or so elderly folks at my folks assisted living place. I set the video up in their activity room and invited anyone sitting around to join us. Many of the folks there enjoy bird watching as many feeders are set up outside their windows. It was a perfect movie for folks like my dad who are really hard of hearing because you didn't need to hear to enjoy the movie. They loved it and I got a "sitting ovation" when it was over. It is appropriate for all age levels, only a few sad parts that were handled in a tasteful manner.
...and Tiki, it has lots of Penguins, the big King Penguin to the rockhoppers. I loved the soundtrack too. Anyone else seen it yet?

A sort of plug: (in other words I ment to plug this gig) Ms. Diane and I went to "Rock for Toys" fund-raiser @ Sacred Grounds in San Pedro. More or less to say hey to folks I have known most of my life that I am lucky see once a year - work, work, and more work. And I did not expect anything to jump out at me...
And than this band Sherpas hits that little stage - YOWZER! I know we do not get out much, but this band was on fire!
